Talks planned after Trump said Europe will pay for weapons to Ukraine

The UK and Germany are chairing a meeting Monday to discuss President Donald Trump's plans for NATO allies to provide Ukraine with weapons, a week after the US president said deliveries would arrive in Ukraine within days.
The virtual meeting will be lead by British Defence Secretary John Healey and his German counterpart Boris Pistorius. Healey said US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and NATO leader Mark Rutte, as well as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Gen Alexus Grynkewich, will attend the meeting of Ukraine Defence Contact Group.
The talks come after Russia pounded Ukraine with some 300 drone strikes Saturday, Ukrainian officials said. Moscow continues to intensify its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities, and analysts say the barrages are likely to escalate.
In an shift of tone toward Russia, the US president last week gave Moscow a 50-day deadline to agree to a ceasefire or face tougher sanctions.
Trump's arms plan, announced a week ago, involves European nations sending American weapons to Ukraine via NATO either from existing stockpiles or buying and donating new ones. The US president indicated discussions were partly focused on advanced Patriot air defence systems and said a week ago that deliveries would begin within days.
But last week various senior officials suggested no transfers had yet taken place.
NATO's Grynkewich told The Associated Press on Thursday that preparations are underway for weapons transfers to Ukraine while US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said he couldn't give a time frame.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Thursday that Germany will finance two new Patriot systems for Ukraine and raised the possibility of supplying systems it already owns and having them replaced by the US.
But delivery could take time, Merz suggested because they have to be transported, they have to be set up; that is not a question of hours, it is a question of days, perhaps weeks." Other Patriot systems could come thanks to Switzerland, whose defence ministry said Thursday it was informed by the US Defence Department that it will reprioritize the delivery" of five previously ordered systems to support Ukraine.
While Ukraine waits for Patriots, a senior NATO official said the alliance is still coordinating the delivery of other military aid such as ammunition and artillery rounds which includes aid from the US that was briefly paused. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that his officials have proposed a new round of peace talks this week. Russian state media on Sunday reported that no date has yet been set for the negotiations, but said that Istanbul would likely remain the host city. The Kremlin spokesman said Sunday that Russia is open to peace with Ukraine, but achieving its goals remains a priority.

Pentagon withdraws 700 Marines from LA after month-long deployment

The Pentagon on Monday announced the withdrawal of some 700 active-duty Marines from Los Angeles, ending a month-long deployment aimed at protecting federal property and personnel amid protests triggered by President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement Marines, sent in June against the objections of California Governor Gavin Newsom, were dispatched alongside nearly 4,000 National Guard troops to counter unrest tied to workplace immigration raids carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). A warmer welcome?

More and more Americans now believe immigrants deserve a chance, not handcuffs. America has always been called a melting pot—a place where people from all over the world come to build a better life. But for the past few years, things have been really tough for immigrants, especially those who entered the U.S. without permission. U.S. President Donald Trump made it one of his biggest promises to kick out millions of undocumented immigrants. In fact, he started his second term with a strict plan: 'Come legally or leave.' Some people agreed with him because there is a real problem—over 11 million people were living in the U.S. without proper papers by 2022, and some were even from India. In February, a big plane landed in Amritsar with 104 Indians who had been sent back from the U.S. Even though deportations like these keep happening—about 14,700 every month—Trump's way is seen as especially harsh and loud, often involving handcuffs and shame. But now, something surprising is happening. Many Americans are changing their minds. New polls say most people don't want such harsh punishments anymore. A Gallup survey showed only 38% support mass deportation, down from 47% last year. And 78% of Americans now believe immigrants who've lived peacefully in the U.S. for years should be allowed to become citizens. Why the change? Because people see that most immigrants help—they work hard, follow rules, and add value. A CNN poll showed 55% think Trump has gone too far, and 59% are against jailing people just for being in the U.S. without papers—especially if they've been living there for a long time without causing harm. Even Trump's own political group, the Republicans, is showing a shift: only 48% want less immigration now, compared to 88% last year. This change in attitude gives hope—especially to Indians who've built lives in the U.S. or students dreaming of studying there. If America listens to its people and softens its stance, it could once again be seen as the land of opportunity, not fear. PM: Celebrate ‘Sindoor' success; oppn demands prompt discussion

PM Modi before the Parliament session NEW DELHI: PM Modi on Monday set the tone for the govt's response to the opposition's demand for a discussion on 'Operation Sindoor' and the Pahalgam attack by declaring India's retaliation against terrorist camps deep inside Pakistan a '100% success'. Modi was speaking against the backdrop of the opposition's plans to stage protests in the two Houses as well as the govt agreeing to hold a debate: a rhetorical skirmish which, as per the decision of the business advisory committee, an all-party affair, will pan out for at least 16 hours next week. As soon as the Lok Sabha kicked off proceedings, Congress and its allies demanded that the discussion be held straightaway. Pahalgam debate not set for first week, Cong slams govt Congress also demanded that the Prime Minister personally respond to US President Donald Trump's claim to have leaned on India to get it to negotiate the suspension of Operation Sindoor . In his address, Modi emphasised that the armed forces achieved the success despite him having publicly warned them days by amplifying the intent to 'raze the terrorists to the ground'. 'This monsoon session should be a victory celebration, a vijayotsav (triumph). The entire world has witnessed the strength of Bharat's military capabilities. During Operation Sindoor, the Indian armed forces achieved their objectives with 100% success. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stunning Photographs from History's Most Defining Events Undo Within just 22 minutes, the mission neutralised its target right inside the enemy's territory. I had announced this during a programme in Bihar, and our armed forces accomplished it within a very short time,' the Prime Minister said. Congress members also insisted that leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi be permitted to speak, shouting slogans when he was disallowed by Speaker Om Birla, who said he could do so after question hour. Pleas by defence minister Rajnath Singh and parliamentary affairs Kiren Rijiju that the govt was ready to debate all the issues and that it was for the BAC to work out the date and duration of the debate also failed to cut ice. BJP, for its part, also sent the message that it was not going to chicken out of a fight. As soon as PM Modi entered the Lok Sabha after his media address, BJP and allied MPs greeted him with slogans of 'Operation Sindoor' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai. In his customary remarks to the media on the inaugural day of the session, PM emphasised the global recognition of India's indigenous defence capabilities. 'When I meet world leaders, they express keen interest in Bharat's homegrown defence equipment. A unified voice from Parliament celebrating this victory will inspire our armed forces and boost research, innovation, and manufacturing in the defence sector, creating jobs for our youth,' he said. Reflecting on the atrocities in Pahalgam, Modi praised all-party delegations that exposed Pakistan's role in global terrorism. 'Setting aside party differences, representatives from various states travelled to world capitals, successfully highlighting Pakistan as a hub of terrorism. Their efforts, in the national interest, created a positive atmosphere and opened global doors to India's perspective,' he said. He said the success of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's historic mission was another reason for Parliament to celebrate. Turbulence ahead Congress has slammed the govt for not scheduling the discussion on Pahalgam attack and subsequent events in the first week, and criticised prime minister Narendra Modi for 'not giving importance' to the first session after the dastardly terror attack in J&K. Deputy leader of opposition in LS Gaurav Gogoi said the govt did not put Pahalgam and other issues before the business advisory committee which met on Monday afternoon to decide the business of the lower house. He said the govt did not fix any date or time for the discussion, describing it as 'salt on the wounds of the grieving families'. The opposition continued with its protest on the opening day of the session and forced adjournment of LS even when the House met after the BAC meeting, indicating that it is bent on maintaining pressure, at least for the coming days.
