Minor Hotels' Middle East and Africa expansion: insights from Amir Golbarg

Minor Hotels' Middle East and Africa operations are accelerating. Amir Golbarg, SVP, outlines the group's sustainability strategies, master brand approach, and hyper-growth plans across hospitality markets.
Minor Hotels' Middle East and Africa expansion is reshaping hospitality landscapes. At Arabian Travel Market 2025 in Dubai, Amir Golbarg, Senior Vice President (SVP) of Operations for Middle East & Africa at Minor Hotels, shared insights into the group's remarkable journey, sustainability commitments, and growth strategies. Minor Hotels' Middle East and Africa expansion has been a deliberate and highly strategic endeavor, grounded in sustainability, innovation, and the group's Thai heritage.
Founded in 1967 by William Heinecke, Minor Hotels started with humble roots in Thailand and has since evolved into a major international player. Its Middle East journey began in 2012 with the unique project on Sir Bani Yas Island, UAE, where Minor launched three distinct resorts blending wildlife conservation and luxury hospitality. As Golbarg explained, 'Today we operate 54 properties across the Middle East and Africa, with many more in the pipeline — all designed to reflect local cultures while upholding Minor's global standards.'
Sustainability as core DNA
Golbarg emphasized that sustainability is not just a marketing buzzword but a fundamental part of Minor Hotels' operations. 'Our Anantara brand, launched in 2001, was built on the idea of indigenous sustainable luxury,' he said. From sourcing local materials in Jaipur to protecting black rhinos in Zimbabwe, Minor Hotels' Middle East and Africa expansion integrates environmental and social responsibility. With targets certified under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), participation in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, and a focus on reducing landfill waste, Minor's operations prioritize local sourcing, waste reduction, and energy efficiency.
Master brand strategy for seamless customer experience
A major milestone in Minor Hotels' Middle East and Africa expansion is the rollout of its 'master brand' strategy. As Golbarg explained, consolidating eight distinct brands (including Anantara, Avani, and NH) under the Minor Hotels umbrella enhances customer experience by unifying booking systems, loyalty programs, and digital platforms. 'This shift allows guests to seamlessly access offerings across all brands, using one loyalty system and benefiting from hyper-personalized service,' Golbarg noted.
Technology and hyper-growth vision
Addressing the role of artificial intelligence, Golbarg stressed its value for backend efficiencies, data analysis, and customer insights, but not as a front-of-house replacement.
'We believe hospitality is ultimately about human connection,' he said.
Looking ahead, Minor Hotels' Middle East and Africa expansion aims for hyper-growth, with ambitious plans to double the regional footprint within three years. This includes innovations in wellness, longevity hubs, and enhanced F&B concepts, ensuring the group stays ahead of evolving consumer demands.
Minor Hotels' Middle East and Africa expansion offers a compelling case study of how heritage, sustainability, brand consolidation, and technology can drive growth in dynamic markets. As Golbarg concluded, 'We have the ingredients and the recipe — now it's time to run for it.'

Austria Center Vienna reports strong year for events in 2024

Vienna ranked top global congress city in 2024, with Austria Center Vienna hosting 60 events and advancing sustainability, modernisation, and workplace excellence. In 2024, Vienna was named the world's top congress destination in the ICCA ranking. Austria's largest congress centre played a significant role in this achievement, hosting 60 events with around 130,000 attendees, marking a highly successful year for the venue. Total revenue from events amounted to 15.4 million euros. 'We are very pleased to see that Vienna's status as the top global congress capital was reaffirmed in 2024. Conducted at regular intervals over recent years, studies show that every fourth or fifth participant at an association congress in Vienna visits the Austria Center Vienna. And to help maintain our position as an international hub for innovation, science, and sustainability, we have been steadily modernising the location over the course of the past decade. We are pleased to be in a position to celebrate this success with all of our partners in Vienna,' says Susanne Baumann-Söllner, Managing Director of the Austria Center Vienna. Level -2 modernisation project run in parallel with everyday operations Level -2 was unavailable throughout 2024 while a full modernisation project was carried out, in preparation for its official reopening in spring 2025. As expected, this led to a decline in revenue from events including partner commissions, with the annual total down 16% to 15.4 million euros from the 18.4 million euros reported in the record-breaking previous year. The total of 60 events held in 2024 attracted around 130,000 participants, evenly split between national and international events. Eighteen international events each drew over 1,000 attendees, with highlights including the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) and the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), each hosting around 19,000 participants, as well as major corporate events such as the SIXT World Conference and HPE Tech Jam. Solar energy for Austria's first green conference centre In 2014, the Austria Center Vienna became the nation's first Green Conference Centre. Organisers have access to a free sustainability consultation and certification for Green Meetings and Green Events. In 2024, 15 events took advantage of this offering. Following a greening initiative for the terraces and the main square outside the venue, the Austria Center Vienna is already working on the next phase. Michael Rotter, Board Member for Building and Property Management, explains: 'As part of our extensive modernisation programme, we are focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energy. From autumn 2025, a large photovoltaic system on the main roof will cover our electricity needs, marking a key milestone.' In addition to operating the Austria Center Vienna, IAKW-AG is also responsible for maintaining the Vienna International Centre. Since 2021, under a partnership with Wien Energie, waste heat from the cooling system has been fed into the district heating network, supplying heat to around 2,000 households. Austria Center Vienna officially one of the nation's top employers Officially granting the Austria Center Vienna 'Best Workplaces Austria 2025' status, the recent Great Place to Work ranking is another highly encouraging development. Over recent years, the Austria Center Vienna has introduced numerous measures in this area. Among the employee benefits are annual public transport passes, meal subsidies, and a free gym. It also supports remote working and enables parents, including those in leadership roles, to work part-time. For the Austria Center Vienna, having a high proportion of women in managemen positions is a given. Other areas that set it apart include a diverse team working in a wide range of roles, as well as the very close cooperation between the event management and technology, sales and marketing, facility management and construction engineering departments.

