Zimbabwe's Taylor to return after corruption and drugs ban
The announcement was made during the first day of play in the first Test between Zimbabwe and New Zealand at Queens Sports Club. He will be available for the second Test, starting at the same venue on August 7.
"I certainly did think it was all done, but here I am –- and it's an overwhelming feeling of gratitude," said Taylor, 39.
"The last year and a half has certainly been dedicated to my return. I've put in an immense amount of work -– from fitness to the technical side to diet –- and I'm feeling a lot leaner, fitter and mentally stronger.
"That's only been possible through sobriety."
Taylor was found guilty in January 2022 of four charges under the International Cricket Council's (ICC) anti-corruption code and separately for failing a drugs test.
Taylor admitted to travelling to India in 2019 and meeting an unknown individual who paid him $15,000.
He initially claimed the money was an appearance fee but later admitted that he was paid following discussions about match fixing, which he said he had no intention of carrying out.
He reported his contact with the individual to the ICC in March 2020 but did not mention discussions about corruption. He also deleted all communications with the individual.
He tested positive for a cocaine metabolite in September 2021.
Before the ban, Taylor was one of Zimbabwe's leading batsmen and racked up 2,320 runs in 34 Tests.
He has also played in 205 one-day internationals and 45 Twenty20 internationals.
Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Givemore Makoni welcomed Taylor's return.
"Brendan has endured an incredibly difficult chapter in his life and shown genuine remorse, coupled with a powerful determination to make things right -- not just for himself but for the good of the game in Zimbabwe," said Makoni.

Should there be injury substitutions in Test matches?
England seamer Chris Woakes was ruled out of the remainder of the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval after suffering a shoulder injury on the opening day, the team management announced on Friday. Woakes injured himself late on Thursday's opening day while trying to prevent a boundary. He landed awkwardly near the boundary ropes and immediately held his left shoulder. The seamer left the field with his left arm in a makeshift sling while wincing in pain. On Friday, the England management said Woakes will not take any further part in the match. "England seamer Chris Woakes will continue to be monitored throughout the remainder of the fifth Test at The Kia Oval, following a left shoulder injury sustained on day one of the match against India," an England cricket spokesman said. "At this stage, the injury has ruled him out of any further participation in the Test. "A further assessment will be conducted at the conclusion of the series." India, looking to win the final match and level the Test series 2-2, were 204-6 at Thursday's close after being sent into bat. They were bowled out for 224 early on Friday. Woakes featured in every match of a gruelling series where five Tests have been squeezed into seven weeks. There was a chance of Woakes getting rested for the fifth Test but after Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse were rested due to workload management and captain Ben Stokes ruled out due to shoulder injury, England were forced to ask Woakes to lead an inexperienced attack. Now, they will have to manage without their veteran seamer on a surface tailormade for quicks. In the fourth Test, India wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant broke his foot while attempting a reverse sweep against, coincidentally, Woakes. Pant had trouble standing up but somehow managed to score a fifty in the first innings. He did not take any further part in the match. Dhruv Jurel took up the wicketkeeping gloves and Pant was not required to bat in the second innings as all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar scored unbeaten tons to secure a famous draw. However, the debilitating nature of injuries to Pant and Woakes on the opening day of a Test has resulted in calls for injury substitutions. Currently, teams are allowed to substitute players only in case of concussion or Covid. Former England captain Michael Vaughan has been vehemently urging for injury replacements to be allowed, especially when they are major ones, resulting from external impacts, and in the first innings of a match. In the previous Test, India coach Gautam Gambhir said he was in favour of injury substitutes as without it, the contest turns into 10 v 11. "Absolutely, I'm all for it," Gambhir had said. "If the umpires and the match referee see that is a major injury, I think it's very important. It's very important to have this rule where you can get a substitute - that is, if it's very visible." However, England captain Stokes said he is not in favour of injury substitutes as teams can misuse the provision. "I think it's absolutely ridiculous that there's a conversation around an injury replacement," Stokes said. "I think that there would just be too many loopholes for teams to be able to go through. "If you stick anyone in an MRI scanner, a bowler is going to show, 'oh yeah, you've got a bit of inflammation around your knee; oh sweet, we can get another fresh bowler in'. I just think that conversation should be shut down and stopped." However, with Pant and Woakes's injuries, conversations can be expected to take place about having substitutions for major injuries following external impact in the first innings. More so because every match now can impact a team's standing in the World Test Championship table.

