Can Jeff Koons take a joke? This Bay Area artist is about to find out

Sometimes, you hear an idea for an art project that's so smart and funny, you can't wait to see how it gets realized. That was how I felt when Santa Clara artist Kathy Aoki told me about her developing series 'Koons Ruins.'
The Koons in question is one of the most famous living artists in the world: Jeff Koons. The 70-year-old has been ubiquitous in the art market since the 1980s, known for works that reference everyday objects — basketballs, action figures, barware — that he heightens by inflating their scale and adding a glossy, pop culture sheen. Even if you don't know his name, you might recognize his work: 'Balloon Dog' and 'Tulips' sculptures, both made to resemble the kind of twisty balloon creations made by clowns; his gargantuan 'Puppy,' covered in flowers and greenery; or 'Come Through With Taste — Myers's Dark Rum — Quote Newsweek,' a fake magazine advertisement.
Koons calls himself 'an idea person' and is not involved in the actual fabrication of his work. Still, his art sells for millions of dollars and is in museum collections across the globe.
'Even if people aren't familiar with his work, they can recognize gross commercialism when they see it,' Aoki told me, quick to state that she does not hate Koons or all of his work. 'But when he talks, I can't tell if he's smiling to himself like he's pulled the wool over the eyes of all these institutional directors, investors and collectors, or if he really believes in the work that he's making.'
With its commentary about the art market, collectors and blue chip art that Aoki brings to Koons' work, she goes much deeper than the artist himself. 'Koons Ruins' is currently getting a high-profile preview this month on the Salesforce Tower's 'Day for Night' video installation. Aoki's five-minute animation features giant chipmunks roosting on a buried balloon dog sculpture and tractors bearing the 'Koons Ruins' logo. In the finale, a balloon sculpture is tossed over a waterfall, rises, and then sinks into bubbles. The video runs most days beginning at midnight.
What made me fall in love with the 'Koons Ruins' project is the storytelling. Aoki, 56, invented an art collector named Dorothea James who was so offended by Koons' work that she makes it her mission to buy as much of it as possible so she can destroy it. The wrecked pieces are eventually put on view at her estate, now dubbed 'Koons Ruins,' and opened to the public upon her death.
'She goes so far as to hire her own team of chemists to undo the proprietary coating that Jeff Koons has made for his sculptures,' Aoki explained of the character. 'I'm enjoying exploring her character more, and why she's taken it this far.'
When I met Aoki at her room at the Hotel Del Sol during the Startup Art Fair San Francisco in April, she had transformed the space into a visitors' center for the nonexistent location with a topographic map of the imagined art park, peepholes where you could see images of degraded Koons art, animation and even an audio tour. I laughed at installations that rated different Koons works for their level of offensiveness. I browsed the 'gift shop' with its T-shirts featuring crossed out balloon dog 'Koons Ruins' logos.
Aoki is currently a fellow at the Lucas Artists Residency Program at Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga and will be working a San Francisco residency at the Space Program in the fall. But the biggest supporter of her project is the New York-based nonprofit Creative Capital, which gave Aoki a $50,000 grant for the project this year.
While Aoki has previously dipped into the pool of pop culture commentary and large-scale art with pieces like her 'Gwen Stefani Grand Burial Exhibition' (2009-16) and her 'Hello Kitty Monument' (2012-20), she is in new legal territory with Koons. Because her work references existing work by the living and notoriously litigious artist, she is carefully navigating how much of his works she can depict and how.
Showing images she's created of Koons' art in various stages of decay have so far felt safe, she said, but she remains cautious. Aoki knows of the 2011 cease and desist letter San Francisco gallery Park Life received from Koons after selling bookends in the shapes of balloon dogs. (Koons himself has been the subject of at least four copyright infringement lawsuits.)
But one of the benefits of Aoki's Creative Capital grant is access to lawyers who will advise her of her legal rights as an artist. Aoki's hope is that she can use the grant to create large, 'immersive scenes' that will pay homage to her practice as a print maker while also using two-dimensional elements.
Eventually, however, she wants to take the narrative further.
'I would like to make a mockumentary film about the 'Koons Ruins,'' Aoki told me. 'There's just so many different elements of the story and approaches I'm excited about.'

