Senior BNP leader accuses Yunus-led interim govt of partisan bias

Khulna, May 18 (UNI) Senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Salahuddin Ahmed has accused the Interim Government of partisan bias and demanded the removal of two of its advisors due to their alleged affiliations with the National Citizen Party (NCP), the political arm of the powerful student's body Students Against Discrimination.
Addressing a high-energy rally in Khulna on Saturday, Ahmed warned that public patience was wearing thin and that the Mohd Yunus-led interim government risked losing its legitimacy if it failed to uphold neutrality.
Speaking to thousands of supporters, many of them young activists from BNP's affiliate bodies—Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal — Ahmed declared that the interim government, formed in order to restore democracy "had betrayed its mandate by aligning itself with smaller political factions to consolidate power", reports The Daily Star.
'Don't assume we want you to remain in office until the Day of Judgment,' he said, directing his remarks at Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus. 'The people now call this an 'NCP-backed government."
'Two of your advisors are widely known to be affiliated with the NCP. They may not carry official party badges, but the connection is an open secret. If neutrality truly matters, they must resign. And if they refuse, you must remove them.'
(Two advisors, Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, who are the youngest members to be sworn in as advisors to an interim government in Bangladesh, are known to be close to the NCP.)
Tensions between the BNP and the interim government have escalated in recent weeks, with the BNP accusing the administration of overreach and partisan interference. Party insiders claim recent backchannel engagements between NCP figures and senior interim officials have only deepened the mistrust.
Salahuddin Ahmed's comments suggest that what was once merely a slight dent in an otherwise strong alliance, is now becoming more hostile.
In a particularly scathing segment of his speech, Salahuddin criticised the appointment of a foreign national as the government's national security advisor. 'Do you not understand the gravity of giving a foreign citizen access to our military's security reports?' he asked.
'This man is attempting to turn Bangladesh into a strategic battleground, hiding behind the language of humanitarian corridors and the Rohingya crisis.'
He alleged that the appointment had not been discussed with political stakeholders or the public and claimed the advisor had arrogantly dismissed concerns, saying, 'It doesn't matter.'
(He was referring to the appointment of Khalilur Rahman as the National Security Advisor in charge of Rohingya issues. Khalilur Rahman has said he is a Bangladeshi national, and challenged Salahuddin's claim that he is a foreigner.)
The BNP leader said such a post should never be held by a foreign national and called for the adviser's immediate resignation or removal. 'He is sowing instability. We cannot and will not allow this.'
He also condemned the government's apparent move to sign foreign agreements involving the country's strategic ports and transport corridors, arguing that such actions fall well outside the remit of a caretaker administration.
'What authority do you have to strike international deals? Who gave you the mandate to negotiate away our sovereignty? Your only responsibility is to deliver a fair and timely general election.'
With elections expected by December, the BNP is increasingly vocal in its calls for electoral reforms and the restoration of public trust. Salahuddin warned that if the government did not act swiftly and decisively to distance itself from partisan influences, the consequences could be severe.
'If Professor Yunus fails to remove the fascist elements within his government and continues to ignore the will of the people, his exit will not be a dignified one,' he warned.
Other speakers at the rally—including Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna, Swechchhasebak Dal President SM Jilani, and General Secretary Nurul Islam Nayan—echoed the BNP's demands and reaffirmed their commitment to political mobilisation if the demands were not met.
Salahuddin concluded with a warning that the interim government's continued deviation from its original mandate would not go unchallenged. 'Do not underestimate the people's resolve. We were not silent under autocracy, and we will not remain silent now.'

US Senate narrowly advances Trumps' controversial One Big Beautiful Bill Act in a 51-49 turnout

Washington, June 29 (UNI) In a nail-biting vote, the Republican-led U.S. Senate has pushed forward President Donald Trump's huge 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' - a key move towards getting it passed before the upcoming July 4 break. The mammoth 940-page bill scraped through a procedural vote late on Saturday night, 51-49. Two Republicans surprisingly sided with Democrats in opposing the measure, highlighting its divisive nature, reports New York Post. The vote now allows formal debate to kick off on the legislation. The bill aims to make Trump's 2017 tax cuts permanent, boost spending on defence and border security, and cut money for certain welfare programmes. President Trump hailed the outcome on Truth Social, calling it a "GREAT VICTORY." Trump has lobbied for House and Senate Republicans to fast-track the legislation so it lands on his desk by his self-imposed July 4 deadline. The measure would make Trump's 2017 tax cuts permanent, end taxation on tips and overtime, boost border security funding and scrap green-energy tax credits passed during the Biden administration. However, Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer criticised Republicans for rushing the process, demanding the entire bill be read aloud on the Senate floor to ensure proper scrutiny. After the bill is read, lawmakers will have up to 20 hours to debate its contents before a final vote. The House of Representatives already narrowly approved a version of this bill in May. If the Senate passes it, the bill will return to the House for final approval before landing on the President's desk for signing into law. This bill is a cornerstone of Trump's economic agenda, aiming to cement his tax cuts while boosting defence and border spending, often at the expense of social programmes. Its passage would significantly reshape US fiscal policy. UNI ANV SSP