UAE to play Afghanistan and Pakistan in T20 tri-series in Sharjah
Cricket fans in UAE are set for a T20 summer bonanza after it was announced that the national team will host a high-profile tri-series against Pakistan and Afghanistan. The seven-match series will take place at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium from August 29 and run until September 7. The three teams will play each other twice in the six-match group stage. The top two teams will then compete in the final. The tournament is not only an opportunity for an in-form UAE team to test their mettle in the T20 format, but also a chance to prepare for the main event next month – the T20 Asia Cup. The UAE will host the Asia Cup tournament from September 9 where they will compete against the top teams in the format, which in turn serves as a build-up to the T20 World Cup early next year. In the Asia Cup, India and Pakistan are in Group A with Oman and hosts UAE. Group B comprises of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Hong Kong. The top two from each group there will qualify for the Super 4 stage where all four teams will play against each other. The top two teams will then go through to the final which will be held on September 28. Before that, the UAE team will lock horns with two powerhouses of T20 cricket, who have also played a large number of their matches in the UAE over the years. In the tri-series, Afghanistan take on Pakistan in the tournament opener. Match tickets and broadcast details for the tri-series will be announced over the next few days. The UAE are in fine form heading into the T20 tournaments. Under the captaincy of Muhammad Waseem, the national team famously defeated Bangladesh in a T20 series in Sharjah in May. Then, they took part in the Pearls of Africa T20 series in Uganda where they won four out of six matches. Saim Ayub shines with bat and ball as Pakistan defeat West Indies in first T20
Left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz took three wickets in an over while Saim Ayub delivered with bat and ball as Pakistan secured a 14-run win over the West Indies in the first T20 in Florida. Pakistan were looking to make a statement after their recent T20 series defeat in Bangladesh. In the opening match of the three-match T20 series in Lauderhill, the team in green were sent in to bat and posted 178-6, led by Ayub's fine 57 from 38 deliveries which included five fours and two sixes. A total of 200 looked within reach for Pakistan as Ayub and Fakhar Zaman (28) shared an 81-run second-wicket stand, taking the score up to 107 in the 12th over. However, Jason Holder got a vital breakthrough as he trapped Ayub lbw for 57. Recalled fast bowler Shamar Joseph kept the pressure on Pakistan 's batting line-up and returned 3-30 from his four overs as the tourists finished below 180. That total proved to be enough in the end as Pakistan's spinners ran riot. After conceding 20 runs in his first three overs, left-arm spinner Nawaz turned the match on its heads. He started the 12th over with a breakthrough to dismiss Jewel Andrew for 35 and end a 72-run opening stand. He added the wickets of Johnson Charles (35) and Gudakesh Motie (0) on the fourth and fifth balls as the West Indies slumped to 75-3. The Windies had lost all momentum and when captain Shai Hope (2) scooped a full delivery from Ayub into the deep in the next over, the hosts had lost four wickets for five runs. All-rounder and former captain Holder struck four sixes in his unbeaten 12-ball 30 and pacer Joseph hit 21 from 12 to help the hosts get close to the target. But they had too much work to do in the end, finishing on 164-7 to lose by 14 runs. Ayub finished with figures of 2-20 to be named player of the match, while Nawaz picked up 3-23. Defeat ended any chance of the West Indies starting the series against Pakistan on a better footing after comprehensive Test and T20 series losses to Australia. The Australians wrapped up a historic 8-0 sweep in the Caribbean earlier in the week. Pakistan captain Salman Agha said his team read the conditions well. 'We assessed the conditions really well. Started strong and finished even better. We were outstanding in the middle overs and picked up crucial wickets, especially the spinners,' Agha said. 'In the first 10 overs we didn't do too well but we managed to control the game. Once the spinners found grip and turn they bowled brilliantly at that stage.' The second and third T20s will be held in Lauderhill on Saturday and Sunday before an ODI series in the Caribbean.
