Jodie Burrage ponders trip to see boyfriend play for the Lions after SW19 exit

Independent16 hours ago
Jodie Burrage is contemplating a trip to Australia to cheer on rugby star boyfriend Ben White after fighting back tears following a distressing early Wimbledon exit.
The British wild card began the week with good news when Scotland scrum-half White was a late addition to the British and Irish Lions squad for their series against the Wallabies.
But her joy turned to despair on Tuesday following a comprehensive 6-3 6-1 first-round loss to American Caty McNally on her SW19 comeback.
The 26-year-old, who missed much of last season due to injury, revealed she rolled an ankle at the All England Club just three days before the start of the championship and was visibly upset during an emotional post-match press conference in which she branded her performance 'shocking'.
As her attention turns to the hardcourt swing in the United States, Burrage is considering flying out to support long-term partner White.
'It's a conversation I'm going to have to have with my team,' said Burrage, who is still scheduled to play doubles in south west London this week.
'Maybe considering my ankle and stuff, I might be able to. Obviously Australia is a very easy place to find tennis courts and train, so that's one thing going for me.
'I've been playing so many tournaments. I've been going week after week after week, so I do need some time training. That was always the case anyway. So maybe that will be there.'
Toulon player White initially missed out on Lions selection before receiving a call from head coach Andy Farrell due to the injury withdrawal of Wales' Tomos Williams.
The 27-year-old swiftly joined the squad in Brisbane, having been with the Scotland team in New Zealand – 11 hours ahead of Burrage in the UK.
'I was about to go to sleep, and he called me 10 minutes later and kind of was just looking at me down the phone, like with a grin on his face,' she said.
'I was, just, like, 'Oh, my God, what?' I was very, very happy for him to get that call. He'll do great.
'He's enjoying being with the Lions and it will be a very fun six weeks for him ahead.'
Burrage, who would have faced five-time grand slam winner Iga Swiatek in round two, defeated McNally at Wimbledon two years ago.
But hampered by the latest of a series of ankle problems, she was unable to repeat the feat on Court 18 and was eliminated by the world number 208 in an hour and four minutes.
'It's nowhere near 100 per cent,' she said of her ankle. 'My level today was shocking compared to how I've been playing the last few weeks.
'There's probably a few things going into that: wanting to do well this week at Wimbledon because I missed it last year, obviously what I just said about what happened on Friday (rolling her ankle), just everything.
'Sometimes you just have a bad day at the office, and sometimes your opponent has a very good one.
'I just wanted more from myself. I know the work that I've put in, and I felt like I deserved a better outcome than that.'

Which British tennis players are still playing at Wimbledon?

As is always the case when Wimbledon rolls around, British fans have their eyes on the home favourites bidding for glory in London. Andy Murray ended a 77-year wait for a home champion at the grass-court grand slam in 2013, before replicating his triumph in 2016, but there have been no British winners in the singles draw since – on either the men's or women's side. Still, day one saw a record seven Britons advance this year, but how are the home crop faring now? Emma Raducanu managed a spirited run in SW19 in 2021 before winning the US Open later that year, and she leads the charge in the women's draw this year. She won in round one, albeit at the expense of another Briton, in Swansea's Mingge Xu, and continues her title bid against a fellow major winner: Marketa Vondrousova, who won Wimbledon in 2023 no less, but whom Raducanu ousted in 2021. Elsewhere on the women's side, Heather Watson, Harriet Dart and Francesca Jones fell at the first hurdle, but Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal advanced – beating ninth seed Paula Badosa and 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko respectively. Next up for Boulter is Solana Sierra, while Kartal plays Viktoriya Tomova. However, other beaten Britons in the women's first round were Hannah Klugman and Mika Stojsavljevic, part of a crop of talented British teenagers who were awarded main-draw wildcards to Wimbledon for the first time. On the men's side, title hopeful Jack Draper dismissed Sebastian Baez in straight sets, with the Argentine retiring when two sets down, to set up a second-round match with major winner and former Wimbledon runner-up Marin Cilic. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Oliver Tarvet overcame Leandro Riedi but now faces defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who triumphed at the All England Club in 2023 as well. In an all-British tie, Dan Evans progressed at the expense of Jay Clarke, while Cam Norrie battled past Roberto Bautista Agut in round one and now takes on 12th seed Francis Tiafoe in what could be a thrilling tie. Jack Pinnington Jones, 22, stunned Tomas Martin Etcheverry, while Arthur Fery upset 20th seed Alexei Popyrin, with Luciano Darderi awaiting in round two, and Billy Harris is also in the second round after beating Dusan Lajovic in an impressive straight-sets victory. However, Johannus Monday could not get past the first round, losing to 13th seed Tommy Paul in straight sets, and George Loffhagen also fell, as did 2023 boys' singles champion Henry Searle. All three were awarded main-draw wildcards to SW19. Major update in Ty Zantuck's law suit against his old club Richmond, after a training ground incident left the ex-AFL player's 'life crippled'

The Richmond Football Club have reached an undisclosed settlement agreement with former payer Ty Zantuck. The footy star had been seeking damages from the AFL club after claiming the Tigers allegedly mistreated him during a training camp back in 2001. The former footy star told a court he had stress fractures in his back. However, during the training camp, he claimed the club made him carry a 30kg backpack. The 43-year-old also claims to have been administered between 15 to 20 epidurals along with multiple local anaesthetic injections to keep him available to play football. Zantuck, speaking to The Herald Sun, claimed that while he still loves the Tigers, the club 'got the treatment horribly wrong.' He also claimed that the repeated injections 'ruined the muscles in my body.' The footy star had been seeking damages from the AFL club after claiming they allegedly mistreated him during a training camp back in 2001 Zantuck was drafted to the Melbourne-based team in 2000 and played 68 matches for the Tigers, before leaving for Essendon in 2004. He was delisted a season later by the club. Zantuck had sued the club for a breach of its duty of care, with the legal battle having gone back and forth for several years. Supreme Court judge Justice Mary-Jane Ierodiaconou had granted an extension on the statute of limitations on the footy player's claim in 2022. During a hearing, Justice Ierodiancono described the alleged conduct by the football club as 'egregious' and had left Zantuck's 'life crippled'. 'I'm still traumatised by the whole thing,' the former defender said during an earlier court hearing. 'I still love the Richmond Football Club, my two sons barrack for them,' he added. His lawyer Greg Griffin said the legal process had been 'difficult'. 'All parties are happy to see it finished,' he explained. In 2021, Zantuck was diagnosed with suspected chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The disease is a progressive brain injury that is thought to be caused by repeated head injuries. Health professionals say that the illness slowly gets worse over time and leads to dementia.