Grouchy Pomeranian Pretends to Be Asleep Until Mom Mentions His Favorite Snack

Grouchy Pomeranian Pretends to Be Asleep Until Mom Mentions His Favorite Snack originally appeared on PetHelpful. If you have a pet at home, you know how quickly they learn certain words, as well as how to ignore them, too. Luffy is a Pomeranian puppy who already knows several food-related words, but he's only a fan of one of them as you'll see in this video his mom posted recently. Make sure your sound is on so that you can hear Mom list off several words that Luffy, who is pretending to be napping, doesn't pay any attention to. But when she mentions his favorite snack, the look on his face is priceless! Luffy's mom says in the video's caption, "He hears what he wants to hear." Luffy reminds us a lot of a toddler because they're the exact same way! Viewers of the short and sweet video had a lot to say about it and left nearly 1,000 comments. @milliepommybrown joked, "Did someone sayyy chickennnnn LOL!" @Windy Geiger-Stiener pointed out, "His little eyeball peek as you roll through the options..." @Kele added, "That's the password! Who would have thought?!"Healthy Treats for Your Pup If you have a pooch who is a fan of human foods, there are plenty that you can offer them that are both nutritious and yummy. All of the foods that Luffy's mom listed off are great options for your pup, as well as many other fruits and veggies. With summer heat finally here, there are some great water-dense foods that you can offer to your dog either as-is or frozen for a crunchy treat like cantaloupe, watermelon, mangoes, different berries, and spinach and celery. Top Dog Tips offers this tip about celery, "When feeding your dog celery, make sure to remove leaves and cut celery sticks into smaller pieces to avoid choking hazards. It's also important to note that eating too much celery can have a diuretic effect on the dog." Though all of these treats are healthy, that doesn't mean that you can feed your fur baby as much of them as they'll eat. Opt to serve them in small quantities as an occasional treat instead of offering them all day, every day. Golden Retriever Puppy's Pure Joy Over Playing With Watermelon Is Contagious

Golden Retriever Puppy's Pure Joy Over Playing With Watermelon Is Contagious originally appeared on PetHelpful. If you need a little something to brighten your day, this video of a Golden Retriever puppy named Goose playing with a watermelon is exactly what you're looking for. And if you've never thought about giving your dog a melon to play with, consider this your sign to try it! The video begins with Goose's dad setting the watermelon on the floor for him to check out. Goose's reaction is immediate and absolutely a joy to see! Make sure your sound is on because the song that accompanies the video makes it even better! My kids actually sent me this TikTok and said, "Mom! You have to write about this one!" They also said that now we have to go to the store to get our pooch a melon, which I can't disagree with. Goose's excitement is contagious, and we can't wait to see if our fur baby has the same reaction!Commenter Reactions to Goose the Golden Retriever Playing with a Watermelon It probably won't come as a surprise that Goose's video went wildly viral, racking up nearly 20 million views, 2.5 million likes, and close to 10,000 comments. People couldn't get enough of watching all that pure puppy joy in action! @chokedemturtles got more than 83,000 likes when they admitted, "I'm not sure I've ever been as happy as goose with a watermelon lol!" @Princess Polly agreed, "I aspire to be like Goose one day..." Some big named brands stopped by to comment, too. @Dutch Bros Coffee swooned, "This is the cutest thing ever!!!" Fast food chain @Krystal said, "We want what he's having." @Honey Maid pointed out, "It's the little things in life." @Nat Geo Animals added, "We feel the same way tbh..." @Sarah asked what we were all wondering about the sweet treat, "But how did you learn this is what brings him happiness in life?! LOL!" We're guessing it was probably by accident, and it was a happy accident at that! Watermelon can be a great summer treat for dogs since it's both refreshing and hydrating. You can serve it to them as soon as you cut it or freeze it for a fun treat. Just make sure to remove any seeds and the rind, as both can cause digestive issues, including diarrhea or stomach upset. That would definitely kill the mood! Dog Wants To Show Owner How He Eats Kibble in Adorable Video

Sometimes dogs adapt unique eating habits that make them all the more cute. In one such Instagram video, a Chihuahua puppy named Ernie shows the dog owner how he eats his kibble one at a time. His adorable way of chomping on his food leaves the pet parent laughing. In the caption, the uploader questions viewers, 'Anyone else's dog grab a piece of kibble then brings it over to you to eat?' Dog comes running to owner every time he starts eating kibble In an adorable Instagram video, a dog owner shows how her Chihuahua, Ernie, has a unique eating habit when it comes to kibble. It begins with the dog running to his crate and bringing one kibble at a time to the pet parent. He does not bring the treat to give it to his dog mom, but to show her how he eats it. Moreover, he makes cute munching noises while eating a single kibble in the clip. Ernie repeats the process multiple times before he grabs two kibbles that stick to each other. Although he initially brings the treat to the owner, the puppy drops it once he hops onto the carpet. Then, he tries to separate the kibbles, but his efforts go in vain. It seems the pet doesn't like eating more than one treat at a time. Explaining the same, the pet parent explains in the caption: 'Ernie will sometimes carry two pieces of kibble in his mouth but then drops one to eat only one kibble at a time.' The owner finds it 'cute.' Meanwhile, viewers found the video absolutely adorable, as they shared their opinions in the comments. A user wrote, 'Sweetest crunch I've ever heard,' while another lovingly said, 'Omg what a baby.' One individual commented, 'Chiwawas do that, they wanna eat wherever you are, and wait for you to stay at one place and then start eating.' Many found Ernie's habit relatable and shared the stories of their pets. Netizens also called the furbaby 'cute' and 'adorable.' Since the upload, the video has garnered over 26k likes and 215k views. The post Dog Wants To Show Owner How He Eats Kibble in Adorable Video appeared first on DogTime. Solve the daily Crossword