Puri stampede: Odisha Govt orders administrative inquiry

Bhubaneswar, June 29 (UNI) With the tragic death of three devotees and at least fifty others injured in a stampede near Sri Gundicha Temple in Odisha's Puri during Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra during wee hours on Sunday sparking shock waves across the state and exposing the gaping holes in the efficiency of government machinery, Odisha Chief Minister has issued a statement tending apology and ordered an administrative inquiry and suspended two police officers of Superintendent of Police rank. The corrective measures and cracking whips on the officers in the charge of Rath Yatra observance were very much on the cards given the fact the BJP Government in the state was on the line of fire due to the inordinate delay in the pulling of chariots, stampede-like situation and indiscriminate distribution of cordon passes during the nine-day annual festival of Lord Jagannath that commenced on Friday. Expressing deep regret over the stampede deaths, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi had earlier tendered an apology over it and owning moral responsibility for today's tragic death. A high-level administrative inquiry has been constituted under the stewardship of the development commissioner (an officer of chief secretary rank) to detect the lapses and negligence on part of the authorities. Besides the Collector and SP Puri has been removed from Puri with immediate effect. Two police officers- deputy commissioner of police, Bishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhee- were placed under suspension for failure on their part to effectively carry out the crowd management. 'The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is the pride of Odisha. Negligence in discharging duty will not be tolerated. All those responsible for today's stampede will be meted out exemplary punishment', Chief Minister Majhi said in a statement. Meanwhile the State Government has announced Rs 25 lakh ex-gratia compensation to bereaved families who lost their loved ones in the stampede. The three victims – Basanti Sahu, Premakant Mohanty and Pravati Das- died of asphyxiation as the crowd trampled over them. "My government and I seek apology from all Jagannath devotees. We express our condolences to the families of those devotees whose lives were lost at Sharadhabali and pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannath to imbibe them the strength to bear with the loss of their near and dear ones," the CM said in a statement. The Opposition BJD and Congress also strongly criticized the BJP Government here for abysmal failure on part of the government to control the crowd. BJD President Naveen Patnaik assailing the government said the incident laid bare the glaring failure to ensure a safe and orderly Rath Yatra for devotees. 'I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the three devotees who have lost their lives in the tragic stampede at Saradhabali, Puri and I pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannatha for the swift recovery of the devotees injured in this devastating incident', Naveen Patnaik stated in 'X'. The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee Bhakta Charan Das also commenting on the same line lambasted the government. The mishap took place at around 4.20 am in front of three chariots of Lord Jagannath and his His siblings—Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. Poor crowd management and inadequate police deployment resulted in the tragic mishap. There was no presence of police or security forces anywhere near the chariots as the crowd surged to catch a glimpse of the deities during morning hours. It was some of the devotees and local youths who tried to control the crowd and saved several people from getting stuck in the stampede. But for their timely voluntary act, the death toll might have been much higher, said eyewitnesses. UNI XC RKM

Hindu Woman Allegedly Raped In Bangladesh's Comilla, BNP Leader Arrested Amid Protests

Last Updated: Fazor Ali, a local BNP leader, allegedly entered the house of the victim on Thursday night and raped her, after which locals intervened and thrashed him before he managed to flee. A 27-year-old Hindu woman was allegedly raped at her residence at a village of Muradnagar upazila in Bangladesh's Comilla district on Saturday night, sparking protests by students of Dhaka University. The incident took place on June 26 and came to light after a video of the naked woman being brutally assaulted and pleading with her attackers went viral on social media. Police have arrested five individuals, including Fazor Ali, 36, a local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader, in connection with the incident. According to Bangladesh's New Age outlet, Ali forcibly entered the house of the victim at around 11 pm and raped the woman before locals intervened and thrashed him, but Ali managed to flee. Muradnagar police station officer-in-charge Jahidur Rahman said the woman was the mother of two children and belonged to the Hindu community. 'On June 26, Fazor Ali (36), father – Shahid Mia, of Ramchadrapur Panchkitta village under Muradnagar police station of Comilla district, was detained and beaten by the people of the area on charges of raping the wife of an expatriate from the same village," Police said in a statement. Awami League supporters claimed a Hindu woman was gang-raped by BNP members. Students of Dhaka University took to the streets in the early hours of Sunday, demanding justice for the victim and asking the administration why she was assaulted. Police arrested Fazor Ali in Dhaka's Saydabad area at approximately 5 am on Sunday, and also arrested other individuals for allegedly circulating the video on social media. A case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act has been registered. There have been several instances of violence against Hindus in several areas of Bangladesh since August 5, 2024, when Sheikh Hasina was ousted as the Prime Minister of the neighbouring country. Earlier on May 31, a human chain and protest march was organised by various organisations in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka to protest the violence and torture being perpetrated against religious minorities and ethnic communities across Bangladesh, Sammilita Sanatan Parishad, a minority alliance, said in a statement. Addressing a weekly media briefing in New Delhi on June 27, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the interim government has to protect Hindus and other minorities.
