
Fine wine prices have fallen sharply: Here's what collectors are buying now
It's enough to make anyone think about drowning their sorrows. But Miles Davis, a consultant at London-based merchant Vinum Fine Wines, has noted some unusual behaviour recently: His customers are buying again.
'In the first half of June, we were fortunate enough to [have] some chunky orders,' he says.
Falling prices have helped shift what kinds of wines buyers are looking for. Traditionally, seasoned collectors would invest in younger bottles and hold on to them for 10 or more years to let the flavour — and hopefully the price tag — improve. With little indication that the market value when they come to sell will justify the holding costs, buyers these days, especially younger ones, are doing things differently.
'The wealthy we see buying fine wines today are buying them to drink [now],' says Nick Pegna, global head of wine & spirits at Sotheby's. 'They are interested in wine and the experience. They are buying mature wines [that are] available now.'
So what wines are selling right now? And after some hefty price falls, are there some bargains to be had?
NOT SO LONG AGO, THE MARKET LOOKED ROSIER
Up until 2020, a series of ever-warmer growing seasons and some improvements in winemaking, including using precision digital tools on viticulture, contributed to a halcyon period for Europe's top winemakers.
Then a burst of COVID-era purchases by stuck-at-home wine connoisseurs, who bought up the best of France, Italy and the US through most of 2022, led to a final surge in prices.
A hangover from the pandemic period boom then settled in. When the Russian invasion of Ukraine sent commodity prices soaring and central banks raised interest rates sharply, fine wine buying dried up.
Bordeaux and Burgundy wines, the most widely traded, have suffered badly. A Liv-ex price index of Bordeaux's 500 best wines has dropped 23 per cent over the two years to June. Its Burgundy 150 benchmark has lost 27 per cent.
The depth of this bear market has surprised even long-term veterans of the London fine wine market, such as Stephen Browett, chair of Farr Vintners, who has worked in the business for 45 years.
'This is looking like the weakest wine market we've had in a very long time. In the banking crisis of 2008, the market was very weak but then the duty came off in Hong Kong [causing] the Asian market to boom afterwards. Our business [for French wines] in Hong Kong then just exploded.'
'Buyers are in the driving seat at the moment,' adds Browett. 'But no one needs to buy wine.'
Add to this the cost of safely storing these wines, which in the UK can cost from £1 (US$1.35; S$1.72) to £1.50 per bottle annually before any taxes and duties. Those with large collections in storage may have thousands of pounds of added costs annually, painful if some of that collection is falling in price as well.
'What's worrying people about this fine wine market problem is that it's broad,' says Justin Gibbs co-founder at Liv-ex, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
In past slumps when demand for Bordeaux slowed, buyers opened their wallets to buy wines from Burgundy and Tuscany as well as vintage Champagne. 'But now it's not just Bordeaux [falling in price], it's happening in Italy and California.'
Despite the gloom, both Gibbs and his founding partner James Miles see value worth chasing, particularly in Bordeaux. 'Over the next 12 to 18 months this is a great time to be picking up bargains [there],' believes Miles. 'Your downside is limited.'
With the wine industry under pressure, adds Miles, the potential for bankruptcies and liquidations will grow. That could mean discounted offers of top bottles from Bordeaux, Burgundy and elsewhere. 'There will be chances across the board to buy wine 30-50 per cent from peak prices of October 2022.'
AN EARLY VICTIM OF THE DOWNTURN WAS BORDEAUX
There, winemakers have long had a practice of offering their newest vintages for sale well before bottling, known as en primeur. But previous discounts offered by the chateaux to their customers, partly to attract working capital, not only disappeared but turned into a premium to older vintages.
That dismayed the market. A reticence to pay a premium for wines, not yet bottled and which might need ageing (and storage) for a decade or more, has put off collectors.
'For sophisticated drinkers who don't need [or want] to deal with ageing their wines, they may prefer to buy drinking wines from much earlier years,' says Chloe Ashton, managing director at 1275 Collections, a fine wine curator.
'There are small parcels of these older, greater wines sitting with chateaux or negociants [wholesalers who buy from the chateaux],' she says. Some of her clients have found supply of rare vintages, such as Mouton Rothschild 1982.
