Summer McIntosh caps historic swim worlds with fourth individual gold; U.S. wins most medals

NBC Sports9 hours ago
Summer McIntosh capped arguably the best world championships for a female swimmer by winning her fourth individual gold medal.
McIntosh, an 18-year-old Canadian, swam the third-fastest 400m individual medley in history — 4 minutes, 25.78 seconds, distancing the field by 7.48 seconds. McIntosh holds the four fastest times ever in the event, including the world record of 4:23.65.
She became the second female swimmer to win four individual golds at a single worlds — also taking the 400m freestyle, 200m IM and 200m butterfly earlier in the meet. She tacked on an 800m free bronze Saturday.
Katie Ledecky, who won Saturday's 800m free, is the only other female swimmer to claim four individual golds at a worlds (200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m frees in 2015). Swede Sarah Sjostrom is the only other female swimmer to earn five individual medals at one worlds (2019).
SWIMMING WORLDS: Results
Overall, the U.S. earned the most medals for a 17th consecutive worlds dating to 1991 — including at least one medal in 15 of the 18 individual women's events.
The U.S. men claimed one individual gold medal (Luca Urlando, 200m butterfly), matching their fewest at a worlds (1994, 2015).
A majority of the 47 total American swimmers were affected to varying degrees by acute gastroenteritis, or a stomach bug, leading into and during the meet.
'I think nobody really understands kind of what the group has been through unless you are on this trip,' national team managing director Greg Meehan said on Peacock. 'The challenges were incredible. When you have people losing 15 pounds, 20 pounds, that's a lot, and they have persevered.'
Also Sunday, France's Leon Marchand became the first man to sweep the 200m and 400m IMs for a third worlds, taking the latter by 3.59 seconds in 4:04.73, the fifth-fastest time in history.
Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi won the 1500m free to complete a sweep of the men's distance races.
American Bobby Finke, the Olympic gold medalist and world record holder, earned bronze — making it five medals in his last five global championships in the event.
Finke said before placing fourth in Wednesday's 800m free that his personal goals were derailed by the stomach bug.
'This meet's been quite a whirlwind,' he said after Sunday's race. 'I'm disappointed with my results, but that's on me. I've just got to do better next year.
'I'm happy to be on the podium. It's obviously not the place I want. My endurance was a little bit better after the 800m. I think it showed there (in the 1500m).'
Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte won a fourth consecutive world title in the 50m breaststroke, 13 years after taking Olympic 100m breast gold at age 15.
American Lilly King, who followed Meilutyte as Olympic 100m breast champ in 2016, finished fifth in Sunday's 50m breast in the last race of her career.
In the 50m backstroke, Kliment Kolesnikov, a neutral athlete from Russia, won by tying his own second-fastest time in history (23.68). His world record is 23.55.
World Championships highlights air next Saturday at 1 p.m. ET on NBC.

White's two homers drive Braves to 4-2 win over Reds in MLB Speedway Classic

Eli White belted two home runs to propel the Atlanta Braves across the finish line with a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in Major League Baseball's "Speedway Classic" at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday. The unique contest on a specially built ballpark on the infield of the US stock car oval track had to resort to a restart after heavy rain brought out the red flag with less than an inning completed and the Reds up 1-0 on Saturday. MLB announced a record attendance of 91,032, and those that made it back on Saturday were treated to a show by White, who was in the lineup because Ronald Acuna Jr. was sent to the injured list with a calf strain on Tuesday. White belted a three-run homer off Reds pitcher Brent Suter in the second inning, a 411-foot (125m) blast that bounced off the banked track beyond the left field wall, hit the safer barrier and gave Atlanta a 3-1 lead. As White rounded the bases, a race car decked out in red, white and blue circled the racetrack, a passenger holding a "Home Run" flag out the window. White brought out the Home Run Car again in the seventh, leading off the inning with a solo homer off Scott Barlow. The 31-year-old posted the second multi-homer game of his career and his first with four runs-batted-in. "It's super-special for me," White said. "Being here, just trying to soak it all in and be able to have a big day and come through for the team is just something I'll cherish for a long time." A throng of fans -- lured by the novelty of the event, a pre-game concert and a chance to break the 71-year-old MLB regular-season attendance record of 84,587 -- had waited through two rain delays totalling more than two hours on Saturday night before MLB postponed until Sunday. When play resumed, Hurston Waldrep was pitching for Atlanta, having traveled some 250 miles on Sunday morning after being called up from the minor leagues. He surrendered one run over 5 2/3 innings for his first major league win in his third MLB start. Despite the weather, players were enthusiastic about the event at the iconic 64-year-old racetrack in rural northeastern Tennessee, which typically fills all 146,000 seats for NASCAR series races. - 'Incredible opportunity' - "Never really dreamed of this," Cincinnati's Spencer Steer said Saturday. "You think of 85,000 people you think of NFL or college football. A very incredible opportunity." In 2016, a collegiate American football game in the speedway infield dubbed the Battle at Bristol drew 156,990 fans to see Tennessee beat Virginia Tech 45-24. An NFL exhibition game on the Bristol infield between Washington and Philadelphia in 1961 drew only 8,500 spectators back when seating capacity was only 18,000. MLB built its field in the infield between turns three and four, bringing in several tons of gravel to create a level field and removing a building from what would become the outfield. Celebrities in attendance included baseball Hall of Famers Johnny Bench and Chipper Jones and NASCAR stars Kyle Busch and Chse Elliott. "My first thought is I can't believe they did all this for one game," Braves first baseman Matt Olson said. "It's pretty incredible." MLB's previous regular-season games at special venues included at the Field of Dreams movie ballpark in an Iowa cornfield in 2021 and 2022. MLB has also staged regular-season games in Australia, South Korea, Japan, England, Mexico and Puerto Rico. bb/js

