UN teams deploy to Syrian coast as wildfires force hundreds to flee
U.N. Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria Adam Abdelmoula said in a statement that the fast-spreading blazes in the northwestern province of Latakia 'have forced hundreds of families to flee their homes, while vast tracts of agricultural land and vital infrastructure have been destroyed.'
U.N. teams are 'conducting urgent assessments to determine the scale of the disaster and to identify the most immediate humanitarian needs,' he said.
Firefighting teams from Turkey and Jordan have joined Syrian civil defense teams, providing support from the air with helicopters. Syria's state-run SANA news agency reported that emergency crews are attempting to prevent the blazes from reaching the al-Frunloq natural reserve, with its 'large, interconnected forests.'
Syrian Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh called the situation 'extremely tragic.'
In a statement posted on X, he said the fires had destroyed 'hundreds of thousands of trees' covering an area estimated at 10,000 hectares.
'We regret and mourn every tree that burned, which was a source of fresh air for us,' al-Saleh said.
The Syrian Civil Defense had expressed concerns over the presence of unexploded ordnance left over from the country's nearly 14-year civil war in some of the wildfire areas.
Summer fires are common in the eastern Mediterranean region, where experts warn that climate change is intensifying conditions.
Below-average rainfalls over the winter have also left Syrians struggling with water shortages this summer, as the springs and rivers that normally supply much of the population with drinking water have gone dry.

Wildfires Burn in Spain and France After Blistering Heat Wave
Wildfires were raging in Spain and France on Tuesday after a dayslong heat wave parched landscapes in the region and turned woodlands into tinderboxes. At least five people and five firefighters were injured in southern France, where a blaze in the commune of Narbonne was burning for a second day, according to the local authorities. Officials said in a statement that the wildfire had already scorched nearly 5,000 acres of land and that more than 1,000 firefighters were working to bring it under control. The French weather agency also warned that there was a high risk of forest fires elsewhere in the country, given the windy conditions. Across the border in Spain, the Catalonia regional authorities ordered residents in nearly a dozen towns and neighborhoods to remain in their homes as firefighters battled a blaze that the area's emergency services said had burned nearly 6,000 acres since Monday. Acropolis shuts, outdoor work halted as heatwave scorches Greece
Greece's top archaeological monument, the Acropolis, was partially shut Tuesday as part of emergency measures to protect visitors and workers around the country during a four-day heatwave. The Greek culture ministry said the world-renowned site would be shut till 5:00 pm (1400 GMT) "for the safety of workers and visitors, owing to high temperatures." The four-day heatwave confirmed by meteorologists began Sunday is the second to grip Greece since late June. Temperatures are expected to reach 42 Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit) on Tuesday, with a maximum of 38 Celsius in Athens. Similar temperatures are expected on Wednesday. To protect outdoor workers, the labour ministry has decreed a work stoppage from 12:00 to 5:00 pm in various parts of the country, including several islands. The stoppage mainly affects construction work and delivery riders. "Days with a heatwave make my job more difficult," cycle-riding courier Michalis Keskinidis told AFP. "We drink a lot of water to protect ourselves from the heat, combined with electrolytes, and take breaks whenever possible," the 43-year-old said. On Tuesday, heavy rain and gale-force winds flooded roads, knocked down trees and caused power outages at the Croatian port town of Split, the state-run HRT broadcaster reported. At the town's port, a ferry broke its moorings and hit a catamaran and a tourist excursion boat, sinking the latter. There was similar trouble further north, with storms raging in Hungary and Slovakia. In Budapest, strong winds damaged roofs, felled trees onto roads and downed power lines on Monday, with the national meteorological service HungaroMet measuring winds up to 137 kilometres (85 miles) per hour locally. Rail traffic was severely disrupted across Hungary with full restoration of services potentially requiring weeks, according to Construction and Transport Minister Janos Lazar. Greece shuts the Acropolis as work restrictions remain amid heatwave
Authorities closed the Acropolis for several hours on Tuesday over high temperatures as work restrictions remained in effect in other parts of Greece. A Culture Ministry archaeological service announced the closure between 1pm and 5pm. Mandatory work breaks were imposed in several other regions, mostly on islands and parts of central Greece, where temperatures exceeded 40C. The measures started on Monday for outdoor workers. Those who do not comply face a 2,000 euro (£1,728) fine per worker. Authorities said the risk of wildfires, already 'very high' across the eastern mainland, is expected to increase during the week.
