Harry Potter fans point out one huge flaw with the casting for new HBO series

Daily Mirror28-05-2025
The actors playing Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the new Harry Potter HBO show have been announced as the magical story gets a TV reboot thanks to American broadcaster HBO
The announcement of the lead cast for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter reboot has sparked a wave of excitement from the fandom, but it hasn't come without controversy. As the wizarding world prepares to welcome a new generation of Hogwarts students, some long-time fans are voicing frustration over one major issue.
Harry Potter still doesn't have green eyes. Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as the Boy Who Lived in the new TV adaptation, with Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout playing Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley respectively. The young trio are stepping into the iconic roles that were made famous by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the original eight-film series.

While many were excited to hear the casting announcement, a number of fans took to social media to express their disappointment that once again Harry Potter's most mentioned physical trait in the books has been overlooked.
One fan on Instagram asked: "PS Where's the green-eyed kid for Harry?" Another commented: "Even after 25 years, they couldn't find a kid with green eyes to play Harry."
The criticism stems from the books' constant emphasis on Harry's green eyes, which are supposed to be a key link to his mother, Lily Potter. Many avid fans of the original novels feel that without this detail, certain key scenes don't make sense, such as Snape admitting he is hard on Harry because his eyes remind the professor of his former love.

A third fan hit out: "Physical traits matter. I can't believe we're getting another Harry with brown hair and blue eyes despite the author constantly pointing out his defining features as jet black hair and green eyes."
Someone else who spoke out in defence of Hermione's casting grumbled: "Our boy Harry on the other hand is never gonna get represented properly with black hair and green eyes. Brown and blue are apparently close enough."

The same issue came up during the original films, when Daniel Radcliffe was cast as Harry despite having blue eyes. According to a behind-the-scenes video featuring producer David Heyman, the star initially tried wearing green contact lenses while the first film was being shot, but had an allergic reaction to them and had to give up.
Despite the backlash, JK Rowling has voiced her support for the new cast. She responded to a fan wishing the actors well on social media saying: "All three are wonderful. I couldn't be happier."
As an executive producer on the series, Rowling was reportedly involved in the casting process. The upcoming HBO series is being billed as a "faithful adaptation" of the beloved books, with each season dedicated to a single novel.
Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod have also spoken highly of the cast in a joint statement, saying: "The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen."
They added: "We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there."

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom reps break silence on split after nine-year romance

The representatives for Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have broken their silence following reports in recent weeks that the pair called it time on their nine-year relationship Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have finally broke their silence after a week of swirling speculation that they have called it quits on their nine-year relationship. The couple have seen ups and downs since they first dated in 2016. They went Instagram official in May 2016 when the musician shared a funny photo of herself and Orlando dressed in bathrobes on the steps of the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cannes, France. ‌ They dated for a little over a year before calling it quits in early 2017, but they soon got back together in 2018 and announced their engagement in 2019 before moving in together that same year. Her ring consists of a ruby in the middle surrounded by eight white diamonds in a floral pattern. ‌ Katy and Orlando then took their relationship to the next level and welcomed their daughter, Daisy Dove in August 2020. The pair was last spotted together publicly at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in March 2025. And an expert has pinpointed a telling sign that the couple weren't their usual selves even then, as unearthed snaps show a sad signal from Katy - who looks 'almost unrecognisable'. Their reps have now issued a joint statement following rumours fo their split, USMagazine reports. 'Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on coparenting. They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter with love, stability and mutual respect.' ‌ It comes after Orlando Bloom shared a series of cryptic quotes referring to "darkness" and "loneliness" on July 2. He shared a post by the account @sapienkind which focused on the late Carl Jung, who's considered the founder of analytical psychology. The post included more than a dozen quotes attributed to the psychologist. One quote included in the repost from Orlando was about loneliness. It read: "Loneliness does not come from having no people about one, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to oneself." Whilst another of those featured in the post focused on love and power. That quote read: "Where love rules, there is no will to power, and where power predominates, love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other." "Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness," one quote read. Whilst another read: "Know all the theories, master all the techniques, but as you touch a human soul, be just another human soul."