Liverpool CLOSING in on agreeing Alexander Isak transfer

Liverpool are now closing in on convincing Newcastle United to agree the transfer of Alexander Isak. The Reds have already had one bid rejected by Newcastle this summer for the services of the Swedish international. 🔴 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Richard Hughes has identified him as his dream target for the summer window and he knows he still has a good chance at bringing him to Anfield. Despite Newcastle's reluctance to allow Isak to leave, the Swede has made it clear that he sees his future elsewhere. More specifically, he sees his future at Liverpool. That strong desire and Isak's actions to train in Spain rather than in Newcastle's own facilities on Tyneside after missing their tour to Asia make his intentions clear and will force Newcastle's hands. It has already forced them to react. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range They are making moves to source replacements for Isak. As Craig Hope from the Daily Mail said on his YouTube channel, it's only after these moves that the club would then allow Isak to leave. And now it seems like that could be a step closer. Newcastle's primary targets seem to be Benjamin Sesko and Yoane Wissa. Both of them now look likely to end up at Newcastle, putting Liverpool within inches of being able to agree a deal for Isak. In the English media Sesko's decision still seems up in the air. However, back in his homeland, Slovenian outlet Delo has claimed that Sesko has already agreed to join Newcastle. The only aspect that remains is the Magpies agreeing a deal with RB Leipzig. Although this appears to be quite close as well. Once Sesko signs, the doors will open for Liverpool to sign Isak. But there's still one condition to meet. Newcastle want to sign at least two strikers to replace Isak. The other striker in the club's sight is Wissa from Brentford. After losing their manager and several of their key players, Brentford have been reluctant to sell Wissa. However it seems like their stance has changed. After Sky Sports reported that Wissa decided not to play in Brentford's friendly this weekend, talkSPORT has now claimed that Brentford have changed their stance on their player leaving the club. They are now open to selling Wissa, which is another significant boost for Liverpool in this never ending chain to secure Isak. Nonetheless, it seems like things are heading in the right direction. Liverpool are closer and closer in their dream to sign Isak. Right now it feels like a matter of when, not if. With Newcastle closing in on their targets, an agreement for Isak is just around the corner.

Sha'Carri Richardson narrowly misses qualifying for 200-meter final, ending her US championships

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Sha'Carri Richardson narrowly missed qualifying for the 200-meter final Sunday at the U.S. track and field championships, concluding what's been a tumultuous week for the sprinter in the Pacific Northwest. Richardson wound up fourth in her heat in a time of 22.56 seconds. The top two finishers in each heat advance along with the next three fastest times. Madison Whyte edged her out on time by running 22.55 seconds in the same heat. A week ago, Richardson was arrested on a fourth-degree domestic violence offense for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, sprinter Christian Coleman, at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. She was booked into South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, for more than 18 hours. Days later, Richardson, 25, ran the opening round of the 100 meters at nationals before withdrawing from the event. She has an automatic spot to worlds next month in Tokyo as the defending 100-meter champion. This was Richardson's first 200 race of the season. She won a bronze medal at the distance during the 2023 world championships in Budapest. It was part of a stellar showing at worlds that season, as she also won the 100 and helped the 4x100 relay to a gold. A year later, Richardson finished with the silver medal in the 100 at the Paris Games. Richardson had a positive marijuana test at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials and didn't compete at the Tokyo Games. ___
