Surge in wealthy using insurance to beat inheritance tax hit
Wealthy families are using life insurance policies to beat Rachel Reeves's inheritance tax raids. Brokers and financial advisers have told The Times that they have seen enquiries about life insurance policies for inheritance tax purposes more than double since the chancellor announced a wave of reforms to the system in October. Life insurance is expensive but it will pay out a lump sum on death and the policy can be put in trust, so it's outside the estate for inheritance tax (IHT) purposes, and can be set up to automatically pay off any IHT bills. Edward Durell from the life insurance specialist Cover Direct said: 'We have seen a huge increase in the number of people asking in the last few about using life insurance policies as cost effective way to mitigate IHT, I would say these are up by about 100 per cent. 'There are a lot of positives to these policies as it will immediately pay out and cover that IHT bill, meaning there is no need to sell property, or get into difficulties paying it.' In her first budget in October, the chancellor announced changes to agricultural property relief and business property relief systems so estates or companies would now have to pay 20 per cent inheritance tax on assets above £1 million from April 2026. Previously these businesses had been exempt from any inheritance tax regardless of the size of their estate. Mike Strutt from Risk Assured, another life insurer, said these changes had resulted in a doubling of the number of enquiries it had seen from customers looking to take out lifetime insurance policies to help soften expensive bills for relatives. Strutt, whose company specialises in providing policies for inheritance tax purposes, said because the legislation had not been published yet, many of those had not yet signed up to these policies. 'Most people won't put that cover in place yet but we are encouraging people to get their ducks in a row so they are ready to roll when they do. We expect there to be a big wave of people taking out policies when the IHT changes come in,' he said. The increase in inquiries is largely driven by those looking to take out whole life policies, or life assurance, which sees people pay a monthly premium that will pay out a lump sum on death, regardless of what age you die at. • Why a wealth tax won't work The insurance broker LifeSearch said that sales of whole life cover had increased 230 per cent since last autumn, while other companies have reported similar increases in those taking up Chris Etherington from tax specialist RSM said that life insurance policies were particular for businesses and farms who would have most of their estate tied up in illiquid assets like property or farms, which can take some time to sell after death. 'A lot of people are thinking, as long as the premiums aren't too excessive, they should probably take out a life insurance policy to meet these inheritance tax bills,' he said. He added that many people that were not business owners and farmers were also now looking to see if they could be used to help cover any liabilities those inheriting their estate may incur from unused pension pots. As part of her IHT reforms, Reeves also announced that from April 2027 unused defined contribution pension pots would also become subject to inheritance tax. 'More and more people are looking at their pension pots and wondering whether to withdraw, but then decide to take out life insurance to cover the potential bill,' Etherington said. • Inheritance tax on pensions could destroy thousands of family businesses There are three types of insurance that can cover inheritance tax liability: whole of life policies; 'gift inter vivos' policies, covering specific gifts rather than someone's entire estate; and term insurance covering set periods, often ten or 20 years, or until the age of 90. Sean McCann from insurer NFU Mutual said they had more business owners looking at gift inter vivos policies to protect gifts to loved ones from tax bills. These policies last for seven years after you give an asset to someone (after which it would fall out of your estate for IHT purposes anyway), and will payout to cover the bill if you die before the end of the policy term. McCann said: 'We are seeing more people giving away assets and they'll often take these seven-year policies, including one owner of a £5-million business who wanted to hand over shares in it to his children.'

