Astronauts' 9-month stay in space could help with healthier mission to Mars

As astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams get their land legs back on Earth, the effects of being stranded in space for nine months — and their recovery — will give scientists a chance to improve preparations for eventual, and even longer, space flights, say experts.
NASA aims to send humans to Mars as early as the 2030s; flights which, there and back, could take 21 months.
"The extreme environment of space, the radiation, the lack of gravity, even just those confined spaces, it can really take a toll on our health," said Dr. Farhan Asrar, associate dean of clinical faculty relations at Toronto Metropolitan University's medical school, who researches space medicine.
"Literally I would say pretty much from head to toe it can cause issues."
Without gravity, bodily fluids shift upward, leading to facial swelling and increased pressure in the skull, which can affect vision.
On Earth, the pull of gravity on bones and muscles helps prevent bone and muscle loss. To try to counteract that, astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) exercise for an average of two hours a day.

What's more, the cardiovascular system changes, which can lead to difficulty regulating blood pressure upon return to Earth. Asrar pointed to one Canadian study that suggested carotid arteries of astronauts can age the equivalent of 20 years from just six months in space.
Heart and lungs, the balance mechanism in our ears, and our immune systems are also highly impacted by space flight, says Robert Thirsk, a former astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency and a retired medical doctor,
Thirsk trained at NASA with Williams and says he's looking forward to speaking with her about how to improve training for Mars missions.
He says astronauts will need to be more autonomous on Mars, given that it takes 20 minutes to send a message from there to mission control — too long, for example, if a crewmate's heart suffers an arrhythmia.
"I think health-care delivery is the number one issue that needs to be resolved before we're ready to launch the first crew," Thirsk said on Tuesday.
He says it'll be essential to have a physician on board for the Mars crew, along with AI-enabled diagnostic and monitoring tools.
Despite their extended stay on board the ISS, others have been in space much longer than Wilmore and Williams. The record is held by Valery Polyakov, who was on board Russia's Mir station for 437 days, or more than 14 months, in the mid 1990s.
Back then, Mir had an ultrasound on board to monitor changes to cosmonauts' health. It was about the size of an ABM.
Now, Asrar says, the ultrasound on the ISS is the size of a gaming console.
Similarly, astronauts also use the Canadian Space Agency's Bio-Analyzer, a portable tool that tests their blood, saliva and urine from just a few drops. Wilmore's and Williams's readings from before their trip will be compared with their condition now.
Thirsk says astronauts are made well aware of the impacts of space flight on their abilities, including stress. Self-care, teamwork, cross-cultural skills and the ability to both lead and follow are all important skills for their careers.
"I think the difference between a good astronaut and a great astronaut is mastery of some of these personality traits," he said.

