Malaysia Airlines – confident on tourism growth, mindful of headwinds

The Sun05-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines is confident on the continued recovery of tourism in 2025 and beyond, supported by stronger consumer confidence, greater mobility and improved economic conditions.
However, the airline remains cautious, as rising tariffs, inflationary trends and global supply chain disruptions are expected to exert ongoing pressure on its operational costs.
Malaysia Aviation Group chief commercial officer of airlines Dersenish Aresandiran said as a premium carrier, Malaysia Airlines is focused on delivering a compelling product offering that supports long-term growth.
This includes ongoing fleet modernisation, enhanced passenger comfort and an overall improved travel experience.
'We are committed to ensuring network accessibility, offering flexible fare options and strengthening customer engagement through our Enrich loyalty programme and lifestyle integrations,' he told SunBiz.
Dersenish said enhancing partnerships with government stakeholders to boost incentives for domestic travel, particularly during peak travel periods, remains a critical strategy.
He noted that as the national carrier, Malaysia Airlines is working closely with Tourism Malaysia in supporting the goals of Visit Malaysia 2026 in strengthening air connectivity across the country and enriching the domestic tourism landscape.
'In tandem, we are actively working with state tourism bodies, including Sarawak Tourism Board, to support events such as the Rainforest World Music Festival, and Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) to continue positioning Langkawi as a top-tier domestic destination. These collaborations reinforce our commitment to growing Malaysia's domestic tourism ecosystem and supporting regional economic development,' he said.
Malaysia Airlines has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) to put in place promotional activities.
'Building on past festive season initiatives that boosted travel through subsidies, promotions and targeted discounts, there is strong potential to formalise and expand these partnerships.
'By working closely with tourism boards, regional governments and related ministries, new incentive schemes such as travel vouchers, accommodation subsidies and special fare promotions can be developed.
'These initiatives would not only stimulate higher domestic travel demand during high-traffic periods but also support broader national tourism recovery goals, promote regional economic activity, and strengthen public-private sector cooperation in the travel and aviation industries,' Dersenish said.
The airline has seen increased domestic airport arrivals (+6.1%), validating the importance of maintaining and optimising intra-Malaysia routes.
Among the destinations that recorded significant year-on-year increases in passenger load factors from Kuala Lumpur are Bintulu (+11%), Langkawi Tawau, and Sandakan (+9%), Miri and Penang (+8%), Alor Setar, Kota Bharu, Kuantan, and Sibu (+7%), Kuching, Kuala Terengganu and Labuan (+6%), and Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu (+4%).
Meanwhile, sister airline Firefly saw its domestic passenger load factors increase by more than 6% in 2024 versus 2023, driven by key routes such as from Subang to Penang and Johor Bahru.
In terms of increased capacity, the top domestic routes that saw an increase in available seat kilometres (ASK) year-on-year are Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu (+19%) and Johor Bahru (+10%) by Malaysia Airlines, and from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau (+77%) and from Kuching to Tawau (+33%) by Firefly, respectively.
Dersenish said Malaysia Airlines has strengthened its network connectivity, particularly to high-demand coastal and beach destinations, reflecting the growing interest in these routes.
In addition, the airline has ramped up its marketing efforts to promote domestic tourism through the 'Bonus Side Trip' programme which includes seven key destinations: Alor Setar, Langkawi, Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan and Penang.
This initiative supports Malaysia's economic growth while contributing to the broader ambitions of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Touching on fleet modernisation and expansion, Dersenish said Malaysia Airlines' commitment to modernise its fleet is underscored by the recent orders for the Boeing 737-8 and 737-10 aircraft under the second phase of its narrow-body replacement programme.
He added that this investment will enhance fuel efficiency, reliability and the overall passenger experience.
'The 737-8, which has been in service with Malaysia Airlines since 2023, marks the beginning of our narrow-body fleet renewal. Additionally, we are upgrading some key domestic flights, including services to East Malaysia, by introducing wide-body Airbus A330 aircraft during peak times to increase capacity and enhance cargo capabilities,' Dersenish said.
Malaysia Airlines remains committed to supporting national connectivity and affordability.
During major festive seasons, Dersenish said, the government deploys subsidised fixed-fare promotions to ensure travel remains accessible to all Malaysians.
'Meanwhile, we are enhancing Firefly's connectivity from Subang with over 2,100 weekly flights to eight destinations, including Kota Kinabalu and Kuching,' he added.

