HMC highlights tobacco control expertise in Dubai

On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, Dr Ahmad Mohammad Al Mulla, senior consultant in Public Health and Disease Control and director of the Tobacco Control Center at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)—a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Tobacco Dependence Treatment—participated in a workshop organised by Emirates Health Services. The event was held at the Primary Healthcare Department in Dubai on May 26. At the event, HMC showcased the expertise of the Tobacco Control Center and emphasised that Qatar is among one of the first in the region to introduce tobacco cessation services.
Dr Al Mulla presented an overview of the efforts undertaken by HMC and the Tobacco Control Center, highlighting key achievements in combating tobacco use in Qatar. He also provided a summary of the tobacco control laws issued by the State and their implementation, while sharing statistics on the prevalence of tobacco use in Qatar and across countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Dr Al Mulla further outlined the economic burden of the tobacco epidemic on Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and emphasised the pivotal role of the Tobacco Control Center in reducing tobacco use through ongoing educational and awareness activities within the community.
Dr Al Mulla outlined the free treatment services provided by HMC's Tobacco Control Center's cessation clinics, including the use of medications, nicotine replacement therapies, and laser treatment. He discussed psychological counselling and behavioural modification methods offered to tobacco users, in addition to the types of medical devices used to measure carbon monoxide levels and assess lung function.
Dr Al Mulla praised the role of HMC in supporting the Tobacco Control Center by providing free treatments to patients, emphasizing the critical importance of preventive services in reducing the spread of tobacco-related diseases.
He also thanked the organisers of the workshop for the opportunity to present the effective role played by HMC in tobacco control and the importance of continued collaboration between HMC, represented by the Tobacco Control Center and Emirates Health Services.

Dr Hanadi Al Hamad, Deputy Chief of Rehabilitation, Geriatrics, Long Term and Home Care Services, and Lead of Rehabilitation Therapy Services at HMC emphasised the national importance of the initiative, stating: 'This launch marks a turning point for cancer care in Qatar. We are shifting the paradigm—moving beyond survival to ensuring that patients live with dignity, function, and independence. In line with the National Health Strategy 2024 - 2030, rehabilitation is now recognized as an essential part of the patient journey.' Dr Mohamed Salem Al Hassan, CEO and medical director of NCCCR, added: 'We are entering a new era of cancer services in Qatar—one that sees survivorship as a critical phase requiring multidisciplinary support. This framework establishes a structured, accessible, and compassionate model of care that supports every patient, each step of the way.' The National Oncology Rehabilitation Framework represents a step forward in advancing HMC's strategic vision for integrated, high-quality care. It is fully aligned with the priorities National Health Strategy 2024 –2030 and contributes directly to the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030 by enhancing population health, building system sustainability, and empowering local capabilities. Globally, it reflects the principles of the WHO Rehabilitation 2030 Call for Action, promoting equitable, person-centered, and function-focused rehabilitation services as a core part of universal health coverage. With this launch, Qatar affirms its commitment to ensuring that people affected by cancer are supported not only to survive—but to live fully, regain independence, and enjoy a meaningful quality of life beyond their diagnosis. The division specialises in diagnosing and treating conditions, lik asthma, allergic rhinitis, chronic urticaria, atopic dermatitis, food allergies, drug allergies, insect venom allergy, anaphylaxis, and eosinophilic esophagitis. It serves adults and children by combining expert clinical knowledge with advanced diagnostic technologies to improve patients' quality of life. 'This World Allergy Week, we want to emphasise that allergies are serious medical conditions that can impact the quality of life, but with proper diagnosis and treatment, they are highly manageable,' said Dr. Asaad Imameldin, specialist Allergy/Immunology and Internal Medicine. 'Accurate diagnosis is key to effective allergy management, and our approach combines advanced diagnostic testing with personalised treatment plans, ensuring that every patient receives care tailored to their specific allergies,' he added. The division offers a range of cutting-edge diagnostic methods, including skin prick testing, intradermal testing, patch testing, serum-specific IgE blood tests, oral food challenges, drug provocation testing, and spirometry for lung function assessment. Treatment plans are personalised to each patient's specific allergies and lifestyle, with options ranging from medication management and allergen avoidance counselling to immunotherapy and biologic therapies for severe conditions. Emergency action plans are developed for patients at risk of severe reactions, including the use of epinephrine auto-injectors and usage training. Patient education remains a cornerstone of the division's approach, with emphasis on teaching patients and families about allergy prevention and management through awareness programs, informational materials and personalized counselling. HMC launches Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Programme

The programme will commence in the upcoming academic year and is developed in alignment with international standards. This programme positions QRI as a regional leader in training future physiatrists with unparalleled access to cutting-edge technologies, interdisciplinary care, and structured academic mentorship. Dr Hanadi Al Hamad, deputy chief of Rehabilitation, Long-Term Care, and Geriatrics, and CEO and medical director of Qatar Rehabilitation Institute, expressed her pride: 'This is a prestigious achievement for QRI and for Qatar.
