Wales landed in Japan this week determined to end their 17-game losing streak. Matt Sherratt's side take on Japan in the first Test in Kitakyushu next Saturday.
There is just one place separating Wales in 12th and Japan in 13th in the World Rugby rankings.
Wales are favourites to overcome Japan but it won't be easy, especially with former Australia and England coach Eddie Jones in charge of the Brave Blossoms.
Here is the matchday 23 Sherratt is likely to select for the first Test.
15. Blair Murray
Despite a desperately poor season results-wise, Murray has been one of the only players who has risen above the mediocrity to impress.
The 23-year-old isn't the biggest of men but he is a deadly broken-field runner with electric footwork and is an excellent finisher who makes good decisions under pressure.
Article continues below
Murray also enjoyed a fine debut campaign for the Scarlets and was named in the United Rugby Championship team of the season, albeit on the wing.
Should thrive in Japan where Wales are planning to play an expansive game. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby.
14. Tom Rogers
The 26-year-old has been one of Wales' better players this season and was excellent for the Scarlets as they reached the URC play-offs.
Rogers is very good under the highball and like Murray is a dangerous broken-field runner with pace to burn.
The Scarlets man is also an excellent finisher and should thrive in Japan and Wales will undoubtedly want to get his hands on the ball as much as possible.
13. Joe Roberts
Roberts has had a difficult time with injuries over the past couple of seasons and it has taken a bit of time for the 25-year-old to get back to his best.
But he hit top form for the Scarlets during the latter stages of the campaign as they reached the URC play-offs before putting up a good fight in a defeat to Leinster in the quarter-finals.
Roberts is an explosive runner who tends to ghost his way past defenders and is very physical in the contact area.
There's still a few rough edges with his decision making with ball in hand needing to improve but if he can stay fit he can be an asset to Wales moving forward.
12. Ben Thomas
There's a strong argument for Johnny Williams to start at 12 given his excellent form for the Scarlets towards the tail end of the season and his partnership with Roberts.
But Sherratt is a big fan of Ben Thomas who perhaps suits the attacking brand of rugby the Cardiff coach wants to employ.
Thomas is a lovely footballer with a crisp passing game and tons of peripheral vision, while his kicking isn't bad either.
The Cardiff playmaker will be central to Wales' attack firing.
11. Josh Adams
The 30-year-old has been plagued by injuries over the past couple of seasons and has struggled to reach the heights which won him a place in the British & Irish Lions squad to tour South Africa in 2021.
But Adams remains one of best wings in Welsh rugby and his experience will be invaluable if Wales are to turn around a record run of 17-straight Test match defeats.
Adams may have lost a bit of pace but he is still a potent finisher who is strong defensively and under the high ball.
10. Sam Costelow
This is a close-run thing between Costelow and Ospreys playmaker Dan Edwards but the Scarlets man might just edge it.
It is even possible they will start a Test each in Japan.
Costelow was a key figure in the Scarlets' late-season resurgence, with his ability to take the ball to the line, his running threat and his kicking game standing out.
With 20 international caps to his name Costelow really needs to kick on and make the number 10 shirt his own.
9. Kieran Hardy
The 29-year-old has been in outstanding form for the Ospreys and thoroughly deserves an international recall after getting left out of the Six Nations squad.
Hardy has always been strong at the fundamentals with his box kicking and slick service standing out but he is also a threat with ball in hand. Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free
The Ospreys number nine will be a key figure in Japan this summer with his partnership with either Costelow or Edwards crucial to the outcome.
8. Taulupe Faletau
The 34-year-old must surely be high up on the Lions' standby list so will want to be at his very best for Wales in Japan this summer.
He might be at the tail-end of his career but Faletau remains a quality operator and Wales are a far poorer team without the Cardiff No 8.
As always Faletau will be required to get Wales over the gainline and lead from the front in Japan.
