Sentix poll shows sharp uptick in German, euro zone investor sentiment for June
The Sentix index for the euro zone rose to 0.2 in June from -8.1 in May, beating the forecast for a reading of -6.0.
While the sentiment index for Germany was still clearly in negative territory at -5.9, optimism at a new conservative-led government taking office, a belief in the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine and the fading of the initial shock at U.S. tariffs policy were all helping drive an improvement.
The current assessment of the German economy among the 1,055 investors participating in the survey improved for the fourth consecutive month, even if it too remained in negative territory at -26.8.
"In recent years, the stagnation of the German economy has repeatedly acted as a brake on the European economy," the survey company wrote. "Now the Sentix economic indices in the eurozone are benefiting from the catch-up movement that Germany is sending out."
Expectations for the eurozone climbed 10.5 points, to 14.3, making for a cumulative improvement over the past two months of 30.1 points.
"The June data ... indicates an upturn in the European economic region," Sentix wrote.
Sentix's poll was conducted from June 5-7.

UK targets 135 Russian 'shadow fleet' tankers with fresh sanctions
LONDON, July 21 (Reuters) - Britain on Monday imposed new sanctions on Russia's so-called "shadow fleet", targeting 135 oil tankers along with two Russian firms, shipping company Intershipping Services LLC and oil trader Litasco Middle East DMCC. The oil tankers are critical to Russia's energy and oil sectors, with the British government saying they form part of the fleet responsible for carrying $24 billion worth of cargo since the start of 2024. Foreign minister David Lammy said the new sanctions would further "dismantle" Russian President Vladimir Putin's so-called "shadow fleet and drain Russia's war chest of its critical oil revenues". The government said Intershipping Services LLC is responsible for registering vessels under the Gabonese flag, enabling them to transport up to $10 billion worth of goods annually on behalf of the Russian state. Sanctions were also imposed on Litasco Middle East DMCC for its continued role in shipping large volumes of Russian oil, the government said. The Russian embassy in London did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the latest sanctions. Moscow has previously called Western sanctions illegal and said they destabilise global energy markets. On Friday, the European Union agreed an 18th package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine, including measures aimed at dealing further blows to the Russian oil and energy industry. As part of that, the EU and Britain set out plans to lower the crude oil price cap from $60 per barrel to $47.60 to disrupt Russia's oil revenues.

Romania to buy Israeli anti-aircraft systems for $2.3 bln
July 21 (Reuters) - Romania has signed a framework agreement to buy Israeli-made Shorad-Vshorad anti-aircraft systems for more than 2 billion euros ($2.3 billion), the Romanian defence ministry said on Monday. Under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, Romania and other European countries have been looking to increase their defence spending since Russia's full-scale invasion of neighbouring Ukraine in 2022. The European Union and NATO member state, which shares a 650 km (400 mile) border with Ukraine, has had Russian drone fragments fall onto its territory repeatedly over the past two years as Moscow attacks Ukrainian port infrastructure. The framework agreement with the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems - maker with U.S. backing of Israel's Iron Dome defence system - provides for the signing of three further contracts, through which six integrated anti-aircraft systems will be acquired. The contracts will also cover training, ammunition and logistical support. The framework agreement will run for seven years, with the first two Vshorad systems to be delivered within three years of the signing of the first of the three further contracts, the ministry said.
