That said, the recent appointment of Lip-Bu Tan as the new CEO has been greeted with enthusiasm as the new man at the helm is considered a sound choice.
Tan also made a good impression during his keynote at the annual Intel Vision event last week in Las Vegas. Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya noted Tan's tone as 'generally more realistic and long-term focused, versus prior upbeat and overpromising mgmt. style.'
Led by Tan, the new leadership team is committed to improving transparency in communication with both customers (OEMs/ODMs) and shareholders. Importantly, says the 5-star analyst, Intel recognizes the challenges it currently faces and views its turnaround as a long-term process rather than a quick fix. While management has largely withheld specific details about its upcoming plans, Arya says 'Execution will remain key in its multi-year journey to reshape the company.' Tan's comments also put a renewed emphasis on revitalizing the company culture and once again attracting top talent.
Although the Vision 2025 event centered on Intel products, no new product announcements or roadmap updates were made. Instead, management emphasized fulfilling near-term commitments in PCs and servers while expanding into adjacent markets such as edge/IoT and automotive. In the data center space, Intel expects AI spending will grow from $234 billion in 2024 to $514 billion by 2027, reflecting a 30% CAGR. However, Arya notes that the company currently lacks a 'competitive AI portfolio,' as its existing 'Gaudi3' is only on par with Nvidia's H100 from 2022. Furthermore, its next-gen 'Jaguar Shores' product is not expected until late 2026 or 2027, by which time Nvidia will be ramping its Rubin platform.
Intel also reaffirmed that its long-anticipated 18A process node remains on schedule for high-volume manufacturing with the Panther Lake (PC) product in the second half of 2025. However, the real product ramp and financial impact will only take place in 2026.
While Arya likes Intel's new look, many aspects remain in the air, and investors should prepare for the turnaround to take some time.
'Overall,' Arya summed up, 'we believe Intel is heading toward the right direction, with an improved opportunity for a turnaround under Lip-Bu's leadership. However, there still remain many hurdles to overcome as a subscale IDM/foundry, with increasing competitive pressure on core x86 business (from AMD and ARM) amid quickly changing demand landscape in AI.'
Bottom line, Arya assigns a Neutral rating for Intel shares, along with a $25 price target. Shares could appreciate by ~26% should the analyst's thesis play out in the coming months. (To watch Arya's track record, click here)
That take is not far off the Street's general view on INTC; based on a mix of 27 Holds, 4 Sells and 1 Buy, the stock claims a Hold (i.e., Neutral) consensus rating. The average price target stands at $23.11, implying shares will surge ~16% over the next 12 months. (See INTC stock forecast)

Use ETFs to Diversify and Stay Ahead

The current market landscape is dominated by a handful of names. The Mag 7 now accounts for a historically large portion of the S&P 500's total market capitalization. Last week, NVIDIA NVDA shares surged, briefly pushing its market cap above $4 trillion for the first time. This highlighted growing investor and market enthusiasm surrounding the AI sector. The accelerating momentum behind the AI and tech rally is powering much of the broader market's gains. This is evident from the performance of the S&P 500 Information Technology Index, which has gained 9.44% year to date. However, investing heavily in the technology sector to capitalize on AI's growth potential comes with increased concentration risk and systemic risk. Underlying market risks make it necessary for investors to diversify. Long-term investors should consider broadening their exposure, not by abandoning the tech sector altogether but by complementing it with diversified holdings. This will enable them to preserve their growth potential while reducing vulnerability to market shocks that arise from overconcentration. What's Making Markets Vulnerable Renewed trade tensions are casting a cloud of uncertainty over global markets. According to Yahoo Finance, President Trump unexpectedly announced on Saturday that the United States will impose 30% tariffs on imports from the EU and Mexico, effective August 1, turning investor sentiment downbeat. This further escalates global trade tensions, creating a more uncertain economic landscape and further fueling inflationary pressures. The U.S economy faces headwinds due to inflationary pressure, intensified by the tariffs proposed by the President. Concerns over U.S. debt levels, coupled with leadership and political uncertainty of the Fed, dent investor confidence. A possible Fed leadership shake-up remains a significant source of investor unease. ETFs to Consider Preserving capital and cushioning volatility is key for investors looking to navigate a volatile period ahead. Reducing concentration risk by diversifying into ETFs that focus on value sectors or equal-weighted strategies can enhance resilience while still capturing upside potential. Diversification remains one of the most effective strategies for building resilient portfolios, especially in a market driven by a few dominant players. Below, we highlight a few areas in which investors can increase their exposure. Investing in these sectors not only shields portfolios from downside risks and safeguards investments during market distress but also offers gains when the broader market trends improve. These sectors provide dual benefits, protecting portfolios during market downturns and offering gains when the market rises. Value ETFs Vanguard Value ETF VTV, iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF IWD and iShares S&P 500 Value ETF IVE, having a Zacks ETF Rank #1 (Strong Buy) or 2 (Buy), could be appealing options. Characterized by solid fundamentals, such as earnings, dividends, book value and cash flow, these stocks trade below their intrinsic value, representing undervaluation. Gold ETFs Investors can also consider funds such as SPDR Gold Shares GLD, iShares Gold Trust IAU and SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust GLDM, increasing their exposure to the yellow metal. Across extended investment periods, gold preserves its purchasing power, outpacing inflation. Additionally, a safe-haven investment during a challenging period, gold remains a secure choice amid economic and geopolitical instability. Equal-Weighted ETFs These funds offer sector-level diversification by assigning equal weight to each constituent stock, regardless of market capitalization, reducing concentration risk. This makes them a relevant choice for investors seeking diversified exposure across sectors. Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF RSP, ALPS Equal Sector Weight ETF EQL and Invesco S&P 100 Equal Weight ETF EQWL are some good options. Consumer Staple ETFs Increasing exposure to consumer staple funds can bring balance and stability to investors' portfolios. Investors can put more money in consumer staples funds to safeguard themselves from potential market downturns. The S&P 500 Consumer Staples Index has gained 5.88% year to date and 10.30% over the past year. Investors can consider Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund XLP, Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF VDC and iShares U.S. Consumer Staples ETF IYK. Want key ETF info delivered straight to your inbox? Asia Pacific's Demand for IT and Business Services Slows in Q2, ISG Index™ Shows

