Beware of AI energy hyperbole: scientists already have a solution

Scientists from three British universities are together developing an atom-thick graphene chip that slashes energy use for computing and AI data centres by over 90pc, radically changing the trajectory of global electricity demand over the next quarter century.
It promises a future where semiconductors are so energy efficient that we will have to recharge our mobile phones just once a week. A good laptop battery will run for 80 hours.
'We're very confident that we will be able to cut electricity use for computing by 90pc and perhaps even by five times more than that,' said Sir Colin Humphreys, the project leader and professor of materials science at Queen Mary University of London.
'We expect to have a prototype that works by 2029, and we should be manufacturing millions of working devices by 2032-2033,' he said.
Queen Mary has teamed up with the University of Nottingham and the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre at the University of Glasgow, putting together the most advanced collective knowledge on 2D graphene semiconductors on the planet. They are backed by grants from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
'It is very much a global race but we have the world lead in graphene. The Chinese are pouring huge sums into this and have been trying to reproduce our technology but can't yet do it,' said Prof Humphreys.
'They asked me to come to China and more or less said 'name your price'. I declined the offer. The technology has huge military implications,' he said.
If graphene can deliver this quantum jump before the end of the decade, and start rolling it out at scale in the early 2030s, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and the giant hyper-scalers will not need extra fleets of nuclear reactors and gas plants to run their AI data centres.
Shell, BP and the European drilling majors may come to regret their Faustian pivot back to natural gas, a strategy that is in essence one giant bet on AI energy hyperbole.
Russia is the latest country to jump on the data centre bandwagon, eyeing a resurrection play for Gazprom after the loss of 140bn cubic meters of annual pipeline sales to Europe.
Alexei Chekunkov, the minister for the Russian Far East, told the St Petersburg economic forum this week that power-hungry computers could save the industry. 'All this gas is lying unused underground. The question of what to do with it is very urgent, so let's think about it for AI and blockchain generation,' he said.
It was the same talk this spring at the CeraWeek energy conference in Houston, Texas, where it was an article of faith that AI and language learning models will require a vast expansion of fossil-fired power for decades to come, mostly from gas but also from coal if Donald Trump gets his way.
Trump has signed an executive order to ' turbocharge coal mining ', proclaiming that America will need to double electricity output to drive America's AI supremacy. 'We're ending Joe Biden's war on beautiful, clean coal once and for all. All those plants that have been closed are going to be opened,' he said.
We may avert this dystopian disaster after all. The magic lies in the unique properties of graphene, a flat sheet of carbon atoms first isolated in a Nobel prize discovery in Manchester in 2004.
'Graphene conduction electrons don't go through the material like copper and silicon: they glide along the surface like an ice-skater. That is why it is the best conductor in the world,' said Prof Humphreys.
More chips can be packed into a data processing hub, and stacked in layers, without voracious needs for water cooling. 'They are diverting whole rivers in the US to build data centres,' he said.
Google alone used 6bn gallons of water last year to cool its operations. ChatGPT uses half a litre for every 100-word request, and much of this is happening in areas under water-stress.
You can grow graphene by using methane as the raw material. It is plentiful, harmless, and can be entirely home-made. 'There is no dependence on other countries for supplies,' he said.
The technical problem with graphene is that it has no 'band gap', which is what enables semiconductors to switch on and off rapidly. The project has found a way to overcome this by adding layers of indium selenide. This is the secret source.
The research arms of the US army and navy are backing a rival 2D technology at Penn State University using molybdenum disulfide to build a computer. The project published its findings two weeks ago in Nature, which also point to dramatic savings in energy use.
Whoever gets there first, the 80-year age of silicon is over, and so is the old model of TSMC, Intel and the incumbent semiconductor industry. Trying to miniaturise chips down to the frontier of three or two nanometers (nm) is the last expensive gasp of a technology that will be obsolete in a few years.
'This is going to put silicon out of business. We have reached its atomic limits. At the end of the day, it is inefficient and won't be able to compete,' said Prof Humphreys.
I wrote recently about an entirely different approach to AI data centres by the global nanotechnology institute IMEC, which uses superconductors to slash energy use by orders of magnitude.
It involves soaking standard 28nm chips in liquid helium at minus 269C and keeping them cold by cryogenic cooling. This lets you stack chips a hundred layers high for the extreme demands of AI without causing the copper wires to overheat.
