Egypt launches specialized tax units to boost business confidence
The Investor Support Unit aims to simplify procedures and foster a more investment-friendly climate. The Advance Tax Rulings Unit allows taxpayers to request binding, official interpretations of their tax obligations before conducting transactions. Meanwhile, the Tax Complaints Unit will handle taxpayer grievances promptly and professionally.
The announcement came during the Tax Facilitation Package Conference in Damietta, held under the auspices of the Future of the Nation Party and in coordination with the Tax and Customs Committee of the Federation of Egyptian Industries. The event brought together regional tax office leaders, business figures, manufacturers, craftsmen, and representatives from industry chambers.
Abdel Aal highlighted the significant tax system reforms launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Finance and the ETA, including the introduction of electronic tax returns, a core tax system upgrade, e-invoicing, e-receipts, unified wage tax calculations, and improved digital infrastructure integrated with government systems.
'While we've made considerable progress—recognized both locally and internationally—we paused last July to assess our achievements and address challenges,' she said. 'This led to the rollout of the first phase of the Tax Facilitation Package, which aims to create a more just, efficient, and transparent tax framework.'
A cornerstone of this reform is a simplified tax system for businesses with annual revenues up to EGP 20m. Under Ministerial Decree No. 167 of 2025, businesses enrolling by 12 August 2025 will be exempt from past tax liabilities. The new system eliminates complex bookkeeping and returns, calculating income tax as a fixed percentage of turnover and applying uniformly across all sectors.
Businesses exceeding the EGP 20m threshold will transition to the general tax regime but still benefit from initial simplified entry. To enroll, taxpayers must submit Form 1/10 via the ETA website and opt into the system under Law No. 6 of 2025. Participants must also file simplified returns, join the e-invoice and e-receipt systems where applicable, and follow unified wage tax guidelines.
Notably, enrolled businesses will be exempt from tax audits for five years. Additional relief includes quarterly VAT filings and annual payroll tax submissions, reducing administrative burdens. Late payment penalties are also capped at 100% of the original tax due.
Abdel Aal concluded by reiterating the ETA's commitment to building a fair and supportive tax environment that promotes transparency, facilitates compliance, and encourages investment across Egypt.

Egyptian Pound Gains Further as Dollar Falls Below EGP 49
Taarek Refaat The Egyptian pound continued its upward trajectory on Wednesday, with the US dollar falling below the symbolic 49-pound mark across major Egyptian banks for the first time in weeks. The move reflects growing confidence in Egypt's foreign currency flows, buoyed by a dramatic surge in workers' remittances and a narrowing current account deficit. According to the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), the dollar traded at an average of EGP 49.02 for buying and EGP 49.12 for selling in early transactions. The lowest recorded buying rate stood at EGP 48.95, offered by Housing and Development Bank, while the highest selling rate reached EGP 49.32 at Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank. The recent appreciation of the pound, by roughly 20 piasters in just 24 hours, comes on the heels of robust macroeconomic data. Expatriate Egyptians sent home approximately $26.4 billion in the first nine months of fiscal year 2024/25, marking a staggering 82.7% year-on-year increase. Analysts say this inflow has provided a critical cushion for Egypt's foreign reserves and helped stabilize the local currency. At the National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr, two of the country's largest state-owned lenders, the dollar stood at EGP 49.02 for buying and EGP 49.12 for selling. The Commercial International Bank (CIB) mirrored these rates, indicating a broad-based alignment among top institutions. Bank of Alexandria posted a slightly more favorable rate for buyers at EGP 49.00, while the Housing and Development Bank undercut the market further at EGP 48.95. Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank offered the highest rates, with the greenback priced at EGP 49.22 (buying) and EGP 49.32 (selling), likely reflecting stronger demand among its clientele for dollar liquidity. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Silver Hits Record High as Egyptian Silver Pound Surges to EGP 496 for the First Time
Waleed Farouk Silver prices surged significantly on Wednesday, reaching their highest level since September 2011, driven by growing investment demand and improved market sentiment toward precious metals. Local Market Surge In Egypt, the price of 800 purity silver rose by EGP 1 to reach EGP 54 per gram. The 999 purity silver was priced at EGP 67, while the 925 purity silver was priced at EGP 62 per gram. Notably, the 925 silver pound jumped to a record EGP 496 — the highest in its history. Global Rally Globally, the price of silver rose by nearly $1 per ounce to reach $39.37, its highest level in more than 13 years. Since the start of 2025, silver has gained around 37%, making it one of the best-performing assets of the year, as investors seek protection against economic and geopolitical instability. Drivers Behind the Rally Several factors have contributed to silver's ongoing uptrend: Expectations of a Fed rate pause in the upcoming July meeting. Mounting concerns over a global economic slowdown are prompting investors to increase exposure to safe-haven assets. Ongoing supply chain disruptions and growing industrial demand, particularly from the solar energy and tech sectors, continue to support prices amid tightening global supply. Silver Outperforming Gold The silver-to-gold ratio — which measures the relative value of the two metals — fell to 87.16, down from 87.32 on Tuesday, indicating silver's relative outperformance. In Egypt's local market, silver has climbed 32% year-to-date, with 800 purity silver rising by EGP 13 from EGP 41 in January. Globally, the ounce has jumped from $29 to $39.73, delivering stronger returns than most other precious metals over the same period. Positive Outlook Ahead Silver's upward trajectory appears likely to continue, supported by several key developments: U.S. Treasury yields have declined, with the 10-year yield falling to 4.42% and the 2-year yield to 3.87%, increasing the appeal of non-yielding assets like precious metals. Citibank forecasts silver to reach $40 within the next 6 to 12 months and possibly surpass $46 by Q3 2025, driven by robust industrial demand and tightening supply. Silver remains undervalued relative to gold: with the current gold-to-silver ratio at 87.3, a reversion to the historical average of 53 could push silver prices to over $63 per ounce. Significant Upside Potential Historically adjusted data shows that silver's all-time high in 1980 would equal approximately $197 per ounce in today's dollars, while the 2011 rally peaked near $71. Current levels between $38–$39 are still relatively low — signaling considerable room for further appreciation in the near term. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