Asia Pacific's spending on IT and business services slowed in the second quarter as enterprises remained cautious in the face of uncertain macro conditions, according to the latest state-of-the-industry report from Information Services Group ( ISG) (Nasdaq: III), a global AI-centered technology research and advisory firm. The Asia Pacific ISG Index™, which measures commercial outsourcing contracts with annual contract value (ACV) of US $5 million or more, shows second-quarter ACV for the combined market (both cloud-based XaaS and managed services) was down slightly (0.3 percent) versus the prior year, to US $4.7 billion. Sequentially, the market fell 12 percent compared with the first quarter. It was the first time the Asia Pacific market pulled back since the second quarter last year. Fueled by interest in AI, demand for cloud-based services remained robust, up 16 percent year on year, to US $3.9 billion, even as demand slowed 15 percent from the first quarter. Managed services, meanwhile, slumped 40 percent, to US $823 million, but rose 6 percent against the first quarter. Within the XaaS segment, infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) ACV advanced 17 percent, at US $3.4 billion, while software-as-a-service (SaaS) ACV grew 13 percent, to US $500 million. In managed services, IT outsourcing (ITO) ACV fell 46 percent, to US $539 billion, with even the largest and fastest-growing service area, application development and management (ADM), down more than 30 percent. Business process outsourcing (BPO) also had a weak quarter, down 34 percent, to US $133 million, with only customer engagement and facilities management services showing growth. Engineering, research and development (ER&D) services didn't fare much better, down 15 percent, to US $152 million. During the quarter, 69 managed services contracts were awarded, down 18 percent year on year. Among industries, the region's largest industry for sourcing—banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI)—was up 1.4 percent. Travel, transportation and leisure and retail both generated double-digit growth off smaller bases. All other sectors were down by double digits. Geographically, South Korea was the only market that grew, albeit off a small base. Australia-New Zealand was down 33 percent, India was down 16 percent and Japan was down 35 percent. 'Macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty is really taking a toll on the Asia Pacific market at the moment. The only bright spot right now is AI, which has companies investing in cloud services to take advantage of the massive computing power needed to run AI at scale,' said Michael Gale, partner and regional leader, ISG Asia Pacific. 'Given the quarter-over-quarter improvement we saw in managed services, we hope to see a turnaround in the overall market during the second half.' First-Half Results Asia Pacific's combined market ACV in the first half rose 4.3 percent versus the prior year, to US $10.1 billion. All the growth can be attributed to the XaaS segment, which rose 17 percent, to US $8.5 billion. Within XaaS, IaaS was up 17 percent, to US $7.4 billion, while SaaS rose 16 percent, to US $1.0 billion. Managed services, meanwhile, declined 34 percent, to US $1.6 billion. All its component pieces were down double digits, including ITO, down 31 percent, to US $1.1 billion; BPO, down 33 percent, to US $288 million, and ER&D down 51 percent, to US $175 million. The 126 managed services contracts awarded in the first half were down 16 percent from the prior year. Among industries, the largest sector for outsourcing, BFSI, was down 16 percent, while the second largest, manufacturing, was off 19 percent. Among geographic markets, only India managed growth in the first half, up 2.4 percent. 2025 Global Forecast For the full year, ISG is maintaining its forecast of 1.3 percent revenue growth for managed services, reflecting a stabilizing tariff environment but also continued weakness in discretionary spending. At the same time, ISG is raising its previous growth forecast for cloud-based XaaS by 300 basis points, to 21 percent, based on continuing strong demand for AI-driven transformation.
