When will Springboks name team to face Wallabies?
After a couple of days off, the Springboks regrouped on Sunday to begin preparing for the back-to-back Test matches against the Wallabies in Johannesburg on Saturday 16 August and Cape Town on 23 August to start the Rugby Championship. There will be great excitement and anticipation for the first team announcement considering that it will provide some genuine insight into the thinking of Rassie Erasmus after plenty of experimenting with selection during the July internationals. Especially after seeing the Wallabies' competitive performances against the British & Irish Lions, Erasmus will surely be planning to bring a number of first-choice players and combinations into the mix for the first Test against Australia. It's expected that the first Springbok team of the Rugby Championship will be named on Tuesday, 12 August, with the exact time still to be confirmed. A recent training camp featured a series of gym and field training sessions, as well as boardroom sessions, and Erasmus said they will delve deeper into the opposition from this week. 'We have laid a good foundation, and next week we will zone more into what we expect from Australia and start developing plans to counter what we expect from them,' he said. 'They showed against the British & Irish Lions what they are capable of, so we need to be ready mentally and physically for what they will throw at us in South Africa.' The matches against Australia will be followed by successive Tests against the All Blacks in Auckland and Wellington (on 6 and 13 September) and Los Pumas in Durban and London (on 27 September and 4 October). 'We had an intense week of conditioning to get the players ready for what will undoubtedly be a challenging Rugby Championship campaign against some of the top teams in the world,' Erasmus added. 'So we are pleased with the strides made and the mind-shift the players made for what will be a completely different contest against Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina. 'We identified a few key areas of our game that we felt we needed to improve on after the Incoming Series, and we incorporated those areas into our training and conditioning blocks this week. 'The teams we will face in the next few months will ask different questions and pose different challenges, so it was important for the group to align on what to expect in the next few weeks, so this camp was vital in ensuring that we prepare adequately for what lies ahead.' Siraj strikes for India as England's Brook rides his luck in Oval thriller
LONDON - Mohammed Siraj struck again for India before England's Harry Brook counter-attacked in style as a dramatic fifth and deciding Test at the Oval remained in the balance on Sunday. England were 164-3 at lunch on the fourth day, still needing a further 210 runs to reach a huge victory target of 374 that would give them a 3-1 series win. Joe Root, the world's top-ranked Test batsman, was 23 not out, with Yorkshire teammate Brook riding his luck during an unbeaten 38 featuring four fours and two sixes. Brook struck 27 runs in the space of eight balls, having come in with England 106-3 after Siraj had stand-in England captain Ollie Pope lbw for 27. Left-hander Duckett was repeatedly beaten by fast bowler Siraj, who has appeared in every match of a gruelling series. He continued to fend outside off stump and it was no surprise when he fell for 54 after edging an intended drive off Krishna to second slip, with KL Rahul holding a sharp catch to leave England 82-2. But Pope hit three fours in one Krishna over with an on-drive followed by a clip through midwicket and a forceful pull. Siraj, however, had Pope plumb lbw for 27 with a ball that kept a touch low and nipped back. Siraj's 20th wicket of the series made him the leading bowler on either side. India posted 396 in their second innings on Saturday. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made a sparkling 118 and Washington Sundar smashed a quickfire 53 late in the day. History is against the hosts as no side have made more to win in the fourth innings of a Test at the Oval than England's 263 in a one-wicket victory over Australia in 1902. Rampant Bulls humble Sharks in one-sided Currie Cup clash
The Vodacom Bulls ran riot at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, scoring 10 tries to hand the Sharks a crushing 64-0 Currie Cup defeat and claim top spot on the standings. The Bulls delivered a dominant display to dismantle the Sharks in a one-sided Currie Cup clash at Loftus Versfeld. Phiwe Nomlomo's side started strong and never let up. Hooker Juann Else opened the scoring from a powerful lineout maul, before prop Dylan Smith followed with a near-identical try just minutes later. The Bulls were 14-0 up within 10 minutes. The Sharks showed some defensive fight midway through the first half, holding up Jeandre Rudolph over the line, but they couldn't stop the flood for long. Centre Chris Smit scored back-to-back tries to break the game open. Else then grabbed his second from yet another lineout drive, and fullback Boeta Chamberlain nailed his fifth straight conversion to give the Bulls a 35-0 lead at the break. There was no let-up after half-time. Rudolph finally got on the scoreboard two minutes into the second half before winger Stravino Jacobs carved through the defence with a 50-metre sprint for the Bulls' seventh try. Rudolph crossed again soon after to take the score past 50. Replacement Cornel Smit added the ninth try, and debutant JJ Theron wrapped things up late on to complete the 10-try rout. The result sent the Bulls to the top of the Currie Cup log with 10 points from two matches, edging ahead of the Lions on points difference. For the defending champion Sharks, the result was a humbling blow. They failed to fire in any area and now sit bottom of the table after two rounds. Next weekend, the Bulls will look to continue their form against the Pumas at home, while the struggling Sharks host the Cheetahs in Durban.
