Wildfires expected to approach lodges and cabins 60 km east of Yellowknife within days

CBC8 hours ago
The owners of Hearne Lake Lodge are preparing their property for a wildfire that could reach it by July 6.
The lodge, about 60 kilometres east of Yellowknife, has survived close calls in the past, including in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2023.
Edie Yoder, the lodge's owner, spoke with CBC News by satellite phone from her property.
"We're feeling very stressed, of course. I mean, this is our life and it's a beautiful area [we've] worked hard to protect and to welcome guests from around the world to come in here," Yoder said.
"I think we both have some PTSD from the fire, especially in 2014, that almost caused us to lose the lodge."
There are two fires threatening Hearne Lake Lodge: one near the south end of Campbell Lake and another about three kilometres east of Watta Lake.
Mike Westwick, manager of wildfire prevention and mitigation for the N.W.T. government, said the fires were started by lightning that struck in late June or early July.
The fires have grown significantly in recent days due to high winds and dry conditions.
Westwick said the closest fire is within 10 kilometres of the lodge.
He said the Watta Lake fire is the one they're most concerned about, as there are also lodges there. He added there are cabins on Campbell Lake as well.
N.W.T. Fire has urged people in the area to leave, with the fires expected to reach properties in that area within days. Yoder said they plan to stay in the vicinity and continue to refill the fuel tank on the water tank to ensure the sprinklers keep running.
Yoder said they have a plan to head to an island and set up a tent in case they need to leave the lodge quickly.
"We're packing up important documents and whatnot incase we do have a fire reach us," she said.
She said although the lodge has survived numerous past fires, the burn area doesn't completely protect her property.
"This area that it would would come through towards us has not burned," she said.
"It'll almost be a clear path for the fire if the winds change."
She said their main line of defence is a sprinkler system they've set up.
"We'll run it for at least an hour to soak down the grounds and build up a moisture as an extra step with protection," she said.
Yoder said on Friday morning that there had been some rain, which gave them some hope.
Yoder said Hearne Lake Lodge is a small lodge that her and her partner have poured "their heart, soul and life savings into it." They've been there since 2011.
Due to the intensity of the fires on Thursday, crews needed to be pulled off directly attacking the fire. Instead those resources are being used to protect structures in the area.

Heat warning issued for Toronto this weekend, city to open 24/7 cooling space

People soak in the sun over looking Lake Ontario on a warm sunny day at Woodbine Beach in Toronto on Tuesday, May 25, 2021. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Nathan Denette A heat warning has been issued for Toronto and much of southern Ontario this weekend, with temperatures set to feel like 40 with the humidity. Environment Canada issued the alert Friday afternoon and said daytime highs of 31 C to 33 C are expected on both Saturday and Sunday. 'Take action to protect yourself and others – extreme heat can affect everyone's health," the national weather agency said in the alert. Officials say there will be 'little relief' overnight Saturday, when the temperature will only drop to between 21 C and 25 C. The heat is expected to break Sunday night. Environment Canada urged the public to stay hydrated, use air conditioning if available, limit direct exposure to the sun and limit outdoor activities to the coolest parts of the day. This is the second time in as many weeks that Toronto has been under a heat warning. The city broke a decade-old temperature record on June 23 when the mercury reached 36 C during the three-day event. Toronto Public Health said it saw 42 heat-related ER visits as temperatures soared that week. Friday's heat warning is far reaching, and covers Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Mississauga, Brampton, Newmarket, Niagara Falls, Barrie, Burlington, and many other municipalities. Environment Canada advised to watch out for early signs of heat exhaustion and call 911 if you, or someone around you, is showing signs of heat stroke, including red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion and change in consciousness. Toronto opens 24/7 cooling space The City of Toronto says it will activate the Metro Hall Rotunda as a 24/7 cooling space starting at noon on Saturday until the heat warning is in effect. Five air-conditioned civic buildings will also be open to the public on extended hours. The following eight outdoor pools are open this weekend until 11:45 p.m. while the warning is in effect: The city said it will be increasing staff by 30 per cent this weekend to ensure all 54 outdoor pools remain operational. Fans and shade structures have been installed for lifeguards and Toronto paramedics will provide wellness checks to high priority locations, the city added. In a news release, Hamilton's medical officer of health said the city is responding by offering so-called 'cool places' to go during the heat wave, the locations of which can be found here.

Locations impacted include Atikokan, Dovetail Lake, Steep Rock Lake, Finlayson Lake and Marmion Lake. Wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour and rainfall rates reaching nearly 50 mm per hour are possible. ECCC adds a second area of severe thunderstorms, also located near the Minnesota border, are moving east at 65 km/h. Areas impacted include Dumbbell Lake, Namakan Lake and Sand Point Lake.
