Taliworks Delivers Strong 1Q Performance With 12.8% Revenue Growth
The group posted a profit after tax of RM12.9 million, on the back of RM105.3 million in revenue, marking a 12.8% year-on-year (YoY) increase.
The rise was largely attributed to the sustained construction progress on Phase 1, Packages 2 and 3 of the Sungai Rasau Water Supply Scheme, which drove construction segment revenue from RM11.8 million in 1Q24 to RM27.9 million in the current quarter.
Revenue from the group's renewable energy (RE) segment climbed 13.6% YoY to RM7.5 million, fuelled by an 11.4% increase in solar energy output following the replacement of solar panels across all its photovoltaic plants. This reflects the group's growing momentum in clean energy, positioning it as a future growth pillar.
'Our water treatment, supply, and toll highway operations remain the bedrock of our performance,' said Executive Director Kevin Chin. 'However, we're pleased with the continued traction in our renewable energy business and the contribution from construction, both of which align with our strategy to diversify and scale high-impact infrastructure investments.'
Chin added that Taliworks remains focused on expanding its infrastructure and RE footprint while maintaining cost discipline across all segments.
'To support long-term growth, we are actively seeking new opportunities to expand our construction order book and optimise operational efficiency,' Chin noted.
In line with its commitment to shareholder returns, Taliworks declared a first interim single-tier dividend of 0.5 sen per share, amounting to RM10.08 million, payable on June 30, 2025.
Based on the closing price of RM0.68 on May 19, 2025, the trailing 12-month dividend yield stands at an attractive 5.9%. Related

AI chip trade permit ensures Malaysia's compliance, credibility
KUALA LUMPUR: The trade permit imposed for United States (US) origin high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) chips reaffirms Malaysia's commitment as a trusted hub for managing advanced technology exports, transshipments, and transits. In stating this, Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA) president Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai said the measure sent a strong signal of Malaysia's seriousness in complying with international trade obligations, including the US export controls. 'The trade permit makes it clear that the government will not tolerate any abuse of exports, transshipment, or illicit trading,' Wong told Bernama when asked to comment on the current measures announced by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) on Monday. Wong added that many Malaysian firms have already taken proactive steps, including internal audits, to ensure they adhere to local and global regulations. 'We in Malaysia, both the private sector and government, take this very seriously. We want to make sure everything is fully compliant,' he added. However, Wong said there is a need for greater clarity from the government on specific reporting obligations under the strategic trade permit. 'We need to know what needs to be reported and what constitutes notification to authorities. Once this is clear, companies can incorporate any additional steps needed to meet compliance,' he said. MITI on Monday announced that, effective immediately, all exports, transshipments, and transits of US-origin high-performance AI chips would be subject to a Strategic Trade Permit under Section 12 of the Strategic Trade Act 2010 (STA 2010), also known as the Catch-All Control provision. Under the provision, individuals or companies are required to notify authorities at least 30 days in advance if they intend to export, transship, or transit any unlisted item that may be suspected of being misused or involved in restricted activities. Meanwhile, Pacific Research Center of Malaysia principal adviser Oh Ei Sun said the move would not affect local data centre or AI development projects, as it pertains primarily to the transshipment or export of US-made chips, not their import into Malaysia for domestic use. 'I would not say Malaysia's industry lacked transparency before this. But the US is now taking this issue very seriously, and we are acting accordingly because we value our overall relationship with the US,' he said. - Bernama

Weaker industrial output weighs on growth
PETALING JAYA: The latest industrial production index (IPI) data tracking manufacturing, mining and electricity output released last week shows that the Malaysian economy is on course for slower growth, as external challenges centring around trade and geopolitics continue to weigh on industrial activities. The IPI registered a slight growth of 0.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) in May after a 2.7% expansion in April, which was below market expectations for an increase of 2.1% y-o-y, with analysts projecting moderate growth this year against a backdrop of global trade uncertainty and early indications of improvements in manufacturing-sector conditions. TA Research said the latest IPI data points to a likely moderation in overall economic growth for the second quarter of 2025 (2Q25) despite the manufacturing sector remaining a key driver of gross domestic product expansion, supported by domestic demand and front-loading activity to get ahead of tariffs. The data remained mixed, as manufacturing output, which grew an average 4.2% y-o-y in the April-to-May period, suggested sustained underlying momentum while the manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI), which tracks the sector's market sentiment, improved to 49.3 in June from 48.8 in May. A reading below 50 signals a contraction. The research house believes the manufacturing PMI reading, the highest since late 2022, signals a gradual improvement in business sentiment despite the index remaining in contraction territory. Malaysia's manufacturing PMI has been in continuous contraction since last June. It maintained IPI growth of 2% y-o-y compared with the 3.7% expansion last year. 'Looking ahead, industrial activity is expected to remain highly sensitive to global trade dynamics, domestic demand conditions, and fluctuations in energy prices, particularly amid ongoing uncertainty over US trade policy. 'Ongoing trade tensions, particularly those involving the United States, pose notable downside risks for Malaysia's export-oriented industries by disrupting supply chain continuity and undermining export competitiveness,' it added. BIMB Research, which retained an IPI growth forecast of 2.9%, pointed to elevated risks for export-heavy categories such as electrical and electronics products, raw materials, and machinery, with the Aug 1 US tariff deadline and the possible expiry of China-related tariff suspensions on Aug 12 as key turning points.