Pavilion-REIT forecast to continue solid showing

HLIB Research said the outlook for Pavilion-REIT for financial year 2025 remains positive. PETALING JAYA: Analysts expect stronger earnings for Pavilion Real Estate Investment Trust 's (Pavilion-REIT) in the second half of this year (2H25) as the group's growth continues to gain momentum. The group reported its second quarter of financial year 2025 (2Q25) core net profit of RM78.7mil earlier this week, down 13% quarter-on-quarter and up 17.2% year-on-year, bringing 1H25's total to RM169.1mil, which was in line with most consensus expectations. Hong Leong Investment Bank Research (HLIB Research) said in a report the outlook for Pavilion-REIT for financial year 2025 (FY25) remains positive, underpinned by sustained tourism-driven footfall at key malls such as Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Pavilion Elite, which contributed about 67% of 1H25 revenue. 'This, along with management's low to mid-single-digit rental revision guidance, supports our view of a resilient FY25 performance,' it added. HLIB Research noted that Pavilion-REIT's management had observed a notable increase in tourist footfall at Pavilion KL and Pavilion Elite over the past two to three weeks. 'This aligns with our 2H25 outlook, where we expect sustained high footfall at these prime malls supported by Visit Malaysia 2026 initiatives and the mutual visa exemption between Malaysia and China,' the research house said. HLIB Research, which maintained a 'buy' call on the stock with an unchanged target price of RM1.77, said it remains positive on the REIT, underpinned by a favourable tourism outlook, which is expected to boost footfall and spending in key assets like Pavilion KL and Pavilion Elite, reinforcing its growth momentum. CGS International Research (CGSI Research) said it continues to see Pavilion-REIT as a proxy for growing private consumption, an uptick in tourism and accelerated earnings expansion from Pavilion Bukit Jalil (PBJ). The research house said the group is expected to post higher 2H25 earnings backed improving occupancy and earnings from PBJ, incremental contributions from the newly acquired Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur hotel and Pavilion Hotel Kuala Lumpur as well interest savings following the overnight policy rate cut on July 9. On key takeaways from Pavilion-REIT's 2Q25 briefing earlier this week, CGSI Research said management highlighted that PBJ's valuation has been maintained at RM2.2bil following a recent revaluation exercise by consultants Knight Frank and KPMG. Therefore, the outstanding acquisition consideration remains unchanged at RM400mil (with RM1.8bil already paid), which is due next month. 'We believe this could lead to a modest increase in gearing, as it draws down additional debt to fund the remaining consideration,' the research house said. CGSI Research reiterated an 'add' call on the REIT with a target price of RM1.79 per share. RHB Research, meanwhile, kept a 'buy' call with a new target price of RM2 per share. It said Pavilion-REIT's 1H25 results were in line with expectations and supported by the solid performance of PBJ. According to the research house, Pavilion REIT's stands to benefit from its robust asset quality, the recovery in tourism, and exposure to floating-rate debt (88%), which makes it a beneficiary of recent interest rate cuts. On the REIT's outlook, RHB Research said it expects 3Q25 retail sales to remain soft, due to the absence of festival-related spending, before picking up in the seasonally stronger 4Q25.