7. Tommy Reffell
With Jac Morgan away with the Lions, Reffell will surely wear the number seven shirt in the first Test.
The 26-year-old has been in excellent form for Leicester and played a crucial role in the east Midlands club reaching the Gallagher Premiership final where they were beaten by Bath at Twickenham.
Japan will want to play fast and furious, meaning Reffell will be one of Wales' most important players given it is mainly down to him to slow down the speed of ruck ball.
6. Aaron Wainwright
The 27-year-old has been one of Wales' better players during this wretched run of results and will be a key figure in Japan.
Wainwright has a nice blend of athleticism and physicality and the Dragons man will be tasked with getting Wales over the gain line.
Wales will also likely use Wainwright in the wide channels with his explosiveness and offloading games a potential asset to Sherratt's side.
5. Teddy Williams
The 24-year-old has been in fine form for Cardiff this season and is the type of player who would thrive in the frantic pace and the searing heat of Japan.
Williams is an athletic second-row who is a top-class lineout operator, while he is also very effective in driving lineouts.
The Cardiff lock has had to bide his time in the international arena but with Will Rowlands, Dafydd Jenkins and Adam Beard missing, this could well be his chance.
4. James Ratti
The 27-year-old is the unsung hero of the Ospreys pack and is the type of player who gets through a mountain of unseen dirty work which allows others to shine.
Ratti is a powerful carrier who adds a lot of weight in the scrum and should complement the more athletic Williams well.
The Ospreys man won his only Wales cap against South Africa at Twickenham last summer and will view this tour as a chance to progress his international career.
3. Archie Griffin
The 23-year-old was a revelation on Wales' tour of Australia last summer, putting in a remarkable 26 tackles in 74 minutes in a narrow defeat to the Wallabies.
Griffin is a very dynamic carrier capable of making post-contact metres, makes a lot of tackles and is a strong jackler at the breakdown.
His scrummaging can be a bit inconsistent but he is capable at the set-piece and gave world-class Wallabies loosehead Angus Bell an outing at the Principality Stadium last November.
2. Dewi Lake (captain)
The Ospreys man will undoubtedly be bitterly disappointed to have missed out on a place on the Lions tour having been touted as a potential tourist for much of the past year.
A series of injuries which curtailed his minutes on the field, particularly during the Six Nations, probably damaged his chances.
But he will be a vitally important figure for Wales in Japan with his leadership, powerful carrying game, set-piece prowess and his work at the breakdown standing out.
1. Nicky Smith
The 31-year-old has been a revelation in his first season at Leicester Tigers and gave world-class Springboks tighthead Thomas du Toit a hiding at times in the Gallagher Premiership final.
Smith is a very destructive scrummager and it has been a long time since anyone got the better of the former Ospreys star at the set-piece.
The man from Swansea isn't the biggest prop but he carries well with his footwork at the point of contact - a nice trait - while he also gets through a lot of work in defence and at the breakdown.
Replacements
16. Elliot Dee
The experienced Dragons man is the most accurate hooker in Wales when it comes to throwing into the lineout.
Dee will have an important part to play in Japan but will probably be backing up Lake.
17. Gareth Thomas
The Ospreys prop is an underrated player who is a solid scrummager and hits really hard in defence.
18. Keiron Assiratti
The 27-year-old is a solid scrummager and a talented ball player.
It's imperative Wales gain the upper hand at scrum time and Assiratti is likely to share game-time with Griffin.
19. Freddie Thomas
The conditions and the style of play will likely suit the Gloucester lock in Japan. Get the latest breaking Welsh rugby news stories sent straight to your inbox with our FREE daily newsletter. Sign up here.
Thomas is an athletic forward who is comfortable playing a high octane and expansive brand of rugby.
20. Taine Plumtree
The 25-year-old was left out of the Six Nations squad due to his ill-discipline but proceeded to fix that issue and was outstanding for the Scarlets during the latter half of the season.
