Emirates NBD teams up with BlackRock to expand private market access
The two firms signed a memorandum of understanding to create this platform, as well as introduce an initial range of evergreen offerings focused on income and growth strategies, tailored exclusively for the UAE wealth market, according to a press statement.
Clients of Emirates NBD Asset Management will gain access to BlackRock's Alternative Investments platform, which currently oversees more than $450 billion in assets under management.
The appetite for private market investments has been rising globally, driven by investors seeking portfolio diversification and stronger returns. This trend is further fueled by a slowdown in global capital market activity amid higher borrowing costs, with the alternative asset market projected to reach $30 trillion by the end of the decade.
Marwan Hadi, group head of retail and wealth management at Emirates NBD, said: 'Innovation is a cornerstone at Emirates NBD, and we are pleased to partner with BlackRock to offer access to best-in-class, products in alternative markets through a dedicated platform while supporting the growing needs of investors in the region.'
He added: 'We are deeply committed to creating value through our offerings and advancing the investment landscape in the UAE and the wider region, which has been experiencing a strong appetite in the last few years.'
This partnership also aims to democratize investment opportunities previously limited to institutional investors and ultra-high-net-worth individuals.
Beyond investment opportunities, BlackRock will leverage its open architecture approach to support Emirates NBD Asset Management's private markets expansion, offering services including marketing, education, training, and technology.
'We are delighted to partner with Emirates NBD as they build out their private markets platform. Spurred by investor sentiment and facilitated by product innovation, technology, and regulatory advancements, wealth allocations to private markets are predicted to increase materially over the next five years,' said Rachel Lord, head of International at BlackRock.
Emirates NBD serves more than 9 million customers across 13 countries, holding 997 billion dirhams ($271 billion) in assets as of Dec. 31, 2024.

US, Saudi Arabia hold high-level defense meeting at the Pentagon
US and Saudi officials convened at the Pentagon last week for a high-level forum to strengthen defense ties between Washington and Riyadh. The two-day meeting marked the 9th session of the Strategic Joint Planning Committee (SJPC), led by Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby on the US side and Assistant Minister of Defense Dr. Khalid Biyari representing the Saudi delegation. For all the latest headlines follow our Google News channel online or via the app. 'The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a critical, longstanding defense partner for the United States that seeks to grow more capable and self-reliant in its defense. We are working hard to partner with Saudi Arabia to enable it to do so,' Colby said in a post on X. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said both sides exchanged views on key defense priorities and regional security challenges. He noted that the delegations reaffirmed their support for the enduring bilateral relationship. Colby welcomed Saudi efforts to build up its self-defense capabilities and 'to make greater contributions toward achieving shared regional objectives,' Parnell added. The meeting came amid a series of recent US arms sales to the Kingdom. Earlier this year, the Trump administration approved a $3.5 billion weapons deal that included 1,000 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and 50 AIM-120C-8 guidance sections. Washington also cleared the sale of precision-guided munitions to Saudi Arabia in March. Separately, the top US military general for the Middle East announced last month that Saudi Arabia's first Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery had become fully operational. The current defense relationship builds on a broader framework established during President Donald Trump's first official foreign visit to Saudi Arabia in May. That trip resulted in the signing of $142 billion in Memoranda of Intent, which included major Saudi investments in the US defense industrial base. During last week's SJPC, Colby reaffirmed the Pentagon's commitment to deepening the defense partnership and 'encouraged rapid progress' on implementing the agreements signed in May. 'Both leaders recognized US-Saudi defense cooperation as a force multiplier for regional security, and reviewed opportunities to deepen cooperation,' said Parnell, the Pentagon spokesman.

Pakistan's Dar discusses bilateral matters, regional issues with Rubio amid improving ties
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar spoke to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday to discuss bilateral matters and regional issues, the foreign ministry said amid improving ties between Islamabad and Washington. Pakistan and the US have moved closer since American President Donald Trump brokered a ceasefire between Islamabad and New Delhi after a four-day military conflict in May that left over 70 dead on both sides of the border. In June, Trump hosted Pakistan's army chief for an unprecedented lunch at the White House where both sides discussed the then Iran-Israel conflict and other matters. Pakistan announced last week it had finalized a 'landmark' trade deal with the US, saying it would pave the way for reduced tariffs and deeper economic ties while Trump separately announced a partnership to develop Pakistan's oil reserves. 'The two leaders discussed a range of bilateral matters and exchanged views on current regional & international issues,' the Pakistani foreign ministry said about the Dar-Rubio call. 'Both sides agreed to remain in contact and continue cooperation on areas of mutual interest.' Islamabad's increasing engagement with Washington is being seen by analysts as a sign of a diplomatic reset after years of estrangement between the two countries. High-level bilateral exchanges between Pakistan and the US gradually faded as American forces withdrew from Afghanistan. Pakistan considers the US an important trade partner and its top export destination. Pakistan's exports to the US totaled $5.44 billion in fiscal year 2023-2024, according to official data. From July 2024 to February 2025, exports rose 10 percent from a year earlier. Pakistan's government has pushed for trade and economic ties with regional countries and international allies, such as the US, in recent months. The main motivation behind Islamabad's decision to pursue foreign investment and economic ties is a prolonged macroeconomic crisis that has drained Pakistan's resources. While the South Asian country has made certain economic gains over the past two years, which includes a reduced inflation rate, Pakistan hopes to achieve a sustained economic growth driven by exports and long-term financial reforms.

F1 tycoon pleads guilty in rare Singapore corruption case
SINGAPORE — A Singapore-based billionaire hotelier has pleaded guilty to a charge connected to a rare corruption scandal that shocked the country last year. Ong Beng Seng has admitted to abetting the obstruction of justice by helping ex-transportation minister Subramaniam Iswaran cover up evidence while he was being investigated for corruption. Ong had been accused of giving expensive gifts, including tickets to the Formula 1 Grand Prix and a ride on a private jet, to Iswaran while they were engaged in official business. Ministers in Singapore cannot keep gifts unless they pay the market value of the gift to the government, and they must declare anything they receive from people they have business dealings with. At Iswaran's sentencing last October, the court heard that Iswaran requested Ong bill him for a business class flight to Doha, after he discovered that he was being investigated. The judge said that he acted with deliberation and premeditation to avoid the probe. On Monday, Ong pleaded guilty on Monday for helping Iswaran pay the Singapore Grand Prix for the flight ticket from Doha to Singapore. The judge said that Ong's sentencing would be held on 15 August. Ong faces up to two years in jail for abetting a public servant in obtaining gifts, while the maximum jail term he faces for the abetment of obstruction of justice is seven years. The 79-year-old is also accused of abetting Iswaran in obtaining an all-expenses paid trip to Doha, said to be worth around S$20,850 ($16,188; £12,194). The two men were arrested in July 2023 and charge sheets revealed that Iswaran was gifted more than S$403,000 ($311,882; £234,586) worth of flights, hotel stays, musicals and grand prix tickets. At the time of the offences Iswaran was in the government's F1 steering committee and the chief negotiator on F1-related business matters. Ong helped bring the F1 Grand Prix to Singapore and his company Hotel Properties Limited (HPL) has brands like the Four Seasons and Marriott operating under it. Singapore's lawmakers are among the highest-paid in the world, with leaders justifying the handsome salaries by saying it combats corruption. Born in Malaysia in 1946, Ong moved to Singapore as a child and founded a hotel and property company in the 1980s. Ong has a rare bone marrow cancer, and the court previously allowed him to travel abroad for medical and work purposes. Hotel Properties Limited had earlier in April said that Ong would step down as its managing director "manage his medical conditions". — BBC
