Sarawak rolls out special cash aid for tertiary students, RM50.4 mln allocated
KUCHING (July 30): The Sarawak government has allocated RM50.4 million for the Special Financial Aid (BKK) to support Sarawakian students pursuing higher education during its launch in Kuala Lumpur today.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the launch announced that each eligible student will receive RM1,200, disbursed in two phases of RM600 per semester via the S Pay Global platform.
Open to all Sarawakian students regardless of household income, the BKK aims to ease the financial burden on families and help students focus on their academic journey.
The aid is expected to benefit around 42,000 Sarawakian students currently enrolled in institutions of higher learning nationwide.
'The Sarawak government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has delivered on its promise. This shows that we care, not only about the students as Sarawakians, but because we are a government that is genuinely concerned about the future of our state,' said Abang Johari.
Also at the ceremony here were Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof; Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi; Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Sarawak Attorney-General Dato Sri Saferi Ali; and other dignitaries.
The Premier described the BKK as part of a larger strategy to empower youth through education and enhance Sarawak's global economic competitiveness.
'This assistance is provided regardless of students' backgrounds. We want to cultivate a generation that is knowledgeable, competitive and ready to seize opportunities not just within Sarawak, but internationally,' he said.
Abang Johari also stressed the importance of preparing Sarawak's youth to become globally competent professionals in an increasingly borderless economic landscape.
'This is a strategic form of assistance. We have bright Sarawakian students who are intellectually capable and can pursue studies that are relevant to current global economic developments,' he said.
He further noted that application numbers are expected to increase and reaffirmed the state's commitment to introducing more student-focused initiatives in the future.
Introduced as part of Abang Johari's winding-up speech during the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting in November last year, the assistance was initially targeted at students from households with a per capita income of RM1,500 or below.
However, the eligibility has since been broadened to include all full-time diploma and bachelor's degree students with Sarawakian status, regardless of socioeconomic background.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, in his speech said the aid is designed not only to ease students' financial pressures but also to motivate them to excel in their studies.

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): From a humble start-up capital of just RM5,000, Sabah's prominent young entrepreneur and athlete Jonathan Wong has built a thriving aquaculture business with annual revenue surpassing RM1 million in just nine years. In recognition of his achievements, Jonathan was conferred the 'Penternak Ikan Jaya' award by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the award presentation and closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 held at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Sunday. He received a trophy and RM20,000 cash prize from Anwar, in the presence of the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup and Deputy Chief Minister cum Agriculture and Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan. Moving forward, Jonathan said his company aims to adopt more IoT-based systems to increase both production output and quality through smart farming technologies. 'We will implement more modern technologies and methods to improve the survival rates and the quality of aquaculture products,' he said. Jonathan is known for his boldness in innovation, having cultured duckweed as a key ingredient in fish feed, a breakthrough that earned him the Most Outstanding Commercial Collaboration Award in Eskpo Kecemerlangan Reka Cipta (Excocipta) 2024. Jonathan is not only a successful young entrepreneur with a sharp business acumen but also a world-class athlete, having represented Malaysia in international long jump competitions. He has won numerous major awards, including two gold medals at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix and making it into the Paralympic finals twice, bringing glory to the nation. Wong is also dedicated to nurturing future athletes. Cross-border RTS 2 to spur development in Iskandar Puteri: HLIB
KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed RTS 2 link between Tuas and Iskandar Puteri, could be a major catalyst for Iskandar Puteri region, especially amid rising cross-border activity under Johor-Singapore Speciali Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB) said while still at an early discussion stage, the RTS 2 proposal was timely and strategically important. HLIB said the JS-SEZ is expected to drive substantial cross-border economic activity and workforce mobility, and a second RTS link would play a key role in easing congestion, improving connectivity and supporting sustained growth in cross-border commuting. However, no specific details on alignment, stop locations or implementation timelines have been disclosed at this juncture. "If realised, RTS 2 could be a major catalyst for Iskandar Puteri, similar to the impact seen around the existing RTS link in JB. "Residential property prices near the current RTS station surged significantly, doubling in just a few years prior to operations commencement, highlighting the powerful value uplift potential of cross-border transit infrastructure," it said. HLIB believe RTS 2 could replicate this trend in Iskandar Puteri, benefitting developers with strategic landbank exposure in the area, notably Sunway Group and UEM Sunrise Bhd. Meanwhile, the firm said for perspective, new high-rise launches near the existing RTS corridor are now commanding prices of RM1,000 to RM1,500 per square foot. In contrast, there have been few recent high-rise launches in Iskandar Puteri. For comparison, it said Sunway's Maple Residences, a landed project launched in late 2024, was priced at just RM550 per square foot. HLIB added that the introduction of RTS 2 would not only uplift property prices in the region but also shift development dynamics. It noted that improved accessibility would justify a move from low-density landed homes to higher-density high-rise developments, improving land efficiency and allowing developers to extract greater value from their landbank.
