Gipson-Long pitches effectively and Torkelson homers as the Tigers beat the Orioles 5-3
BALTIMORE (AP) — Spencer Torkelson homered and Sawyer Gipson-Long pitched effectively out of the bullpen to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Tuesday night.
Zach McKinstry hit two triples for the Tigers, who have won 11 of 15 and own the best record in the majors at 44-24. Detroit is 4-0 against the Orioles this season, outscoring them 22-9.
Making his second start of the season as an opener for the Tigers, Brant Hurter allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings. Chase Lee (3-0) got the last out in the third, and Gipson-Long entered in the fourth after Javier Baez hit an RBI single in the top half for a 2-1 lead.
Making his second appearance of the year after missing the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John and hip surgeries, Gipson-Long gave up one run and three hits with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
Gipson-Long began the 2024 season on the IL with a groin strain. After just one rehab start, he underwent elbow surgery that April, followed by left hip surgery in July.
The 27-year-old right-hander finally returned to the big leagues last week, but did not get a decision against the White Sox.
Detroit scored five runs off Cade Povich (1-5) in the first five innings. The big blow was Torkelson's 16th homer, a drive to center with a man on that made it 5-1 in the fifth.

Not only did Goldschmidt's throw not get the second out of the seventh inning but the Gold Glove first baseman's miscue was the ninth error in four games for the Yankees, who committed two Friday night in a 12-5 loss to Philadelphia that dropped them 5 1/2 games back of AL East-leading Toronto. 'I was playing in and he hit a little bit to my right, a little soft and I knew going to be a bang-bang play at first and tried to get him at home,' said Goldschmidt, a four-time Gold Glove winner. 'Looking back, I should have just made the play and went to first base there. I think even if I put that throw perfect, Turner's probably still beating that out." With Turner on third and Kyle Schwarber on second, Castellanos hit a 42-foot grounder at 61.4 mph to Goldschmidt, who was playing in. At the edge of the grass, Goldschmidt moved to his right, made an off-balance throw and the ball sailed over catcher Austin Wells' glove as Turner scored the tying run, Schwarber took third and Castellanos second. 'Probably too aggressive of a play by me to try and make a play where they were going to be safe anyway and it led to another base runner rather than just getting the out at first," Goldschmidt said. "So that was a mistake.' It was Goldschmidt's third error this season and the Yankees' 54th. Two pitches later, Luke Weaver hung a changeup that J.T. Realmuto hit for a tiebreaking, three-run homer. 'You're Paul Goldschmidt and you trust that I'm going to throw the ball on line,' manager Aaron Boone said. 'Even if we don't have a play there, maybe something happens. The runner trips or something, so you're trying to make a play there.' Weaver allowed his fifth homer in 12 appearances since making a quick return from a hamstring injury on June 20. He allowed home runs in three straight outings July 1-4 and had four straight scoreless appearances before Friday. New York's relievers allowed 10 runs and has a 4.28 ERA, 23rd among the 30 teams. Realmuto followed the Yankees' ninth error in four games with a tiebreaking, three-run drive in a four-run seventh inning, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies over New York 12-5 on Friday night. Schwarber's tying drive in the fifth off Will Warren was his 1,000th hit and 319th homer, the most for a player reaching 1,000 — eight more than Mark McGwire. Trea Turner had his fourth four-hit game this year, including a triple, and walked for the Phillies, who scored 10 runs in the last three innings. Cody Bellinger, Austin Wells, Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Volpe hit solo homers for the Yankees, who wasted 2-0 and 3-2 leads in dropping a season-high 5 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Toronto.
