Despite Democratic control, Colorado resembles right-to-work states

Axios14-05-2025
Colorado's blue-state status is tarnished by a prominent red mark: a legacy of suppressing labor unions.
Why it matters: This legislative session, Democratic lawmakers and labor leaders worked in tandem to flip the dynamic with a bill that would make it easier for unions to collectively bargain.
Yes, but: Democratic Gov. Jared Polis plans to veto the bill and keep Colorado aligned with conservative, right-to-work states.
State of play: Colorado is unique given its requirement for a second state-run election before unions can collectively bargain and collect mandatory union fees.
The second election requires a 75% supermajority of those voting or more than 50% of all eligible voters, whichever is greater.
By the numbers: The extra hurdle contributes to a low union membership rate in Colorado — 8% in 2024 — putting it on par with right-to-work states like Alabama, Kansas and Mississippi, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
The lack of a union contract leads to lower wages and benefits, as well as reduced workplace safety, researchers report.
What they're saying: In a recent interview, Polis says he believes "there's a better solution for Colorado than the Labor Peace Act," but he wants a compromise between labor unions and the business community that is "sustainable."
The two sides negotiated for months but reached an impasse at the end of the legislative session.
The big picture: The current law took hold in 1943 as part of deal between workers' rights and business interests.
Critics consider it a byproduct of the era's backlash against organizing workers and a vestige of a movement that shares roots with white supremacy campaigns.
Business interests argue that removing the second vote would hurt Colorado's competitiveness in recruiting companies, citing an industry-backed study that warned about reduced job growth and a higher cost of living.
Flashback: In 2007, the last time Democrats controlled the governor's office and state Legislature, the party's lawmakers passed a similar bill to eliminate the second labor election, but then-Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter vetoed the measure.
The next year, voters rejected a ballot measure to make Colorado a right-to-work state.
The bottom line: The union fight won't end with the governor's veto of Senate Bill 5.

Trump rants that his ‘PAST' supporters have bought into Jeffrey Epstein ‘Hoax'

President Donald Trump has unleashed yet another tirade at his own supporters as his Make America Great Again movement continues to push back at the Justice Department's refusal to release case files from the prosecution of deceased sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. In a post on Truth Social, the 47th president, who once spoke highly of the disgraced financier and his proclivity for surrounding himself with young women, resumed arguing that the furor around the so-called 'Epstein files' — a longtime fixation for many of his supporters who believe they contain damaging information on prominent Democrats and other liberal celebrities — is a creation of his political enemies rather than anything genuinely felt by his political base. Trump compared the burgeoning scandal around his own Department of Justice to past political blow-ups around Russia's interference in the 2016 election and Hunter Biden's infamous laptop, calling the present dustup a 'SCAM' perpetrated by Democrats and labeling it as 'what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax.' He also suggested that anyone still clamoring for the documents is not a true supporter of his. 'My PAST supporters have bought into this 'bullshit,' hook, line, and sinker. They haven't learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years,' he said 'I have had more success in 6 months than perhaps any President in our Country's history, and all these people want to talk about, with strong prodding by the Fake News and the success starved Dems, is the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax.' Continuing, the president went on to disavow those supporters who still want his administration to come clean on the case files assembled as federal investigators and prosecutors built a case against Epstein for sex trafficking during his first term. The former math teacher turned financial adviser, who federal agents arrested on sex trafficking charges in July 2019, hanged himself roughly a month later in a Manhattan detention facility where he was awaiting trial. For years, the president's supporters have pushed for release of what they believe was a list of powerful people to whom Epstein is alleged to have trafficked young girls, as well as other information they believe would reflect negatively on members of the Democratic Party, various Hollywood celebrities, and other purported elites who they believe to be part of a sinister cabal controlling world events. For years, Trump has winked and nodded at such beliefs and had indicated during his 2024 campaign that his administration would release the documents in question if he were victorious in last year's presidential election. Now, as his base revolts over the Justice Department's failure to make good on that promise, he is angrily disavowing those MAGA die-hards. He wrote: 'Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don't even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don't want their support anymore! ' More follows...

Trump slams ‘past supporters' over fixation on Epstein

President Trump on Wednesday admonished and sought to distance himself from supporters who have pressed for more information about documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump dismissed the uproar over the Epstein files as a 'scam' perpetuated by Democrats and suggested he no longer welcomed his backers who have called for more transparency around the documents. 'Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this 'bullshit,' hook, line, and sinker,' Trump posted. 'They haven't learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years. 'I have had more success in 6 months than perhaps any President in our Country's history, and all these people want to talk about, with strong prodding by the Fake News and the success starved Dems, is the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax,' Trump continued. 'Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don't even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don't want their support anymore!' A number of prominent Trump supporters, including members of Congress, have called for the administration to release more information around the Epstein files. Far-right activist Laura Loomer and Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), two staunch Trump allies, are among those who have called for a special counsel to look into the matter. Trump supporters, including some now in the government, have for years espoused conspiracy theories around Epstein's death and suggested the government was covering up information for nefarious reasons. But Trump has in recent days appeared exasperated by the fixation on Epstein. 'I don't understand it, why they would be so interested,' Trump said Tuesday. 'He's been dead for a long time. He was never a big factor in terms of life. I don't understand what the interest and what the fascination is. I really don't. And the credible information has been given.' The Justice Department and FBI issued a joint memo last week that stated Epstein did not have a client list and confirmed he died by suicide in his New York City jail cell in 2019. The findings incensed members of the MAGA movement, who have for years pushed conspiracy theories about Epstein's death and claims that prominent Democrats would be named on a client list. Epstein, accused in several cases of sex trafficking young girls, ran in high-powered circles with figures that included Trump, former President Clinton, Britain's Prince Andrew and a number of other celebrities and ultrawealthy individuals. Epstein's associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, has been convicted of sex trafficking.

Letters to the Editor: Democrats missed the chance to pass immigration reform years ago

To the editor: While some Democrat leaders have been growing a backbone in supporting immigrant communities against the ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids, I could not help but think that so much of the suffering experienced by immigrants today could have been avoided ('Trump officials vow to intensify immigration raids despite legal challenges, bad polls, public backlash,' July 14). Let us never forget that from 2009-2010, the Democrats controlled both the presidency and Congress but failed to pass immigration reform. President Obama's advisors would later state that he was too busy trying to save the U.S. economy. Today, the Democrats sure could use the millions of future voters they might have gotten had they passed immigration reform back then. Indeed, perhaps these millions of new voters might have made the difference for Democrats in 2016 and 2024. Instead, Obama would leave office with the nickname 'deporter-in-chief.'