Love Island star's past racist slurs resurface and fans want her 'off the show'

Just weeks after one Love Island USA cast member was booted off the show for past use of racial slurs, web sleuths have uncovered slurs used by another cast member. Yulissa Escobar, a 27-year-old real estate professional from Miami was booted in just the third day of Season 7, after videos surfaced of her using the N-word in a podcast. After the swift removal of Escobar, many fans are hoping the same will happen with Cierra Ortega, a 25-year-old content creator from Phoenix, who arrived on Day 2. Past Instagram posts have surfaced of her using a racial slur towards Chinese people in two separate instances many years apart. One post from January 2015 showed a snap of her at the top of a mountain, using a version of the slur to describe how she smiles. There was also an Instagram story post from February 2023, showing her getting Botox treatments, again using the slur to describe her smile, and many fans are furious, calling for her immediate removal. One post from January 2015 showed a snap of her at the top of a mountain, using a version of the slur to describe how she smiles. While it remains to be seen if the show's producers will remove her like they removed Escobar, Ortega has already taken a bit hit in regards to her Instagram followers. She has lost over 200K followers in the past 48 hours after the posts first re-surfaced. Ortega was poised to potentially cross the 1 million follower mark at some point during Love Island Season 7, but her follower tally now stands at 709K. While she's currently coupled up with Nic Vansteenberghe as filming continues in Fiji, many are calling for her removal on social media. A new petition calling for her removal was started two days ago, when the Instagram posts first surfaced, which currently has 6,670 verified signatures. One fan - @deannacortes - shared the petition link on X, adding, 'Send Cierra Ortega home,' with the hashtags #racist #LoveIslandUSA #stopasianhate. Another X user - @ShaneAnime1990 - insisted, 'Cierra Ortega used a racist word now we have to cancel her if she did it once she'll do it again.' Cass Rabbit (@cassrabbit) tagged both @LoveIslandUSA and @Peacock in her tweet, which read, 'Get Cierra Ortega off your show. This is now the third time I'm seeing she used the slur for asians. Y'all rightfully kicked off Yulissa for saying the n word, what about Cierra? Or does racism against asians not matter to you guys?' Another X user - @h0td1lfj0hnny - asked, 'Why has cierra not been dropped from the villa,,,, she's f***ing racist using slurs. EXCLUSIVE Emma Watson cosies up to new love interest as they enjoy picnic and painting in an Oxford park - after romance with fellow student Kieran Brown