America's top banker reveals Wall Street's hottest new trend that could spell financial doom - as he goes all in
America's top banker is pouring $50billion into a private lending phenomenon taking Wall Street by storm, despite acute concerns it could spark a market meltdown. JPMorgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon is spearheading a pivot for his institution, even as he voices fears about the boom in unregulated, private lending. Speaking to clients in Miami in February, Dimon compared the practice to the subprime mortgage fad which sparked the 2008 global financial crisis and laid waste to millions of American's livelihoods and sparked tough regulations in banking. Citing the mistakes bankers made which led to 'everything' blowing up in 2008, Dimon, who is considered the most successful banker in generations, said: 'Parts of direct lending are good, but not everyone does a great job. 'That's what causes problems with financial products.' Banks issued high-risk home loans to borrowers with poor credit histories, and when the initial low interest rates finally spiked, borrowers found themselves unable to pay their mortgages, triggering the collapse of the US housing market. These loans sparked a global credit crisis which ravaged the economy, wiping out trillions of dollars of household wealth and driving unemployment to record highs. Dimon warned the private lending trend - now worth a whopping $700billion - is a similar craze and there 'could be hell to pay' if the market ultimately falters. These loans are generally so risky that traditional banks would not approve, but highly indebted companies are seeking them out from privatized financial firms, the Wall Street Journal reported. They took hold in 2015, as private equity giants with money to spare from successful pension funds sought higher returns and began dabbling in corporate lending. Suddenly, businesses had the means to circumvent the big banks tough regulations, promised loans without the need to secure a credit rating and with more flexible terms. They could borrow more than banks would traditionally lend, and in exchange would have a higher interest rate, with payments tacked on to the back of the loan. According to the Federal Reserve's data from 2024, companies that went down the private loan route paid between two to three percent more than with traditional banks. Defaults have historically remained low, but economists fear this could change swiftly in a sustained recession or market downturn. As early as 2021, Dimon was warning shareholders that the entire scheme ' looked like a bubble' and would need to be 'assiduously monitored.' But he was also looking for the safest way to tap into the market. On the same day Dimon raised the alarm with clients about the risks, JPMorgan released a statement confirming it was increasing its 'direct lending commitment to $50 billion.' 'This strategic move is designed to extend the firm's direct lending capabilities and provide tailored private credit solutions to meet the evolving needs of clients,' the firm said. Under the new plan, corporate clients have the option to either take on a traditional loan or a private lending option, which could grant them access to more cash but see them saddled with a higher interest rate. 'Since 2021, J.P. Morgan has successfully deployed over $10 billion across more than 100 private credit transactions, serving both corporate and sponsor clients,' JPMorgan said in a February statement. 'This latest commitment underscores the bank's dedication to being a leader in both the broadly syndicated and private credit markets.' JPMorgan holds onto private loans and collects interest until it matures. Dimon has considered the risk and sees a path forward for JPMorgan to profit even if a crisis destroys the market. During the global financial crisis, a handful of bankers who predicted the crash were able to hugely profit by by betting against the very mortgage investments they sold to clients, making money as those investments ultimately collapsed. The crash happened when millions of Americans began to default on risky home loans, causing the value of those investments to plummet and triggering panic across the global financial system. Glenn Schorr, a senior analyst for Evercore, said: 'As a bank, you can only watch private credit come from nowhere and get to a trillion dollar industry for so long. 'This is what its clients are asking for.'

Britain looks like Greece just before the debt crisis
Where is the next Greece, a country that will spark a global financial crisis? Over the last 15 years there have been plenty of different potential candidates. Turkey, perhaps, with its out-of-control inflation. Or France, with its huge budget deficits and rioters who block any reforms. Or even the United States, with an erratic president at war with the central bank. You could make a plausible case for worrying about any of them. And yet, over the last week it has become painfully clear that the next Greece is Britain – and the warning signs are already in place. A decade and a half has now passed since Greece sparked the first great euro debt crisis. It is enough time for most of us to have largely forgotten the details, but at the time it posed a systemic risk to the global economy. Its debts had spiralled out of control, the Government had run out of money and banks across the eurozone, and especially in France and Germany, were on the brink of collapse if all the Greek bonds they owned turned out to be worthless. It quickly spread to Ireland, Portugal and Italy and threatened to bring those countries down as well. In the end, the European Union stepped in with a bailout, the European Central Bank provided a backstop and the crisis eventually blew over. Greece started to make painful cuts to public spending and stoically endured a deep recession. But it was a very close-run thing. On Friday, we learnt that UK GDP fell by 0.1pc last month, even though most economists had forecast a modest rise. We should not put too much faith in the monthly output statistics.
