
French fashion retailers see 2.7% revenue drop during summer sales
'Apart from department stores and budget chains, commercial activity has slumped across all retail channels,' said IFM. Of the businesses surveyed by IFM, 57.7% said footfall was down compared to last year's four-week summer sales period.
In H1 2025, items purchased at a discount (end-of-season sales, event sales, promotions, etc.) accounted for a 34% share of the value of all fashion purchases by French consumers.
In the first six months of 2025, the revenue generated by textile and apparel retailers in France was 0.1% down compared to H1 2024. In terms of the IFM forecasts published in February, 'the market has deviated slightly from our relatively optimistic median scenario, which expected a 0.2% increase in apparel and textiles consumption in 2025.'
In H1 2025, the top three apparel retailers in France were second-hand site Vinted followed by budget chain Kiabi and Amazon. Chinese e-tailer Temu made the top 15 for the first time, just behind Zara.

Lyft and Baidu to launch robotaxis in Europe next year
American rideshare company Lyft said it is partnering with Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) firm Baidu to bring robotaxis to Europe next year. The partnership will see Baidu's sixth-generation Apollo Go autonomous vehicles (AVs) available for rides on the Lyft app in Germany and the United Kingdom 'pending regulatory approval,' Lyft said Monday in a press release. Baidu plans to scale up its fleet to 'thousands of vehicles' throughout Europe in the coming years, it said in a post on the social media platform X. The announcement comes days after Lyft announced it had acquired the taxi app FREENOW from BMW and Mercedes Benz for approximately $200 million (€172.8 million), expanding its operations to 180 cities across nine countries in Europe. Lyft, which has had very little presence in Europe so far, said it will prioritise Germany and the UK due in part to FREENOW's existing presence in these countries as well as their 'deep relationships with local regulators and taxi operators'. For Baidu, it's the latest in a series of partnerships to expand its reach outside China. Last month, Baidu partnered with Uber to bring its autonomous cars to markets outside of the United States and China, focusing specifically on the Middle East in cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi as well as Asia. 'Buckle up! Your driverless ride is on its way,' Baidu said Monday.

Kering in talks with Qatar for sale of Milan building, Corriere says
Gucci -owner Kering is in talks with a member of the Qatari royal family for the sale of a building in Milan's top shopping avenue, Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday. The deal could help the French luxury group cut its debt, which ballooned to more than 10 billion euros (11.58 billion dollars) in 2024, following a series of expensive acquisitions. Among them was the 18th century property in Via Montenapoleone, which the French group bought from Blackstone for 1.3 billion euros in April last year. Corriere said Kering was looking at selling a majority stake in the company through which it owns the building, based on a "similar valuation". It added that the buyer would be a vehicle linked to former Qatari Prime Minister and real estate billionaire Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani. Kering declined to comment on the report. It was not immediately possible to contact Al-Thani for a comment. In April, when Corriere first reported about a possible Qatari-Kering deal for the Via Montenapoleone property, the Qatar Investment Authority denied it had any interest. Kering, which appointed former Renault CEO Luca de Meo to lead the group from September, is under pressure to trim debt and revive declining sales, particularly at its top brand Gucci.

Italy competition authority fines China's Shein 1 million euros
Italy's competition authority (AGCM) on Monday announced a 1-million-euro ($1.16 million) fine on Chinese fast fashion online retailer Shein for misleading customers on the environmental impact of its products. The fine was imposed on Infinite Styles Services CO. Limited, a Dublin-based company that operates Shein's website in Europe, at the end of a "greenwashing" investigation that Italian watchdog had opened in September. AGCM said the environmental sustainability and social responsibility claims promoted on Shein's website "were sometimes vague, generic, and/or overly emphatic, and in other cases omitted and misleading." The Italian authority said its assessment was influenced by an "increased duty of care" falling on Shein, "because it operates in (the) highly polluting sector and with highly polluting methods" of fast and super-fast fashion. Reuters has contacted the company for a comment. When the investigation was launched last year, the company said it was "ready to cooperate openly with relevant Italian authorities, providing the necessary support and information to address any inquiries".
