Mum who claimed she struggled to get out of bath caught out by Facebook posts of her running
A deceitful mum who falsely claimed over £20,000 in benefits while participating in numerous running events has been ordered to repay the money. Sara Morris, 50, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2005 but exaggerated her condition in 2020 to claim Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
The mother of three lied about the severity of her MS, claiming she lacked the strength to stand at the cooker, had balance issues and struggled to get out of the bath without help. She also claimed that leaving the house caused her such anxiety that even a trip to the pharmacy to collect her medication would reduce her to tears.
Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard that she received £2,292.63 in PIP each month. However, she failed to inform the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) that she was an active member of the Stone Master Marathoners and regularly participated in 5km and 10km races.
Her dishonesty was exposed by her own Facebook posts documenting her running activities.
Morris, from Walton Way, Stone, was overpaid £20,528.83 between October 20, 2020 and April 25, 2023. She admitted to dishonestly making a false statement to obtain a benefit and was sentenced to eight months in prison last July, reports Stoke on Trent Live.
Now she has reappeared at the same court for a Proceeds of Crime hearing. Judge Graeme Smith was told Morris benefited from her criminality by £22,386.02 and the available amount was £60,000. He ordered Morris to repay £22,386.02 within 28 days or serve nine months in prison in default.
The court heard investigators carried out surveillance on Morris from February 5 to February 20, 2023. Prosecutor Regan Walters said: "On February 5 she took part in a five-mile race and was seen running without assistance and showed no signs of balance problems. On February 11 she was seen running with the Stone Master Marathoners and showed no signs of discomfort."
The investigation uncovered that Morris competed in 73 races between May 2019 and December 2022.
The defendant was interviewed on May 11, 2023 and she stated her MS had worsened and she was suffering from fatigue. But she confirmed she had been a member of Stone Master Marathoners running club prior to making her claim. She added she filled in her PIP form on her worst day.
Paul Cliff, mitigating, said Morris was diagnosed with MS 19 years ago and the 'severity of its impact ebbs and flows to a degree'. Mr Cliff said: "But it is accepted by her that the application did not give the full picture. It crossed over into the realms of dishonesty."
He said Morris's marriage broke down in the spring of 2020. He said Morris did not enjoy a lavish lifestyle as a result of her fraudulent claim. Mr Cliff said: "She lost her home because of financial problems and was struggling to keep her head above water financially.
"The application did not give the full picture. She did say running was one of the ways she tried to manage her MS. She has found it difficult to come to terms with her dishonesty."
Morris must also pay a £187 surcharge.

Tragedy as fourth body in three days found by bottom of cliffs at popular beauty spot
A FOURTH body has been found by the bottom of a beauty spot cliff in just three days. North Yorkshire Police's coastal team said the woman's body was found at Sandsend, near Whitby. 1 The force added that the woman was aged and in her 50s and from the local area. She was spotted at 11.01am by a passerby who called emergency services. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner. The victim's family are being supported by specialist officers. It comes after cops yesterday launched an investigation into the sudden death of a woman in her 60s at a popular seaside beauty spot on July 31. While a day before, a man and a woman, both understood to be in their 40s, died after falling from the cliffs at Whitby. Her body was found below cliffs at Whitby Abbey in North Yorks., yesterday - hours after a couple allegedly leapt to their deaths in the same area. Her death comes after a man and a woman, both understood to be in their 40s, died after falling from the cliffs at Whitby on July 30, as well as another woman, aged in her 60s, who was found by the cliffs near the pavillion on July 31. The latter two victims reportedly chatted to fellow walkers before allegedly leaping to their deaths hand-in-hand from the same cliffs. Their bodies were recovered from the rocks below the drop on Wednesday evening following the apparent suicide pact. Police are not linking this latest death to the alleged double suicide, which North Yorkshire Police continue to investigate. Brian Vickers, 63, who was attending a nearby steam rally, said: 'I saw the helicopter hovering and came down to see what was going on. 'I was told from somebody who has been walking along the path that he had come across them shortly before and they did not appear to be in distress. 'It was as if they were just going for a walk, there was nothing strange about it. 'About a dozen people witnessed it. They turned to face the sea and held hands and jumped." A member of the public alerted the police at 7.16pm on Wednesday after spotting a man and woman on the rocks below.

Woman in her 60s is found dead at beauty spot where couple fell to their deaths the day before
A woman in her 60s has been found dead at the same seaside beauty spot where a couple fell to their deaths the day before. Her body was discovered below the cliffs at Whitby Abbey by a member of the public at 12.53pm on Thursday, July 31. The day before, a couple, believed to be aged in their 40s, were seen heading towards the cliffs on a path on the North Yorkshire coast. Their bodies were recovered from the rocks below the 180ft cliffs on Wednesday evening following the apparent suicide pact. Police, ambulance, coastguard, mountain rescue and lifeboat teams were called after reports of the the third death, which is believed to have involved a fall from the cliff. Due to the rocky location and high tide, mountain rescue assisted in recovering the woman's body to the lifeboat before being taken to the lifeboat house. North Yorkshire Police are not linking this latest death, which is not believed to be suspicious, to the alleged double suicide, which the force continue to investigate. The area beside the historic 7th-century Abbey, which sits on the clifftop over the historic fishing port of Whitby, has been busy with people setting up for a vintage steam engine rally. The area beside the historic 7th-century Abbey, which sits on the clifftop over the historic fishing port of Whitby, has been busy with people setting up for a vintage steam engine rally A security guard at the steam rally, commenting on the earlier tragedy, said: 'The place was full of police and emergency vehicles trying to recover the bodies. 'They had to be winched up by the coastguard helicopter one at a time because the tide was fast coming in. 'It's heartbreaking.' The couple had been strolling along the cliff too path and had greeted fellow walkers before sneaking through a gap in a safety fence. Shocked witnesses recalled seeing the pair stride up to the cliff edge, before falling to their deaths. They then claim to have seen them turn to face the sea before jumping off and falling to their deaths. A member of the public alerted the police at 7.16pm after spotting a man and woman on the rocks below. The coastguard scrambled to recover their bodies while the tide was rapidly coming in, as mountain rescue teams went down the cliff on ropes to get to them. Their bodies were airlifted from the cliffs at 8.24pm before they were taken to hospital by paramedics. Brian Vickers, 63, was camping on the cliff nearby when 'all hell broke loose'. 'Police, ambulances, and mountain rescue and coastguard helicopters were on the scene very quickly,' he said. 'The helicopter was here around 8pm on Wednesday night. The path leading to the cliff was extremely busy with walkers and dog walkers. 'I was told the couple who died were walking along the path. Another couple were coming the other way. 'The next thing we know is they jumped. It was absolutely horrific to see. The poor souls did not stand a chance. They fell straight onto the rocks below. 'The coastguard helicopter arrived in an hour and we witnessed the horrific scene of them being winched from the beach to waiting ambulances on the cliff top. 'The police told me they were searching for their car nearby but had not found it yet. The whole thing was over and everyone had gone by 11pm.' Another rally attendee said: 'People were saying that the couple had been saying "hello" to walkers, as you do, and looked to be enjoying a nice evening walk before they jumped off. 'It is dreadfully sad. But it seems to have been a deliberate act, not an accident.' For confidential support, call Samaritans on 116 123, visit or visit