Plumtree's versatility will be useful for Wales.
21. Reuben Morgan-Williams
The 27-year-old has had to bide his time for a first cap but it is likely to come this summer which would be just rewards for his consistency for the Ospreys over the past few seasons.
22. Dan Edwards
As was stated above it is a close call between Costelow and Edwards for the starting berth.
Whatever direction Sherratt decides to go in Edwards will have a big role to play in Japan, whether that is through starting or seeing the game out as a replacement.
23. Macs Page
The 20-year-old is one of the finest prospects in Welsh rugby and has tons of x-factor.
Article continues below
Page is an explosive carrier with wicked footwork and a dangerous turn of pace. The uncapped Scarlets man, who can play centre or wing, looks destined for a long international career.

Wrexham owner and Hollywood star files documents to officially change his name
Wrexham FC co-owner Rob McElhenney's wife and his It's Sunny in Philadelphia co-star Kaitlin Olson claimed the couple's kids are not in favour of the name change Wrexham FC co-owner Rob McElhenney has filed documents to legally change his name. The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star, whose character in the show is known as Mac, wants to be known .by the name Rob Mac in real-life, according to documents filed in Los Angeles. The shortened versions of his first and last names are a far cry from his full title of Robert McElhenney III. He first mentioned his intention to change his name in an interview with US outlet Variety in May, telling them: 'As our business and our storytelling is expanding into other regions of the world and other languages in which my name is even harder to pronounce, I'm just going by Rob Mac. McElhenney's wife and It's Sunny in Philadelphia co-star Kaitlin Olson has said the couple's kids are not in favour of the change and suggested she is also concerned about it. She said: 'The kids are really not happy about it because they have that last name. And so do I, legally!'. He launched private company 'More Better Industries' in 2024, and was part owner of Philadelphia bar 'Mac's Tavern,' which announced Monday it was closing after 15 years in business. McElhenney, 48, and fellow Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, 48, bought Wrexham football club in 2021. They have since been credited with a 50 per cent surge in visitors to the Welsh city after charting the club's rise to the Championship on Disney+ series Welcome to Wrexham. The show is a big hit in the US, where last month alone more than 300,000 people searched for Wrexham content on internet site Reddit. Tourism chiefs say it is part of the set-jet trend inspired by what people see on TV.

Tomos Williams injury mars rampant Lions thrashing of Western Force
The British and Irish Lions claimed their first victory on Australian soil by overwhelming Western Force 54-7, but a possible injury crisis is brewing at scrum half after Tomos Williams was forced off. Williams was among the Lions' star performers at Optus Stadium but his match was over when he injured his left hamstring during the act of finishing his second try in the 47th minute. The Wales half-back limped from the pitch to leave the Lions sweating on his fitness given Jamison Gibson-Park has yet to play on tour because of a glute problem, potentially leaving Alex Mitchell as the only available option in the position. It was the biggest disappointment of a mixed evening for Andy Farrell 's men, who bounced back from their 28-24 defeat by Argentina with an eight-try demolition of the weakest of Australia's Super Rugby franchises while exposing areas of concern. The lack of cohesion in defence continued and the scrum took a step backwards after excelling against the Pumas as part of a shaky overall set-piece performance, but their passes stuck in attack and they created some classy tries. Henry Pollock, Joe McCarthy and James Lowe all advanced their claims to Test selection against the Wallabies, while fly half Finn Russell produced an inventive first outing on tour. Russell's fingerprints were over Dan Sheehan's fourth-minute try with his pinpoint kick to Lowe making the score possible, but the Force hit back with their first attack of the match when Nic White wriggled over. All the early pressure was coming from the hosts but they were turned over three times when in commanding positions, one of them occurring when man-of-the-match McCarthy pinched line-out ball. The Force were showing plenty of endeavour but the Lions' extra class was evident in the 16th minute when Pollock combined with Josh van der Flier, raced clear and then passed out of the tackle for Williams to score. And their accuracy was on display again in the 36th minute when Russell ran a quickly taken free-kick with Pollock and Elliot Daly in support and when he was stopped just short of the line, Daly was able to touch down. Pollock provocatively celebrated the try close to Force openside Nick Champion de Crespigny, igniting a flashpoint that drew in a large number of players. The England back row was then sin-binned, although his yellow card was the result of Ben O'Keeffe running out of patience with the number of Lions infringements. Pollock had yet to rejoin play when the Lions struck again early in the second half with wings Mack Hansen and Lowe involved in a counter attack that ended with Williams diving over in the corner for his fateful finish. Just 10 minutes after the interval and the Force defence was already tiring, allowing the tourists to force an easy open with Hansen supplying Garry Ringrose with the scoring pass. Back on the field, Pollock pounced on a loose ball to launch a counter that ended with McCarthy crossing and the gaps continued to appear with Marcus Smith, on for Russell at fly half, sending Daly over before Alex Mitchell landed the final blow.

