Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday refuted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's claim that the state was denied its rightful share of funds by the Centre, and said that Rs 3 lakh crore was disbursed to the south Indian state in the last 10 years, which was thrice as much as the UPA government released from 2004 to 2014. The PM said that as many as 11 new medical colleges have also been set up in Tamil Nadu in the last 11 years with the Centre's help. Notably, DMK chief Stalin has been continuously complaining about the Modi government not releasing enough funds for Tamil Nadu. After the Niti Aayog meeting in New Delhi in May, Stalin said that due to a few states not signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Education on the PM Shri scheme, the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan funding was denied. He said that specifically, for the year 2024-2025, nearly Rs 2,200 crore in Union funding was withheld from Tamil Nadu. On Saturday, PM Modi addressed a public rally in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi, where he inaugurated infrastructural projects worth Rs 4,900 crore. PM Modi reached Thoothukudi directly from the Maldives where he completed a two-day state visit and signed a number of key agreements with President Mohamed Muizzu.

Notice to ex-DFO over ‘Irregularities' in construction of eco-huts in Munsyari
Dehradun: A show-cause notice has been issued to Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Vinay Bhargav, current conservator of forests (western circle), for alleged financial irregularities and illegal construction of permanent concrete structures in the ecologically fragile Munsyari region during his tenure as divisional forest officer (DFO), Pithoragarh forest division. The case, reminiscent of the illegal construction at Corbett Tiger Reserve, involves the building of around 10 VIP eco-huts, a growth centre and a dormitory at an altitude of 8,000 ft in the Kumaon Himalayas, in violation of forest regulations. The matter came to light last year during a routine review of ongoing works by the forest department, as part of preparations for a new forest working plan for Pithoragarh. A detailed probe was subsequently conducted by Sanjiv Chaturvedi, chief conservator of forests (working plan), between Aug and Dec 2024. He submitted a two-part, 700-page report to then head of forest force Dhananjai Mohan in Dec 2024 and Jan 2025. In a Dec 24 communication, Chaturvedi termed the construction a "criminal act" under Section 3A of the Forest Conservation Act, entire construction had happened in reserved forests sans ministry's approval. He also flagged suspected embezzlement of Rs 1.63 crore and the unauthorised diversion of about 70% of revenue generated from the eco-huts to a local society, without any govt sanction. According to the report, permanent concrete structures were constructed in the Khaliya Reserved Forest in 2019 without mandatory approvals under Section 2 of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. Chaturvedi wrote: "The gravity of the corruption can be judged from the fact that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Vinay Bhargav, IFS, on Aug 28, 2020, transferring about 70% of the tourism revenue, generated through structures built with large public investment, to a society (Munsyari Eco Vikas Samiti (EDC), Patalthaur Munsyari, Pithoragarh) without any high-level approval. This society was registered only on Sept 4, 2020, after the MoU had been signed. " Citing violations under relevant sections of Forest Conservation Act, Prevention of Corruption Act, IPC and Prevention of Money Laundering Act, Chaturvedi had recommended that the matter be investigated by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate following which state-level proceedings were initiated. The report also alleged the use of shell companies and committees for procurement of construction materials and management of the eco-huts, and noted that the audit covering four financial years was completed in just one day. "It is not possible at all humanly that the audit of salary payments, maintenance revenue, training, etc., for four financial years (i.e., 48 months) could be completed in just one day…a firm from Jaisalmer, thousands of kilometres away from Uttarakhand, was selected for this distorted so-called audit work," said the communication to HoFF. Bhargav had previously faced allegations of financial irregularities during his posting in Narendranagar forest division in 2015 but was exonerated due to 'lack of experience'. Last month, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami approved a probe into the matter. On Friday, principal secretary (forests) R Sudhanshu gave Bhargav 15 days to respond to the findings. A senior forest official said on condition of anonymity, "The officer has been given 15 days to reply. Let's wait for that. The govt will take further steps accordingly." TOI attempted to contact Bhargav for a comment, but he was unreachable.

Why is DMK afraid to conduct a caste census in Tamil Nadu: Anbumani
PMK president Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday asked why the DMK leadership was afraid to conduct a caste survey/census and said that a caste survey/caste census is necessary to uplift communities at the bottom of the pile in the society. On the second day of his Padayatra in Uthiramerur at a public meeting, he said that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin lied in the State Assembly that State government doesn't have the powers to conduct the caste census when Congress governments in Telangana, Karnataka have completed it, Andhra and Odisha are currently doing it and Bihar has done it already. 'Even Panchayat president has the powers to conduct a census/survey to take stock of how many people are living in the village, how many own a bike/car, how many houses have a toilet and so on, according to the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008. CM Stalin should stop lying,' he said. At an earlier public meeting, Dr. Anbumani said that the DMK government had implemented just 60 of the 541 promises made in its election manifesto but misleading the public by claiming that 90% of the promises have been realised. The PMK leader said that he was not undertaking this padayatra to seek votes for his party, but to primarily appeal to the people to reject the DMK.