H&H adds Eden House Za'abeel in DIFC to Eden House portfolio

H&H launches Eden House Za'abeel in DIFC, expanding its luxury portfolio with wellness-focused residences and refined design by DXB Lab and Tristan Auer. H&H, one of the pioneers in Dubai's real estate market with bespoke turnkey developments, expands the group's flagship Eden House brand with the launch of its Eden House Za'abeel project in DIFC, Dubai. Eden House Za'abeel, conceptualised by DXB Lab and Tristan Auer, represents a pivotal new phase in the brand's growth strategy, and demonstrates its commitment to exceptional design and craftsmanship. The latest launch highlights the Eden House portfolio's expansion and resounding success in Dubai's upscale real estate market, particularly within the highly popular DIFC district's limited residential offerings. The project features a curated collection of high-end apartments, consisting of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, along with a limited number of penthouses featuring spacious layouts, exquisite finishes, and a wrap-around balcony. The development prioritises wellness and comfort with its diverse range of wellness amenities, such as a wellness courtyard, indoor wellness lounge, fitness facility, movement studio, spa suite with a sauna and steam room. Additionally, the project promotes a sense of community with its residents' lounge, multiple courtyards, food and beverage venues, café, outdoor and indoor swimming pools, and a business suite, among other offerings and amenities. Miltos Bosinis, CEO of H&H, commented, 'The launch of Eden House Za'abeel in DIFC reflects our commitment to excellence through exceptional design and meticulous craftsmanship. Our latest addition to the Eden House portfolio, located between Za'abeel and DIFC, is an extension of the brand's growing property portfolio in Dubai. With easy access to global financial institutions, fine dining, retail outlets, and other cultural attractions, the project functions as an integral hub for the local community. We also commend the shared vision of DXB Lab and Tristan Auer, whose collaboration refined the structure into an ideal setting that offers residents a serene and sophisticated living experience.' Centrally located in the DIFC district, the development's main entrance on the Za'abeel side ensures easy access while offering a unique setting that prioritises serenity, privacy, and a welcome escape from the city's bustle. This project reflects the DNA of Eden House, seamlessly blending with the vibrance of DIFC to create a living environment that is both tranquil and dynamic for its residents. The design develops with elegant, curvilinear gestures that blend in with the surroundings, taking inspiration from the site's native Ghaf groves, which became part of the landscape scheme of this development. This is reflected in the carefully considered design elements — from the textured concrete façade and cascading greenery to the rhythmic grid of balconies with elegantly curved handrails — all contributing to a striking balance between urban sophistication and simplicity. The interiors, envisioned by Tristan Auer, extend this combination of design and nature, harmonising bold forms with softer ornamental details. H&H has been at the forefront of Dubai's real estate industry, delivering high-end, sophisticated developments encompassing a vast portfolio of branded residences, hospitality, commercial, and retail projects. Eden House is testimony to H&H's vision of redefining modern living through projects that adhere to the highest standards of excellence, backed by contemporary design. With its latest launch in DIFC, H&H reaffirms its commitment to developing spaces that maximise value and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