Ashton also points to those vintages which received less than stellar reviews at the time, but have since evolved into lovely wines. She suggests looking at the 1983 Bordeaux vintage for clarets or bottles from 1995 and 2001.
'The point is there is not a rule on vintages,' she adds. 'In the last 10-15 years, the baseline [quality] . . . is so much better than it was.'
Collectors might rightly ask where the future buyers will come from. US and Asian connoisseurs are less active then they were two decades ago.
However some are taking small sips. Where prices have fallen, 'customers are buying better but less,' according to Shaun Bishop at JJ Buckley Fine Wines near San Francisco. 'That has mostly happened for Bordeaux, Burgundy less so.'
His clients were less bothered by the swelling cost of the chateaux releases during en primeur. Bishop says that what customers do not like is the uncertainty about the final delivery price of foreign wines, due to President Donald Trump's vacillating policies on tariff s. Instead, they prefer to buy what Bishop already has in stock, which is dwindling. 'The consumer right now wants something that is in a bottle and ready to go.'
Hong Kong was once the epicentre of the Asian buying boom in the mid-noughties. Paulo Pong at Altaya Wines thinks that while his customers still love Bordeaux, there's plenty of stock available that is ready to drink. So for them 'there's no point in buying young Bordeaux and ageing'.
Altaya has had more interest in Burgundy after prices have fallen. Given the small acreage and low volumes produced — in bottles not cases — a little selling can quickly move prices of the most expensive wines.
'Increasingly, there's a trend [in Hong Kong] of people drinking more white wine,' he says. 'With Burgundy this is a challenge for us, as we can't get enough of some top whites. And [our clients] are drinking these much younger, focusing on Premier Crus and Grand Crus from communes such as Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet.' Top producers include Coche-Dury and Colin-Morey.

A homesick craving inspired her to launch a Singaporean supper club and food brand in London
It was a comforting bowl of bak chor mee (minced meat noodle) that changed it all. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Megan Tan was living in London and working as a finance lawyer. With the city in lockdown, her homesick roommate was craving local Singaporean food. 'It was her birthday and we couldn't go anywhere. I wanted to do something thoughtful for her, so I asked her what her favourite dish was. It was bak chor mee, so I Googled a recipe and made it for the first time,' Tan, 30, recalled. That simple act of cooking for a friend was enough to spark a realisation in Tan for two reasons. 'First, it was the feeling of making something with my own two hands. And second, it was making something that I love so much, and that she loved so much too, and the joy that it brought to the both of us.' In fact, Tan enjoyed the experience of cooking for others so much that for the rest of the lockdown, she started opening up orders for dishes such as wonton mee, Hokkien mee and carrot cake on her Instagram. During the weekends, she would cook the dishes and cycle out to deliver them herself. 'I had a lot of fun and I think it gave me a lot of meaning and human connection at a time when it was very short in supply,' Tan, a self-professed extrovert, reflected. Eventually, she launched Homi Kitchen, a supper club run out of her apartment where she serves Singaporean dishes to guests. What started as a nostalgic dinner for her social bubble soon evolved into something bigger. Beyond the supper club, Tan is on a mission to create a brand that can make 'Singaporean flavours easily accessible on supermarket shelves for everyone in the UK', said the young entrepreneur. In early 2025, Tan went on to launch her first product – the Giga Chicken Rice Chilli sauce, a flavour-packed condiment inspired by one Singapore's most beloved dishes, with more products already in the pipeline. FROM LAW TO LOCAL FLAVOURS Born and raised in Singapore, Tan grew up in a three-generation household in Serangoon, with her grandmother, an avid cook, cooking Teochew dishes every day for the family. 'She's the queen of the kitchen. I would try to help, but quite often I would be making things worse,' Tan recalled with a laugh. It wasn't until she studied law at the University of Oxford in the UK that she began experimenting with cooking herself. 'I missed food from home, and the funny thing is, I didn't have a kitchen in my college accommodation. I only had a rice cooker, and I had all my sauces and ingredients in a box.' She made do with the limited setup, cooking Asian comfort dishes such as chicken curry and katsu curry in that one pot. She often invited friends to gather in her room for dinner, who brought over their own bowls and cutlery. After completing her legal training back in Singapore, Tan made the jump to move to London full-time. 