Lions player ratings as Henry Pollock pure X factor but Irish duo need to up games
Lions player ratings as Henry Pollock pure X factor but Irish duo need to up games The British & Irish Lions are up and running. British & Irish Lions players react following their rugby match win against the Western Force in Perth (Image: AP Photo/Trevor Collens ) The British & Irish Lions got their tour of Australia off to a winning start with a comprehensive 54-7 victory over the Western Force in Perth. It was by no means perfect and they did endure a ropey first half but Andy Farrell's side seemed to click after the break as they crossed for eight tries in total. There were a number of impressive individual performances, while one or two others were below par and will need to up their game to make the Test side. Here are your player ratings. 15. Elliot Daly 7 A few eyebrows were raised when Daly was named in Farrell's original squad but this was an assured performance from the Englishman. His positional play was first class, while his kicking out of hand put the Force under pressure. Article continues below Daly does the less fashionable things well as he hit some good angles and some neat passing unlocked the Force defence. Grabbed himself a brace of tries. 14. Mack Hansen 7 The Connacht man did not have the best of first halves and was outplayed by Force wing Dylan Pietsch but he was much better after the break. Hansen hit some good lines in the second half while a nice offload to James Lowe ended up with Tomos Williams scoring in the early stages of the second half. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. He also put in a couple of key defensive interventions and his performance will have pleased Farrell. 13. Garry Ringrose 6 Defended well and brought with his line speed cutting off the Force attack on a couple of occasions during the first half. Ringrose was quietly effective, claiming a try during the second half but will need to up his game if he is to cement a spot in the Test side. 12. Sione Tuipulotu 7 Like many players Tuipulotu was quiet during the first half but came to life after the break. The Scotland star finished the game as the top carrier with 16, while he hit some good angles to rip through the Force defence. It's going to be tight between Tuipulotu and Bundee Aki for the number 12 shirt against the Wallabies. 11. James Lowe 8 The left-wing put in a strong performance on his Lions debut. He may not have got himself on the scoreboard but he played an influential role in five of the tries. A sumptuous offload put Dan Sheehan over, while he made a number of line breaks and his passing under pressure was top class. Lowe was used infield regularly and was effective as a playmaker. 10. Finn Russell 8 This was an assured display from the Lions playmaker who outlined why he is the frontrunner to wear the number 10 shirt against the Wallabies. Russell's range of passing unlocked the Force defence throughout the second half while his decision to take a penalty quickly set up Daly's try. He also kicked 10 points from the kicking tee and controlled the game well. 9. Tomos Williams 8 The Wales scrum-half put in a fine individual performance but it was ruined by an injury in the act of scoring a try. Williams was a constant threat with ball in hand and his support lines resulted in two tries for the Gloucester number nine. The 30-year-old's service was also slick while he got the balance right between when to kick, run and pass. Farrell will be hoping his injury is not too serious because he was excellent in Perth. Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free 8. Henry Pollock 8 This kid is pure X-factor and has the ability to rip open the tightest of defences. Unlocked the Force defence with a stunning break before offloading to Williams for their second try. Pollock also regathered his own kick to set up the Lions' sixth try to hammer home his point of difference. There are still a few too many errors in his game but with Pollock on the field Farrell knows there will be at least three or four standout moments which can turn a game in their favour. Blotted his copybook with a yellow card. 7. Josh van der Flier 7 The experienced Irishman put in a huge defensive shift with 22 tackles made as he helped keep the Force to just the one try in what was a ferocious onslaught by the hosts during the opening quarter. His counter rucking is an underrated part of the game while he also carried well. But there were no turnovers for the Leinster star with referee Ben O'Keeffe not awarding a single jackal penalty over the course of the 80 minutes. 6. Tadhg Beirne 5 Not his greatest game. The experienced forward wasn't at his dynamic best and conceded too many penalties in the first half. Beirne was effective at the lineout but there were no trademark carries or turnovers from the Ireland star. He can play much better than this and needs to up his game over the next few weeks. 5. Scott Cummings 5 The Scotsman got through a lot of work in making five carries and 12 tackles while he also denied the Force a try at the stroke of half-time by holding the hosts up over the line. This was a tidy performance but he did not set the world on fire either. The Force pack were on top for most of the first half before they tired and the Lions gained the upper hand after the break. Cummings didn't do enough to threaten the Test side. 4. Joe McCarthy (Star man) 9 Outstanding! The Irish lock made some key interventions while the Lions were under pressure in the first half. A tremendous rip at the maul probably saved a try, while he achieved two further turnovers. McCarthy made 15 powerful carries and caused havoc with his counter rucking while he also put in 17 tackles. Claimed a well-deserved try for good measure and has put down a strong claim to partner Maro Itoje at lock for the Tests. 3. Tadhg Furlong 5 This was not his greatest game. It will probably go under the radar due to the margin of victory but the Lions scrum struggled and Wallabies loosehead Tom Robertson had Furlong under huge pressure. The experienced Ireland tighthead was also not as prominent as usual around the park. He needs to up his game. 2. Dan Sheehan 6 The Lions captain put in a solid performance with 12 tackles and five carries. Sheehan also scored the opening try with and put in a big shift around the park even if he did not set the world alight. On the whole the lineout was a lot better than it was against Argentina in Dublin which is credit to Sheehan. Get the latest breaking Welsh rugby news stories sent straight to your inbox with our FREE daily newsletter. Sign up here. 1. Pierre Schoeman 5 The Scotland prop was industrious if not spectacular with 10 tackles and four carries. But he was under severe pressure at a couple of scrums and another referee would have penalised the Lions. Needs to do better if he is to have a chance of overtaking Ellis Genge and Andrew Porter for the Tests. Replacements 16. Ronan Kelleher 6 Only got 14 minutes on the field but got a few powerful carries, while the lineout functioned well. 17. Andrew Porter 6 Solid upon entering the fray with a couple of decent carries and scrummaged well. 18. Will Stuart 6 The Gallagher Premiership winner was solid and will fancy his chances of putting pressure on Tadhg Furlong for the Test team. 19. Ollie Chessum 7 The England star looked very prominent after coming onto the field and ensured the lineout ran smoothly. 20. Jack Conan 6 A couple of powerful carries but also fumbled the ball forward once when the Lions had momentum. 21. Alex Mitchell 7 Looked sharp after replacing Williams and finished a try superbly at the death. 22. Huw Jones 6 The Scotland centre looked dangerous will ball in hand and will surely get a start against the Queensland Reds in midweek. Article continues below 23. Marcus Smith 7 Did well after replacing Russell with his vision and passing helping to add a few extra tries. Also contributed four points from the kicking tee.