In the meantime we face an energy crunch until we get over the hump. AI computing demands are doubling every six months. Typical data centres consumed eight kW per rack three years ago. Nvidia's latest GB200 chip needs 120 kW per rack for training ChatGPT.
Data centres are already consuming 20pc of Ireland's electricity. National Grid expects commercial power demand for British data centres to rise sixfold over the next decade, most of it concentrated around London where it is hardest to deliver extra power.
But wild talk that computing will gobble up half the world's electricity by 2040 is crude extrapolation and likely to prove another Malthusian scare, much like the alarmism four years ago over lithium and critical minerals – before the bubble popped and prices collapsed by 80pc.
There is a problem for some rare earths and strategic minerals but not because they are scarce: it is because the West fell asleep while China locked up the processing industry and the immediate supply chain to gain political leverage. That can and will be fixed.
By the same token, the energy needs of advanced computing will also be fixed, and without requiring a mad dash for coal and gas. Technologists will once again save us from our own incorrigible stupidity.

UK Pride faces a 'critical' funding crisis amid warnings that Donald Trump 's assault on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the US is having a direct impact on firms in Britain. The UK Pride Organisers Network said 75 per cent of Pride events across the UK seen a decline in corporate sponsorships this year, with a quarter experiencing funding drops of more than 50 per cent. Meanwhile, GoFundMe has reported a 'remarkable' 82 per cent increase in organisers resorting to crowdfunding events to bridge the gap in funding. Pride organisers have told The Independent that big corporations who have long sponsored them are 'pulling back their funding in all aspects', especially those with head offices in the US, after Trump issued a series of executive orders targeting diversity programmes in the public and private sectors, with many corporations such as Amazon and Google scaling back their DEI efforts since February. While Pride has grown as a movement across the UK for a decade, Dee Llewellyn, chair of UK Pride Organisers Network and director of partnerships and growth for London Pride, said corporate funding has 'fallen off a cliff', causing a number of events across the country close their doors, including big events such as Liverpool. The situation has led one expert to warn that 'the golden era of corporate sponsorship might be over' for LGBTQ organisers. Mrs Llewellyn fears the LGBTQ community could experience 'five years of difficulty and struggles' as Trump fully implements the DEI cuts, adding 'it is the start of that process now.' 'I think we will see more global brands declining, not because they don't want to participate, but because they don't have the EDI budget to do so,' she added. 'It's not the people on the ground in the UK either, I've had brands that have withdrawn this year that were absolutely devastated to have to do it. 'But they've had their budgets cut from America and there was absolutely nothing they could do to argue or fight that in the UK.' Pride events across the country receive a bulk of funding from big businesses, varying on a scale of a minimum of 50 per cent funding to events like London, where approximately 95 per cent of the funding comes from corporate partnerships. Gary Richardson, an organiser from Worthing Pride whose regional celebrations were almost cancelled this year, said: 'It very much seems if they've got offices overseas, specifically in America, the DEI conversations that are happening there seem to be drip feeding into the economy over here'. John Hyland, former co-chair of Liverpool Pride and the Community Partnerships and Individual Giving Lead for LGBTQ charity Sahir, close supporters of Pride celebrations in the city, echoed Mr Richardson's point: 'When America sneezes, we all catch a cold.' 'Businesses seem to be a bit more reluctant to support LGBT organisations, which is having a massive impact on the likes of Pride,' he added. Pride in Liverpool had to cancel its plans this year due to 'significant financial and organisational challenges, which have impacted timescales and resulted in it reverting to an almost entirely volunteer-led operation.' Organisers severed ties with key sponsor Barclays in May after the bank's boss said it would prohibit Trans women from using female toilets in its buildings following the Supreme Court Ruling which ruled that the terms 'woman' and 'sex' in the 2010 Equality Act 'refer to a biological woman and biological sex'. 'I think definitely in light of what's happened with the Supreme Court ruling, we've had a number of number of transgender community-led protests happen in Liverpool,' said Mr Hyland. 'If there's a year where we need Pride to happen, it's this year and our community has been very vocal about that.' As well as a decrease in corporate sponsorships, organisers have cited that local communities have struggled to fill the financial hole in Pride events planning due to the cost of living. Mr Hyland said that calls for support from local businesses in Liverpool fell through because 'they haven't got that kind of money.' On an average year where it costs around £140,000 to produce Worthing Pride over a weekend, 60 per cent of budgeting comes from sponsorship, while the rest comes from ticket sales. This year, the organisers are aiming for 70 per cent from ticket sales and 30 per cent from sponsors. Instead of receiving support from five to six big sponsors, they've managed to accrue 20 small sponsorships instead, with a number of companies offering pro bono support. Dr Francesca Ammaturo, senior lecturer in in Sociology and International Relations at London Metropolitan University, author of forthcoming book The Politics of Pride Events: Global and Local Challenges, said that while big businesses have taken on Pride as an issue of corporate responsibility, organisers have relied on corporate sponsorship because public funding has not always been accessible to the LGBTQ+ community. 