'Within the legal industry, London is one of the big hot spots for top-notch firms and teams. It is also a very international, cosmopolitan city,' she said of the move. A few years into her legal career, Tan quickly realised that her true passion laid elsewhere. 'What sparked the greatest joy for me was being in the consumer retail space, and seeing my customers really enjoying my food and being grateful for the comfort that a simple bowl of noodles brought them,' said Tan. Homi Kitchen was a way for her to indulge in her love for cooking while balancing a demanding day job. 'Why I started the supper club was to also test my theory that there's a growing interest in Singaporean food in the UK. It was a way to meet people who weren't necessarily from Singapore or Malaysia to find out how they know about the cuisine and why they were curious enough to try it,' Tan explained. For her very first supper club, Tan whipped up a Hainanese chicken rice feast. Later on, the menus featured other Singaporean hawker favourites such as carrot cake, wonton mee and even a chilli crab and black pepper crab session. Seats are usually priced around £25 (S$42). At the table, 'there was always a mix of nationalities, which is reflective of life in London,' said Tan. Despite the success of the supper club, Tan knew that if she were to leave her job, it would not be to continue hosting private dinners. Instead, she had bigger ambitions. 'Here in London, we already have a growing number of Singaporean and Malaysian restaurants. We have Singapulah, which still has long queues months after opening, and we've got Old Chang Kee as well, so I don't think London necessarily needs another restaurant,' said Tan. 'I think what the UK is lacking is authentic Singaporean flavours on grocery shelves.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Homi Kitchen (@ From her very first supper club session, where she served Hainanese chicken rice, Tan was already toying with the idea of selling the accompanying chilli sauce she had made from scratch. Over time, she used each supper club as a testing ground, gathering feedback from her diners. 'I wanted to get a good sense of what would be a great product that people actually want,' she said. 'By the time I left my job, I had a very clear idea of what the product would be and the kind of people who would be interested in the brand.' COOKING UP A BRAND With the Giga Chilli Sauce, Tan wants to bridge the gap between home-cooked meals and dining out at a restaurant. The condiment is meant to help home cooks add interesting, familiar flavours to their dishes with minimal effort. Tan's customers have been creative in the way they use the sauce too. Beyond pairing it with chicken rice, they have slathered it on sandwiches or stirred it into their takeaway pho from the nearby Vietnamese restaurant. At one of Homi Kitchen's pop-up events, Tan even created a 'chicken rice cocktail' in the form of a spicy margarita with the chilli sauce as a base, in collaboration with a bar in Camden market. Customers interested in the Giga Chilli Sauce can currently purchase it online on Homi Kitchen's website. The condiment is also stocked at grocers, food courts and delis such as Raya at Borough Market, Eat 17 on Orford Road, Polhill Farm Shop at London Road and Harvest E1 on Brick Lane. The name Homi Kitchen – a playful twist on 'home' that also means 'homie', as in friend – reflects Tan's dual vision for the brand. 'As I started out as a homerun supper club, I wanted people to feel at home with the brand. It's also a reminder to myself that my focus is also on getting my products into other people's homes.' The brand wants to share the 'crazy rich flavours of Singapore" beyond its shores, as its tagline encapsulates. And for Tan, the chilli sauce is just the beginning. 'Right now, it's just chilli sauce, but long-term, the other products I have in mind are stuff like ready made char kway teow that you can pop into the microwave,' Tan elaborated. 'Of course, it will never be as good as going to your favourite store in Singapore, but my goal is to get as close as humanly and to fill that gap for someone who misses local food, or someone who is curious about the cuisine.' Tan is already working on Homi Kitchen's next condiment, the Hei Hei Black Pepper Sauce, slated to launch soon. 'At my black pepper and chilli crab supper club, some of the guests loved the black pepper sauce so much that they asked if I was going to start selling it,' shared Tan. 'I started looking into it and making the sauce for people to try at my events, putting them on things like tater tots just to get people to see it as something different and seeing how it lands. People really loved the flavour.' FINDING PURPOSE Giving up a prestigious career in law to pursue an uncharted path is a bold move. 