A Series of Mysterious Explosions Unnerves Syrians
After rebels ousted President Bashar al-Assad in December, government soldiers fled the small base near Aleppo, Syria's capital, leaving unsecured weapons behind. In the months that followed, children played near the explosives, while shepherds and thieves looking for scrap copper would walk through the base and sometimes tamper with the weaponry, two residents told The New York Times.
'I started hearing a crackling sound from the base and two successive explosions,' Nasr Handawi, a grain merchant and father of nine who lives in al-Nayrab, said of the blast on July 11. It injured 14 people and damaged many homes in the village, according to the provincial government.
'Within two minutes, a fire broke out,' he added. 'I ran down immediately from the second floor to grab my wife and children and escape. Then the explosion happened.'
At least five other mysterious explosions at military bases and weapons storage sites this month have caused deaths and injuries. They have also raised questions about whether large caches of weapons, ammunition and other unexploded ordnance from Syria's 13-year civil war have been properly secured during a transition of power over the past seven months.
On Thursday, another large explosion at a military base hit the town of Maraat Misrin, in the northwestern province of Idlib. At least six people were killed and more than 100 injured, according to the Syrian Civil Defense rescue teams. Rescue efforts were hampered by a series of explosions from the base, which contained weapons and munitions, state news media reported, citing the emergency and disaster management minister, Raed al-Saleh.

US, Israel announce targeted killings of terror leaders in Syria and Lebanon
The U.S. and Israel announced on Friday that their respective forces had killed terror leaders from ISIS and Hezbollah in separate counterterrorism operations. CENTCOM troops carried out a raid in al-Bab, Aleppo Governorate, Syria, and killed senior ISIS leader Dhiya' Zawba Muslih al-Hardani and his two adult sons, who also have ties to the terror organization, according to a statement from CENTCOM. It added that three women and three children who "were also on the target" were unharmed in the raid. "These ISIS individuals posed a threat to U.S. and Coalition Forces, as well as the new Syrian Government," CENTCOM said in a statement. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based organization, said the raid was the first of its kind. The group also stated that ground troops of SDF-backed special units and Damascus special forces participated in the operation, though Fox News Digital was unable to confirm their involvement. Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM commander, vowed U.S. forces would "relentlessly pursue ISIS terrorists." "ISIS terrorists are not safe where they sleep, where they operate and where they hide," Kurilla said in a statement. "Alongside our partners and allies, U.S. Central Command is committed to the enduring defeat of ISIS terrorists that threaten the region, our allies and our homeland." The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced its troops had killed Ali Mohammad Hassan Qoutan, who served as the personnel officer for Hezbollah's Bint Jbeil sector. According to the IDF, Qoutan was involved in efforts to rebuild the organization, which was dealt a blow when Israel killed its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in September 2024. "The terrorist's activities constitute a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon," the IDF wrote in a statement. Israel recently concluded a 12-day war with Iran while simultaneously fighting Hamas in Gaza in a war that has been ongoing since the brutal attacks of Oct. 7, 2023.

Russia's lone aircraft carrier likely to be scrapped or sold, says shipbuilding chief
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia's only aircraft carrier, the 40-year-old Admiral Kuznetsov, is likely to be sold or scrapped, the chairman of Russia's state shipbuilding corporation told the Kommersant newspaper in comments published on Friday. Andrei Kostin's remarks follow a report in the daily Izvestia newspaper earlier this month, which cited unnamed sources as saying long-running refit and maintenance work on the warship had been suspended. Launched in 1985 when the Soviet Union still existed, the Admiral Kuznetsov saw action in Russia's military campaign in Syria in support of then-President Bashar al-Assad, with its planes carrying out airstrikes against rebel forces. But it has played no role in the war in Ukraine and has been out of service since 2017, undergoing modernisation in the Murmansk area close to where Russia's Northern Fleet is based. Efforts to overhaul it have suffered repeated accidents and setbacks. Asked about its fate on Thursday on the sidelines of a flag-raising ceremony for a new nuclear submarine in northwestern Russia, Kostin made it clear that a final decision had not yet been taken, but suggested that the Admiral Kuznetsov was no longer worth spending money on. "We believe there is no point in repairing it anymore. It is over 40-years old, and it is extremely expensive ... I think the issue will be resolved in such a way that it will either be sold or disposed of," Kostin was quoted as saying by Kommersant. Detailed information about the combat readiness of individual warships is regarded as sensitive by Moscow and the Russian Defence Ministry does not comment on such matters. Russian naval veterans and experts are divided on the prospect of the warship being scrapped, with some telling Izvestia it is obsolete, and others saying it or a successor would provide a capability that Russia needs. The aircraft carrier gained notoriety in Britain when then-Secretary of Defence Michael Fallon dubbed it the "ship of shame" in 2017 when it passed close to the English coast on its way back from the Mediterranean belching black smoke.