'Pride events have become really dependent on them,' she said. 'Now when you insert the rollback that Trump is enacting on DEI policies, that is sending shockwaves not just across the US, but also across the globe because of globalisation. She added: 'The repercussions for these companies to sponsor pride events even beyond the US could be creating some backlashes at home. 'It's quite difficult for LGBT organisers today to accept that the golden era of corporate sponsorship might be over, at least for now until we realise what is the next political that we will encounter.' Dr Ammaturo added that big business involvement in Pride had always been 'a very superficial commitment' more akin to 'a marriage of convenience which was conducive to a certain veneer of rainbow washing'. Mrs Llewellyn said that despite the radical funding cuts, Pride will persist in the UK, adding: 'It's essential now more than ever, really more than it has been over the past 10 years for us to be able to stand together as a community to have that safe space for us to join together. 'Pride is a protest. That is what it was born and rooted in,' she added. 'We've been through lots of hardships as a community, but when we stand together and we unite our voices, that is when we're strongest.'

Sir Keir Starmer has been put on notice of a fresh Labour rebellion over the Government's 'family farm tax'. More than 40 Labour MPs are said to be considering a bid to water down looming changes to agricultural and business inheritance tax relief. It comes after the Prime Minister performed a trio of embarrassing U-turns in recent weeks. Sir Keir has reversed his position on axing the winter fuel payment for millions of pensioners, a national grooming gangs inquiry, and welfare cuts. This has left Labour rebels feeling emboldened that they can force the Government into further policy changes. According to the Telegraph, a group of Labour backbenchers are considering using amendments to legislation to exempt small family farms from a planned tax raid. At last year's Budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced farmers will pay a 20 per cent rate of inheritance tax on land and property they inherit worth more than £1million. The Government has insisted the measures - dubbed the 'family farm tax' and set to be in place from April 2026 - will only affect the wealthiest quarter of landowners. But the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and others say the impact of Ms Reeves' measures will be much more widespread. Critics claim the move could wipe out family-run farms with tight margins, as they will be forced to sell up in order to pay death duties. There have been months of demonstrations by farmers in response to the Chancellor's tax raid, including tractor protests in Wesminster. A 'rural growth group' of Labour MPs is now proposing the raising of the £1million cut-off point at which estates lose their tax reliefs. They have suggested estates receive full tax relief on the value of agricultural properties up to £10million, 50 per cent to £20million, and nil thereafter. Sam Rushworth, Labour MP for Bishop Auckland, who is a member of the group, told the newspaper they would 'consider what amendments to put down'. Mr Rushworth said: 'We are all keen to avoid amendments. I don't want it to get to that point. I am a Labour MP and I broadly support the Government. 'I would like to see them bring forward different recommendations in the Bill.' Ex-Cabinet minister Louise Haigh, who was a leading rebel over the Government's now partially-reversed welfare cuts, has called for Sir Keir to 'reset' his relationship with the British public. 'I think this is a moment and an opportunity to reset the Government's relationship with the British public and to move forward, to adopt a different approach to our economic policy and our political strategy,' she told the BBC in the wake of the PM's climbdown on welfare changes. 'And I think that has been accepted from within government and a lot of people, both in the parliamentary Labour Party, but crucially, the country will really welcome that.' The Government's original welfare package had restricted eligibility for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which is the main disability payment in England. It also cut the health-related element of Universal Credit. But, after Sir Keir offered concessions to rebel MPs, the changes to PIP will now only be implemented in November 2026 and apply to new claimants only. All existing recipients of the health element of Universal Credit will also have their incomes protected in real terms. A Government spokesman said: 'Our reforms to agricultural and business property relief are vital to fix the public services we all rely on. 'Three quarters of estates will continue to pay no inheritance tax at all, while the remaining quarter will pay half the inheritance tax that most people pay, and payments can be spread over 10 years, interest-free. 'We're investing billions of pounds in sustainable food production and nature's recovery, slashing costs for food producers to export to the EU and have appointed former NFU president Baroness Minette Batters to advise on reforms to boost farmers profits.'

