R-E-S-P-E-C-T: JJ Spaun gets letter from Jack Nicklaus, congrats from pros as major champ

J.J. Spaun is still adjusting to his admission into a new world after winning the U.S. Open at Oakmont last month. Spaun, 34, described himself as going from 'a mid-tier player fighting for his card' to a 'major winner,' and the way his fellow pros and fans have been treating him has made an impression. 'It's been a complete 180. I've been out here for eight, nine years now, and you see the same guys, but you kind of notice a little bit of change in tone, or I guess more of like respect,' Spaun said on Wednesday during a press conference ahead of the Genesis Scottish Open. 'Especially from the top guys. They engage a little bit more with you. Not that they are different with other players, but you kind of feel you're at a different level now, winning a major.' Among those players who have congratulated Spaun on his career-defining moment? None other than Jack Nicklaus, who wrote him a letter. Funny enough, Spaun had chatted with the Golden Bear at the Memorial, the last tournament Spaun had played before being the only player in the 156-man field to break par at the U.S. Open. Nicklaus, who is the tournament host at Muirfield Village, stopped Spaun and let him know that his good play hadn't gone unnoticed. 'I never really engaged with him before that,' Spaun said, 'and he just said I was playing really well. I said, 'Yeah, it would have been nice to win.' He's like, 'You keep knocking on that door, you're going to knock one down,' and, literally, the next week that happened. He remembered that and sent me a nice note, which was really cool.' Spaun played the following week at the Travelers Championship after his two-shot victory over Robert MacIntyre. After a sluggish start, Spaun closed with 63 to finish T-14. Not that he's complaining but hardly a moment goes by without another person congratulating Spaun, who had only one previous victory since joining the Tour in 2014, on becoming a major winner. 'Everyone wants to come up to you, which is cool, but man, I mean, how does Scottie do it?' he said, referencing world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who has reeled in three majors and 16 titles since February 2023. 'I guess people just get sick and tired of telling him congrats, they just don't tell him after a while.' Spaun continued: 'It feels good to kind of earn that respect from my peers, and obviously the greatest players that are out here kind of acknowledging me and making me feel like I belong, which is huge for confidence and huge for self-belief. 'It's still a pinch-me moment that it's something that I did do. It's very cool, and I'm completely honored to kind of, yeah, earn the respect from the other players and the fans … It's awesome. I'll never get sick of it.' Spaun also has been elevated to one of the featured groupings for the first two rounds and will play alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Scotland's own Connor Syme, at the Genesis Scottish Open. It will be held at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick for the seventh consecutive year. It's a co-sanctioned PGA Tour and DP World Tour event for the fourth year in a row.

Rory vs. Scottie leads our 2025 Genesis Scottish Open prop bet picks, PGA Tour predictions

With the Open Championship on the calendar next week, many of the world's top players are gearing up by playing in the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club this week. The first round begins on Thursday morning in Scotland. Below, we search for the best value prop bets for the Genesis Scottish Open from BetMGM Sportsbook's odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions. Scottie Scheffler (+500) is playing the Scottish Open again for the first time since finishing T-3 in 2023, headlining a loaded field that also features Rory McIlroy (+1000), Xander Schauffele (+2000), Tommy Fleetwood (+2000) and Collin Morikawa (2500). Defending champion and Scotland's own Robert McIntyre (+2500) is also teeing it up, as is another past champion, Aaron Rai (+5500). The Renaissance Club is 7,282 yards long and plays as a par 70. It's a links course that also has some trees scattered around the property, though most holes are fairly open like traditional links courses are. It opened in 2007 and began hosting the Scottish Open in 2019, making this the seventh time the event is being played here. Genesis Scottish Open – Top-5 picks Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 8:47 p.m. ET. McIntyre has finished second and first in his last 2 starts at the Scottish Open, so he's going for 3 top-5s in a row here. And he very easily could've won in 2023 if not for McIlroy's heroics on 18 to snatch the victory from the Scotsman. He's in great form after coming in second at the U.S. Open last month, too. Schauffele won this event in 2022 and proceeded to finish 42nd and 15th in the last 2 years. Obviously, he won the Open Championship last year, too, so he's had plenty of success on links courses in the past. Putting shouldn't be as critical this week at The Renaissance Club, which is an area Schauffele has struggled, but he's been excellent in the all-important approach metric. Fleetwood suffered heartbreak at the Travelers Championship, making bogey on 18 to lose to Keegan Bradley by 1 shot. He's never won on the PGA Tour, but he's consistently near the top of the leaderboard and he's had finishes of fourth and sixth in 2 of his last 3 starts in this event. Genesis Scottish Open – Top-10 picks Morikawa continues to struggle on the greens, but he remains 10th in SG: off the tee and 5th in approach, so the ball-striking numbers are still great. With Billy Foster on the bag as his caddie now, maybe he'll improve on the greens going forward. McIlroy has played this event twice since he became co-sanctioned in 2022, winning in 2023 and finishing T-4 last year. He closed well at the U.S. Open and carried that over into the Travelers Championship where he tied for sixth, so he's gaining some momentum as he regains his focus before next week's Open. Kim has come in third, sixth and 15th in 3 career starts at the Scottish Open, showing a prowess for playing well on links courses. He's in poor form, but maybe getting out of the U.S. and playing in Scotland will help get him back on track. Genesis Scottish Open – Top-20 picks Detry has finished 30th or better in 5 of his last 6 starts at the Scottish Open, with the only exception being a T-42 in 2023. He has a win already this season and should be even more comfortable playing back in Europe. Neergaard-Petersen is playing this event for the first time, but in his last 2 worldwide starts, he came in 12th at the U.S. Open and 14th at the BMW International Open. Having primarily played on the DP World Tour, he's a sleeper this week in Scotland. Harman is a former Open champion and has come in 12th and 21st in his last 2 starts here after missing the cut in 2022. A strong links player, his odds have reached the point where they're worth taking despite a somewhat up-and-down year. WATCH: Get ESPN+ Genesis Scottish Open – Matchups Suggested play is golfer in bold. Xander Schauffele (-125) vs. Ludvig Aberg (+100) Aberg is hard to trust right now with how inconsistent he's been. Schauffele hasn't been his usually steady self this year, but he's got enough experience playing links golf that he should probably be a bigger favorite. Rory McIlroy (+150) vs. Scottie Scheffler (-190) Both McIlroy and Scheffler have good records here, with Scheffler coming in third, 12th and missing the cut once, while McIlroy has a win, a fourth-place finish and an MC, too. It's always dangerous to bet against Scheffler but +150 is too good to pass up with McIlroy. Genesis Scottish Open – Top Asian No one in this market is better than +550 to be the top Asian finisher, so it's essentially a wide-open field. Kim is tied with Byeong Hun An, Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim at +550, making this a toss-up but one worth taking Kim in because of his links history. Genesis Scottish Open – Top French Perez is the favorite to be the top Frenchman and he moved to Scotland so he might have a slight advantage over his competitors in this market. He tied for 10th last year and 35th in 2023, also finishing 14th in 2020. Genesis Scottish Open – First-round leader As of now, it seems the later tee times on Thursday will see less wind, which doesn't bode well for Detry, who's on the earlier side. However, he's shot 66 or better in the opening round in 3 of his last 4 starts at the Scottish Open, putting him T-4 or better each time. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now!