Emma Watson enjoyed a cosy picnic and painting date with a new male love interest in an Oxford park on Tuesday. The Harry Potter star, 35, was seen sitting on the bank of a lake, with onlookers saying it looked like the pair were enjoying a 'cute date'. Emma, who is studying for a part-time Master's degree at Oxford, opted for a stylish green and white printed dress as she relaxed with her new companion. Last year, Emma was spotted enjoying a romantic date with fellow Oxford student Kieran Brown, with the pair pictured at a pastry shop close to the University, over a year after she split from boyfriend Brandon Green. A passerby who saw Emma with her new date, said the actress was painting with the male companion at Port Meadow country park. Judie Kitchen, 18, spotted the pair as he walked by and said they were laughing and joking between painting each other and eating, seemingly unrecognised by the nearby wild swimmers. Student Judie, from Headington, Oxford, said: 'I saw them for like 40 minutes. They were having a general chat and making each other laugh, which was cute. 'We arrived just after 3.30pm and one of my friends went for a dip in the lake. Once he got out there, they were there. 'My friend is a massive Harry Potter fan, so when he saw her, it was really funny to see his reaction. 'They were painting each other and eating together. It was just a really cute date. 'It looked successful as they were laughing a lot, which was nice to see.' MailOnline has contacted a representative for Emma Watson for comment. In July 2024, Emma was pictured locking eyes with fellow student Kieran while at a bakery in Oxford. Emma, who is doing a part-time Master's degree at Oxford, split from her ex boyfriend Brandon Green, son of controversial business tycoon Sir Philip, in 2023. An onlooker in the pastry shop said the pair had a 'nice vibe' together and that customers didn't appear to recognise her in the shop. They said: 'They were chatting together in the queue, they seemed to have quite a nice vibe. 'I couldn't hear what they were saying, apart from when she ordered - she got an espresso, a cake and a juice, or something similar. 'She didn't seem to try to be hiding herself, she was just queuing with him normally. 'Nobody really reacted to her, but I could see people in the shop recognised her.' Just days earlier, Emma and the man were seen leaning in for a kiss out in the street as she went away for a few days. A source told The Sun: 'She looked incredibly happy - like she didn't have a care in the world. 'Her suitcases were put in the back of a blue Range Rover by her security and she was saying goodbye. 'They were incredibly close - they didn't seem to care who was looking. 'They only had eyes for one another. 'Emma loves Oxford and is here regularly because of her family - but it appears she now has another reason to love the city.' Emma is currently splitting her time between the US and Oxford after signing up for her part-time Masters degree. She only attends a handful of lectures on site - with security in tow - and completes the rest online. Judging by the adoring look she's giving him while leaning on the pastry case, she's decided he's the dish of the day. It comes after Emma split from ex Brandon last year, some time after Christmas - following a 'serious' romance which lasted around 18 months. Both of them met each other's parents and there were holidays including a romantic break in Venice. Brandon had a reputation as a party-lover and previously dated a number of models. He was once caught patting Kate Moss' bottom on holiday in St Barths. It was rumoured that the catalyst for their split was that Emma had some kind of an epiphany connected to her 'Saturn return' and decided that she wanted out of the relationship. In an Instagram post on April 15th to mark her birthday she wrote: 'This is 33. Holy moly. Before 29 I hadn't even heard of a Saturn Return as a concept. Let's just say that now I am well acquainted.' She went on to write about how she had re-evaluated her life and what she did with it, had learned to surf 'badly', ridden horses, done 'a lot of therapy' and 'said goodbye to my Grandma and Grandpa'. She added: 'I cut my thumb nail off on both hands trying to cook for myself and then was only able to do things one-handed for months. 'I felt really sad and really p*ssed off about a lot of things. I learnt more about love and being a woman... It took me three years but I have finally figured out a daily practice and can actually keep it for more than a few days in a row.' On the topic of 'love and being a woman' she didn't confide about the break-up with Brandon, which she kept private, but the news has now leaked out. Watson famously remarked during a period when she was single that she was 'self-partnered' but by more conventional standards she has been a serial monogamist – and serially unlucky in love. An early boyfriend was rugby player Tom Ducker. He was followed by a more serious romance with fellow Oxford University students Will Adamowicz and Matt Janney. She has dated three young tech millionaires, most significantly the entrepreneur William 'Mack' Knight. They split in late 2017 after a two year romance. On the rebound she had a six month love affair with handsome Glee actor Chord Overstreet. They broke up during the summer of 2018. She was then spotted sharing cocktails with tech CEO Brendan Wallace, the is co-founder of a venture capital fund who she may – or may not – be dating again now. By the summer of 2019, she had moved on to another tech millionaire, Brendan Iribe, CEO of Oculus. He was followed by businessman Leo Robinton, with whom she spent two years. In an interview she said: 'The boyfriends or partners I've had have generally made me feel really cherished. They've built me up.' Many may consider Watson very fortunate – thanks to being cast as a child in the Potter films she has more money than she could need and a thriving acting career. But actually she has quite mixed feelings about the fame it brought her and has more than once stepped away from acting. She was cast in the Harry Potter films at nine years old, having been found via the theatre club she attended. She only completed filming the last Potter when she was 20 years old, in June 2010. Sources who remember her from the Potter days say that her lawyer father Chris's influence was paramount, even though she lived with her mother in Oxfordshire. The experience of growing up on Potter was so constricting and so stressful that she was was in two minds about carrying on acting. She felt physically sick when she discovered how much money she had earned from the Potter films. She also seriously considered not renewing her contract to complete the films. When the cast and crew held a wrap party at Harry's Bar after shooting the final set of reshoots around Christmas 2010, she didn't come. She said in 2017: 'It's something I've really wrestled with. I've gone back and I've quizzed my parents. When I was younger, I just did it. I just acted, it was just there. 'I was finding this fame thing was getting to a point of no return. I sensed if this was something I was ever going to step away from it was now or never.' Post-Potter, films have been generally low key, like The Circle, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Bling Ring. It's said that she turned down the La La Land role which brought Emma Stone an Oscar. Her last film was Little Women, released in 2019 and as her recently founded film companies show, her ambitions now lie on the other side of the camera. As she recently said: 'I've often thought, I'm so wrong for this job because I'm too serious.' You can see how Brandon Green, who was raised in Monte Carlo and enjoyed a carefree life of private jets, penthouses and bikini models, perhaps just wasn't quite deep enough for this introspective star. But then, when one person who has everything meets another person who also has everything, maybe they just have nothing to offer each other.