A duo of local students has won a trip abroad to pitch diplomats on their made-in-Manitoba plan to bolster artificial intelligence literacy in Canada and the European Union. The University of Manitoba's Divya Sharma and Emily Katsman were named winners of the 2025 Schuman Challenge last week. 'It's a little bit surreal. I'm still taking it in,' said Katsman, noting the 20-somethings are the first Manitobans to enter the foreign policy competition put on by the EU Delegation to Canada. 'We are a province that has a lot of talent, but we sometimes get overlooked — especially when it comes to these high-level government and political competitions and policy settings.' The national contest calls on undergraduate students to brainstorm ways to strengthen the relationship between their home country and the EU. AI was the theme of this year's event, the third of its kind, which drew a total of 19 submissions from across the country. Sharma, 20, and Katsman, 21, were recognized for their proposal to create a Canada-EU roadmap for AI literacy in post-secondary education. 'By working together, Canada and the EU can create the shared infrastructure, standards, and trust needed to shape an AI-literate generation. One that will fuel future breakthroughs in health, climate, defence, and the digital economy,' they argued in a nine-page essay. 'From classrooms to NATO command centres, students in Canada and the EU must speak the same digital language.' Their recommendations to make that happen? Launch a joint AI literacy taskforce, standardized educator certification initiative and a research and student exchange program. 'AI is the future. There's no turning back,' Sharma said. Katsman echoed those comments. However, despite Canada's reputation as a world leader in AI research excellence, local universities have shied away from embracing the technology in classrooms due to plagiarism concerns, she noted. Their essay deemed this situation 'Canada's AI paradox,' and argued the lack of AI integration on post-secondary campuses is a major issue for the workforce and innovation at large. Canadian students are not being prepared to use AI tools effectively or responsibly — a stark contrast to what's happening in Estonia, they argued. Estonia's 'AI Leap' pilot aims to equip 20,000 high school students in northern Europe with lessons on how to use AI tools. A total of 3,000 teachers in that country are receiving training to leverage the technology for educational purposes this fall. Policymakers are working with Anthropic and OpenAI, alongside other partners, to create a related curriculum and workshops. Sharma and Katsman suggested Canada and the EU learn from Estonia and develop a roadmap accordingly. The U of M students are slated to visit Brussels in the fall to share their ideas with European leaders. Katsman said they are hopeful they will meet Kaja Kallas, who resigned as Estonia's prime minister last year to join the EU government. CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida: In a powerful display of international collaboration, NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully launched a groundbreaking Earth-observation satellite this week, designed to monitor even the most minute shifts in the planet's land and ice surfaces. The US$1.3 billion mission, named NISAR — short for NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar — represents the most ambitious space partnership between the two nations to date. Blasting off from India's Satish Dhawan Space Centre on a barrier island in the Bay of Bengal, the satellite was propelled into a near-polar orbit approximately 464 miles (747 kilometers) above Earth. From this vantage point, NISAR will conduct comprehensive surveys of the planet's terrain every 12 days, using cutting-edge radar technology that functions around the clock, unaffected by clouds, darkness, or dense vegetation. The spacecraft carries dual radar systems — one supplied by NASA, operating in the L-band frequency, and the other from ISRO, operating in the S-band. Together, they will beam microwave signals toward the Earth's surface and analyze the reflections captured by a massive gold-plated wire mesh antenna, unfurled on a 30-foot (9-meter) boom. This antenna, with a diameter of 39 feet (12 meters), will require a whole week to deploy in space. By comparing incoming and outgoing signals, the system can detect ground movements as subtle as one centimeter. "This is a first-of-its-kind, jewel radar satellite that will change the way we study our home planet," said NASA's science mission chief, Nicky Fox, ahead of the launch. "It will help us better anticipate natural disasters before they strike." Among NISAR's top scientific objectives are monitoring melting glaciers and polar ice sheets, tracking groundwater depletion, detecting tectonic shifts that could precede earthquakes or landslides, and observing forest and wetland degradation that contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. The data gathered by NISAR will support not only long-term climate and environmental research but also near-term disaster response. Forecasters, emergency responders, and policymakers around the world will gain critical tools to understand and manage the risks posed by floods, volcanic eruptions, and other natural hazards. "Congratulations, India!" declared India's Minister of Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "This mission will benefit the entire global community." The collaboration underscores the growing strength of the U.S.-India space relationship. NASA contributed $1.2 billion to the mission, covering the L-band radar and the sophisticated antenna system. ISRO's $91 million share included the S-band radar, satellite assembly, and the launch itself. Casey Swails, NASA's deputy associate administrator, traveled to India for the launch and praised the mission as a "pathfinder" for future partnerships. "This launch shows the world what our two nations can achieve together — and it's just the beginning." Once the satellite completes its complex deployment phase, full scientific operations are expected to begin by late October. NISAR will join an expanding constellation of Earth-observing satellites operated by the U.S. and India, solidifying its role as a critical asset in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation.

Air quality alerts were in effect in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, as well as eastern Nebraska and parts of Indiana and Illinois. Forecasters said the smoky skies would remain for much of the day. People with lung disease, heart disease, children, older adults and pregnant women are most susceptible to the poor breathing conditions. Canadian environmental officials said smoke from forest fires that was causing reduced visibility and poor quality would persist into Sunday for some areas. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the red or unhealthy category in a large swath of Minnesota and will likely remain through Saturday. AQI is a system used to communicate how much air pollution is in the air. It breaks pollution down into six categories and colors, and advice on what isn't safe to do. They range from 'good' (the color green) to 'hazardous' (maroon). Story continues below advertisement The smoke could start to decline beginning Saturday before spreading as far south as Tennessee and Missouri. The air could remain unhealthy for sensitive groups through Monday, state health officials said. The EPA's Air Quality Index converts all pollutant levels into a single number. The lower the number, the better. Anything below 50 is classified as 'healthy.' Fifty to 100 is 'moderate' while 100-150 is unhealthy for 'sensitive groups.' Anything above 150 is bad for everyone. Parts of Minnesota exceeded that number on Saturday. Health officials advise people with asthma and other lung disease, heart disease, children and older adults to avoid prolonged exposure to smoke and limit strenuous activities. They said to avoid burning things that could make the air pollution worse, and keep windows and doors closed to keep the smoke from getting inside.
