It is barely 8:30 am, yet the July humidity already presses heavily upon Danapur in rural Patna. Among a throng of booth level officers (BLOs), Divya Shakti, the sub-divisional magistrate of Danapur and a 2022 batch IAS officer, moves with unhurried assurance, mingling with voters at the Baldeva High School, scrutinising forms, scanning documents and cross-checking entries against the electoral rolls. Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the figures presented by the Modi government in Parliament prove what he called 'institutional Manuism' and systematic denial of rights to marginalised communities.
Quoting official data in his X post, Gandhi claimed that in central universities across India, 83% of posts reserved for ST professors, 80% for OBC professors and 64% for SC professors have been deliberately left vacant. The government has dismissed suggestions that Operation Sindoor was launched under international pressure, clarifying it was a direct response to a "barbaric cross-border terror attack" by Pakistan-backed militants. Replying to a question raised by a Samajwadi Party MP, the government said the operation aimed to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and neutralize militants poised to infiltrate India.
"India's actions were focused, measured, and non-escalatory. Pakistan, however, attempted targeting Indian civilian areas, in addition to some military facilities. These provocations and escalatory actions by Pakistan were met with a strong and decisive response from the Indian armed forces, inflicting significant damage on the Pakistani military. Subsequently, on 10 May 2025, the Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan approached his Indian counterpart to request for cessation of firing and military activities, which was agreed to later that day," the government said in its reply.

New Delhi: The day after Parliament completed the debate on the Pahalgam terrorist attack and Operation Sindoor, the opposition resumed its protest in the Lok Sabha on Thursday against the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, stalling the proceedings and forcing multiple adjournments. With the opposition's political focus turning to the upcoming assembly election in Bihar, the protest against SIR may cast its shadow on the remaining monsoon session of Parliament. As soon as the House assembled in the morning, the MPs belonging to the opposition INDIA bloc started protesting by demanding a discussion on the SIR and calling for the withdrawal of the Election Commission's drive in Bihar. The protest plan had been firmed up at a meeting of the INDIA bloc floor leaders earlier in the morning. As the opposition MPs indulged in sloganeering, entered the well of the House and waved placards, speaker Om Bira adjourned the House till 2 pm. When Lok Sabha reassembled, the opposition members repeated their protest against the SIR drive. Samajwadi Party MP Awadesh Prasad, who was in the speaker's chair, asked members to return to their seats and allow the proceedings to continue. Papers were laid on the table amid sloganeering. Hindu Terrorism: Congress Leader Reacts To Saffron Terror Narrative After Malegaon Verdict

Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday maintained the existence of 'Hindu terrorism' hours after an NIA court acquited all six accused in the Malegaon blasts case, a verdict termed victory by the BJP against Congress party's 'saffron terror' narrative. Prithviraj Chavan said that while using the 'saffron terror' term may not be appropriate, it should be called 'Hindu terrorism'. "Don't use the term 'Saffron terrorism'. If you want to describe such acts, use 'Hindu fundamentalist' or 'Hindu terrorism' instead," Chavan told PTI. Reacting on Amit Shah's statement that no Hindu can ever be a terrorist, Chavan said that the first terrorist incident in independent India was carried out by Nathuram Godse, who killed Mahatma Gandhi. "Which religion did he belong to? Terrorism has no religion. This is the BJP's mindset to connect terrorism with religion," said Chavan, contradicting himself minutes after reaffirming 'Hindu terrorism' stance. "After the 42nd Amendment by PM Indira Gandhi, a part was added in fundamental duties of citizens. It was stated that it shall be the duty of the citizens to inculcate the scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry... I am just asking the government whether what they are saying is in accordance with temper and the spirit of inquiry. We all are Hindu, but we are not Hindutva fundamentalists," asked Chavan. Earlier during the day, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said, "The way the Congress-led UPA government conspired to set the narrative of saffron terrorism, Hindu terrorism and prepared the entire Malegaon case, today it has been exposed... Congress tried to bring the narrative to please its vote bank, especially the vote bank of a particular religion. The work done by Congress to label all Hindus as terrorists, today, the whole country is condemning it. We demand that Congress apologise for calling out terms like Hindu terrorism and saffron terrorism." Mumbai Special National Investigative Agency Court (NIA) on Thursday acquitted all seven accused of being involved in the 2008 blasts in Malegaon, with the court saying the prosecution failed to establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt. A total of seven people were accused, including former MP Sadhvi Pragya, Major (retired) Ramesh Upadhyay, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhankar Dhar Dwivedi (Shankaracharya) and Sameer Kulkarni.

EVMs tamper proof, no mismatch found: ECI

New Delhi: All applications filed and processed after the Maharashtra assembly elections for Checking and Verification (C&V) of EVM burnt memory have come clean, the latest ECI statement on ten such cases shows. This exercise proves, yet again, that "the EVMs are tamper proof," said ECI. In cases where a mock poll was held, the results of EVM (from Control Unit) were verified with the VVPAT slips count and "no mismatch was found", ECI underlined. The Maharashtra C&V clean chit is in keeping with the trend so far as similar applications, filed after 2024 Lok Sabha elections and assembly polls thereafter, have found no tampering with the EVM microcontroller or burnt memory. Nearly 100 C&V applications were filed in Maharashtra, mainly by the INDIA bloc after tightly contested 2024 assembly elections.