Wise (formerly TransferWise) has quietly become one of fintech's biggest success stories, transforming how people and businesses send money across borders. From humble startup origins in 2011, Wise now moves over £145 billion internationally each year for 15+ million customers – at a fraction of the cost charged by banks. In doing so, Wise saved its users an estimated £2 billion in fees in FY2025 alone. It's a rare fintech that's both fast-growing and profitable, pursuing a bold mission encapsulated in its slogan: 'Money without borders – instant, convenient, transparent and eventually free.' This deep dive explores why Wise matters today – covering the massive market it's tackling, its journey and products, the technology and regulatory infrastructure under its hood, its recent financial performance, competitive landscape, and what customers and leadership are saying. A Massive Market Ripe for Disruption Moving money internationally has long been notorious for high costs and hassle. Over £22 trillion crosses borders each year, projected to reach £28 trillion by 2027 as globalization drives more migration, remote work, and global commerce. By Wise's own 2025 estimate, the number may be as high as £32 trillion annually. Historically, this market was dominated by big banks and legacy remittance providers relying on an antiquated correspondent banking network. International transfers often meant 'expensive, slow and inefficient service, reliant on outdated infrastructure,' as Wise's 2023 report bluntly puts it. Banks and incumbents like Western Union layered on fees and hidden exchange rate markups – profiting from customers' lack of transparency. The result: sending money abroad could cost 5-8% in fees (often not obvious upfront) and take days to arrive. Wise was founded to change this status quo. Its vision of 'Money Without Borders' is about making moving money 'as cheap, fast, and convenient as sending an email,' in the words of its co-founder. Wise's core innovation was using technology and clever account structures to eliminate intermediaries and hidden fees, giving users the real mid-market exchange rate and charging only a low upfront fee. As we'll see, this strategy is forcing the industry to evolve. Today, many fintechs and even banks are racing to offer cheaper, easier cross-border payments – yet traditional banks remain Wise's primary competitors, still handling the majority of cross-currency transactions. A growing field of digital challengers (from neobanks like Revolut to PayPal's Xoom and others) are also carving out niches. But Wise has a head start in scale, efficiency, and trust – built over a decade of singular focus on solving this problem. From Startup to Public Company Wise's origin story is a personal one. In 2011, two Estonian friends living in London – Kristo Käärmann and Taavet Hinrikus – grew frustrated with the 'massive problem' of bank fees on international transfers. They started TransferWise that year to help people send money abroad at the true exchange rate. The concept resonated: by 2014, having raised a $58 million Series C to expand globally, TransferWise launched in the US and Australia. The company hit major milestones quickly. It reached its first £1 billion transferred (cumulative) in 2014, and by 2017 was profitable with over £1 billion being moved every month through its platform – a rarity in fintech. Importantly, Wise also became an innovator in financial infrastructure early on. In 2016 it gained direct access to the UK's Faster Payments network (the first tech company to do so), showing a knack for working with regulators to improve speed and cost. Over time, TransferWise broadened its offerings beyond person-to-person remittances. In 2016 it launched its first business accounts for SMEs to send money internationally on better terms. By 2018 it rolled out a borderless multi-currency account and debit Mastercard, enabling customers to hold money in multiple currencies and spend it via card in different countries with low fees. The company's global footprint also expanded: it opened offices around the world (10 offices by 2019, including a European hub in Belgium to navigate Brexit) and set up an Asia-Pacific hub in Singapore in 2017. In 2021, reflecting its broadened mission, TransferWise rebranded to 'Wise.' That same year, Wise went public via a direct listing on the London Stock Exchange – notably, London's largest tech listing ever at the time. The listing valued Wise at ~$11 billion, signaling its arrival as a major fintech player. Today, Wise is truly international: over 6,500 employees ('Wisers') across 20+ offices serve customers in 170+ countries. Yet the company insists it's 'still solving only a fraction of the problem'. As CEO Kristo Käärmann wrote, 'Twelve years ago we set out to solve the massive problem people and businesses face in sending money around the world… While we're nowhere near mission complete, 16 million people and businesses are now helping us get closer every day.'