Muted 2Q earnings likely

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's upcoming second-quarter of financial year 2025 (2Q25) earnings season is expected to be relatively muted, with overall corporate performance continuing to reflect challenges from external uncertainties, particularly the ongoing US-Malaysia tariff negotiations. While earnings growth may remain soft, the reporting cycle begins against a backdrop of stabilising macroeconomic indicators and fewer forecast revisions compared to the previous quarter. As such, Maybank Investment Bank Research (Maybank IB) believes the worst of the earnings downgrades may now be behind. 'The 2Q25 results season may yet be another unexciting one but at least one with fewer earnings downgrades in our view,' the research house said in its latest strategy note. Maybank IB has forecast a modest 2.5% earnings growth for the FBM KLCI in 2025, primarily weighed down by the banking sector. It anticipates a stronger rebound in 2026 with a projected growth of 7.7%. The research house's base case target for the FBM KLCI stands at 1,660, pegged to 14.4 times 2026 estimated price-to-earnings ratio (PER), representing minus 0.5 standard deviation of the 10-year mean, amid continued market volatility and uncertainty over trade policy. 'Our base case assumes further de-escalation in trade tensions and favourable outcome from tariff negotiations,' the report noted. Conversely, in a bearish scenario where earnings growth moderates to 5%, the index could dip to 1,450 based on 13 times PER. Despite a softer external environment, Malaysia's domestic economic fundamentals appear encouraging. The research house points to robust consumer activity, a sustained investment cycle, and signs of resilient private demand as cushioning the impact of weaker exports, particularly in May and June. 'The 2Q25 real gross domestic product growth advanced estimate of 4.5% year-on-year, with a rebound quarter-on-quarter from 4.4% in 1Q25, suggests a steady growth momentum and indicates external headwinds due to US tariffs are being mitigated by domestic tailwinds,' it said. Inflation has also cooled to 1.1% in June, while the labour market remains firm with the unemployment rate steady at 3%. Maybank IB attributed rising disposable incomes – fuelled by civil servant pay hikes, minimum wage increases, and a surge in Employee Provident Fund contributions – as supportive of its positive stance on the consumer, real estate investment trusts (REITs), and construction sectors. Sector-wise, consumer, construction, healthcare, REITs, and renewable energy remain Maybank IB's key 'overweights', with minimal changes to its top stock picks apart from Solarvest Holdings Bhd , which has outpaced its target price. 'We expect some positive momentum for construction, healthcare, property and, more selectively, the oil and gas and utilities sectors,' the research house added. The technology sector may face near-term weakness, but Maybank IB noted that most of the necessary earnings downgrades have already been made. 'From our channel checks, we expect most sectors are likely to deliver flattish earnings with few surprises,' it said. Notably, while plantation firms may post weaker quarterly numbers due to lower crude palm oil prices, some could benefit from disposal gains and foreign exchange tailwinds. The recent 25 basis points cut to the overnight policy rate, announced in July, is expected to have a limited impact on second-quarter bank earnings. 'We had already factored this rate cut into our bank forecasts; we stay 'neutral' on banks,' Maybank IB stated.

E-hailing firms Maxim, inDrive granted 3-month probation

In May, Apad revoked inDrive Malaysia's operating licence after it reportedly failed to comply with regulations introduced by the agency in 2019. (inDrive pic) PETALING JAYA : Russian-founded e-hailing firms inDrive and Maxim have been placed under a three-month probation period after successfully appealing the revocation of their operating licences. The Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) said the two companies were ordered to take corrective measures to continue operating, particularly regarding e-hailing vehicle permits (EVPs). 'To meet this condition, Maxim and inDrive have improved their registration system to ensure all of their drivers have valid EVPs before they can start operating. 'Both companies have also given Apad 'view only' access to their data to make it easier to cross-check their data on EVPs,' it said in a statement. Apad said it conducted a random check on their drivers on July 11 and found that everything was in compliance. The agency and the road transport department had found the improvements made by the companies satisfactory, and agreed to place Maxim and inDrive under a three-month monitoring period, effective tomorrow. 'To ensure the continuous commitment of both operators, their representatives are required to turn up at the Apad headquarters every month throughout the monitoring period. 'These sessions are aimed at allowing Apad to conduct real-time monitoring, with random checks conducted on drivers via the inDrive and Maxim applications,' it said. In May, both firms were ordered to halt operations from July 24 after failing to comply with Apad's regulations introduced in 2019. In September 2022, the road transport department raided inDrive's Malaysian office and discovered that the firm was operating with an expired licence. In 2023, Maxim was also raided by Apad officers for allowing vehicles to operate without a valid permit.
