Dubai Future Foundation, University of Birmingham Dubai boost AI collaboration - Middle East Business News and Information
Dubai, April 2025: Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) and the University of Birmingham Dubai have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen their strategic partnership in support of Dubai's AI ecosystem, talent development, and national innovation agenda.
The MoU was signed during the inaugral Dubai AI Week, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of DFF.
Signed by Saeed Al Falasi, Excutive Director of the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence, and Professor Yusra Mouzughi, Provost of University of Birmingham Dubai, the agreement outlines a series of initiatives aimed at accelerating research, supporting entrepreneurship, and boosting knowledge.
As part of the agreement, the University of Birmingham Dubai will contribute to DFF's University Entrepreneurship Programme and collaborate on the development of business accelerators and joint foresight research. The partnership will also support the creation of academic content aligned with the UAE's national innovation goals.
The partnership reinforces both institutions' commitment to the Dubai Universal Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence and contributes to the broader goals of the Dubai Research and Development (R&D) and Innovation Programme. It also sets the stage for future participation in DFF's flagship initiatives, such as the Dubai Future Forum and future editions of Dubai AI Week.

Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Director General of the Dubai Government Human Resources Department, commended the productive collaboration among relevant government entities for this venture, which aligns with the objectives of the 'Year of Community' as well as DGHR's vision to establish a cohesive institutional framework that promotes harmony and integration within the government system, ultimately benefiting individuals, institutions, and society. H.E. said: 'The 'Year of Community' represents a national call to strengthen social solidarity and cohesion, while expanding community participation in building a prosperous future. We believe that national talents are key drivers of institutional social change and sustainable development. In line with this vision, we have organised the 'Community Change Lab' initiative to develop innovative, actionable solutions based on community-centric innovation. These include the Policies and Systems pillar, aimed at developing inclusive policies and legislation, empowering all segments of society, specifically employees, people of determination, women, retirees, and job seekers, while ensuring the sustainability of social impact; the Empowerment and Capacity Building pillar for designing training programs, which can enhance the skills of target groups, enabling their effective participation in community initiatives and supporting institutional integration. In addition, the Digital Empowerment and Artificial Intelligence pillar explored the role of digital solutions and AI technologies in delivering innovative services that promote inclusion and stimulate engagement. Meanwhile, the Social Participation and Partnerships pillar focused on boosting cooperation between the public and private sectors, as well as the broader community, to launch innovative ventures which can strengthen social integration, empower women, and support people of determination and retirees through sustainable partnerships. The Community Change Lab served as a unique platform to transform strategic visions into tangible initiatives, aligning with DGHR's innovative approach, which prioritises human capital investment as a means to drive sustainable development. Dubai launches world's first icon classification for Human–Machine Collaboration in research and publications
Classification system sets new standard for transparency in the age of AI-assisted knowledge creation Dubai-United Arab Emirates: Dubai has launched the world's first icon-based classification system to represent the level of human–machine collaboration in the process of producing research, publications, and public-facing content. Developed by the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), the Human–Machine Collaboration (HMC) Icons offer a new global standard for transparency, clearly indicating the extent to which humans and AI worked together throughout the creation process. The classification is free to use, copyrighted for consistency, and openly available for researchers, publishers, and content creators worldwide. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of DFF, said: 'Distinguishing between human and AI-generated content has become a major challenge. That is why we have launched a new framework to define the level of collaboration between humans and machines across all forms of content. 'We invite researchers, writers, publishers, designers, and content creators around the world to adopt this new global classification system,' His Highness added. Unlike existing tools that focus on outputs or authorship, the HMC Icons focus on the process behind the work, from ideation and data analysis to writing, translation, and design. The system applies to academic papers, reports, visual content, and educational materials. The classification system features five core icons representing the degree of human–machine collaboration (from All Human to All Machine), as well as nine functional icons indicating which specific parts of the process a machine has contributed to. They are: ideation, literature review, data collection, data analysis, data interpretation, writing, translation, visuals, and design. By using these icons, institutions and individuals can demonstrate responsible AI use, reinforce human leadership in research production, and foster greater trust in an era increasingly shaped by machine learning tools. The system was developed in response to a question raised in the 2024 edition of Dubai Future Foundation's Global 50 report: 'What if we had a Turing Declaration for human intelligence?' The HMC Icons present Dubai's answer: a practical framework that sets a new benchmark for research integrity and content transparency.