'Growing up in Asia, and maybe especially in my generation, you are brought up to study hard to secure a good, stable job for the rest of your life,' said Tan, who attended Raffles Girls School and later Raffles Institution in Singapore. 'Reflecting on my younger years, part of why I chased a law career was because my friends were doing so,' Tan reflected. 'But as objectively desirable I knew a law career is for many people, eventually I had to accept that I would never be 100 per cent happy.' Stepping into entrepreneurship is 'unfamiliar territory' for her family, who do not come from a business background. While her parents were initially worried she was making a rash decision, they supported her wholeheartedly. Tan makes regular trips back to Singapore to spend time with her family. Her go-to dish when she's home? A comforting bowl of bak chor mee. Back in London, Tan continues to host supper club sessions while developing new products for Homi Kitchen. In June, she hosted two sold-out events in collaboration with Hong Kong milk tea brand Chadong. On the menu were dishes such as Hei Hei Pepper Pork Belly, Hainanese Chicken Rice and Popiah, while Chadong contributed milk bread prawn toast, lychee and lime granita and Hong Kong French toast ice cream bars. Despite the uncertainties that lie with entrepreneurship, Tan has found a sense of purpose in building something of her own. 'Whatever the outcome, I can say that I already find this journey meaningful,' she reflected. 'This is something I intrinsically want to do. No one needs to tell me that I'm doing a good job, or that it's the right thing to do. It still feels right for me."

Stocks sink on Trump tariffs, US jobs data
LONDON: Stock markets slid Friday (Aug 1) after US President Donald Trump announced tariffs on dozens of trading partners and weak US jobs data fuelled the fall. Wall Street's Dow Jones index dropped more than 1.2 per cent as trading got underway in New York, while Paris and Frankfurt tumbled more than two per cent. The dollar gave up earlier gains against key currencies. With hours to go before Trump's Aug 1 deadline for governments to make toll-averting deals, the president unveiled a list of sweeping levies. Hours later, the US Labor Department said the US economy added just 73,000 jobs in July while revising lower the figures for May and June. "The US payrolls data has eclipsed news about the latest tariff rates applied to the world's economies by Donald Trump, and is now dominating markets," said Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB trading group. Earlier, she noted, tariffs were "the main theme sucking risk sentiment from financial markets". Governments around the world have been scrambling to cut deals with the White House since Trump unveiled his bombshell "Liberation Day" tariffs on Apr 2. He has delayed implementation of the tariffs several times - the latest move pushing them back by a week to Aug 7. SWITZERLAND, CANADA TARIFF HIT Some trading partners have reached deals with the United States - including Britain, the European Union, Japan and South Korea. China remains in talks with Washington to extend a fragile truce in place since May. For those in the crosshairs of the latest outburst, tariff rates range from 10 per cent to 41 per cent. Shares in European pharmaceutical firms meanwhile slumped following the president's threat to punish them if they did not lower prices for medicines in the United States. Tariffs uncertainty overshadowed earnings from major tech titans this week that saw Apple on Thursday post double-digit quarterly revenue growth that beat expectations. Amazon said quarterly profits jumped 35 per cent as key major investments in AI technology paid off, though its outlook for the next three months disappointed. Google, Microsoft and Meta have also posted bumper results in recent days.

Liberty Global says Virgin Media O2 will still play role in consolidation
LONDON :Liberty Global said Britain's Virgin Media O2 - its joint venture with Telefonica - would still play a role in fibre consolidation after the Spanish company said a plan to spin off the network had been scrapped. "I do see us playing a role in altnet (alternative fibre networks) consolidation, which was one of the main benefits of the Netco project that we were exploring together," Chief Executive Mike Fries told analysts after the group reported second-quarter results on Friday. "I think there are many things about the Netco strategy that Telefonica would agree with and other aspects they don't. "And so as good partners we will work to find the areas of agreement and head forward." Telefonica's Chief Executive Marc Murtra told Reuters on Wednesday the plan to spin off Virgin Media O2's fixed network had been scrapped.
