Forbes2 days ago
In case you missed Thursday's NYT Mini Crossword puzzle, you can find the answers here:
It's not only the last day of the work week, it's the first day of August. Happy August, Crosswordlers! The last full month of summer is here, so make the most of it. It's also pretty much the weekend, or very nearly. We really should consider moving to a 4-day work week and a 3-day weekend, not that it matters to me much anymore. I work every day! But when you love your job, that's not such a bad thing. In any case, it's time to solve this Mini Crossword. I'm off the rotation for a couple weeks, but I'll see you mid-August!
The NYT Mini is a smaller, quicker, more digestible, bite-sized version of the larger and more challenging NYT Crossword, and unlike its larger sibling, it's free-to-play without a subscription to The New York Times. You can play it on the web or the app, though you'll need the app to tackle the archive.
Spoilers ahead!
Before we get to the answers, here's the first letter for each word in today's Mini.

Okay, onto the answers! Remember, spoilers ahead!
Across
1A. Arm-y greeting – HUG
4A. Undiluted … or a country with its vowels swapped – PURE
5A. Ballroom dance … or a country with its vowels swapped – TANGO
6A. Played a role – ACTED
7A. Eisenberg of 'The Social Network' – JESSE
Down
1D. Ketchup brand – HEINZ
2D. Eggs on – URGES
3D. Crystal-lined rock – GEODE
4D. Marathoner's concern – EXERTION
5D. ___ Mahal – TAJ
This one threw me off. Or, rather, my brain just turned upside down. I read 4 and 5 Across backwards, basically, and entered PERU and TONGA instead of PURE and TANGO. Silly me. It's late, I'm tired. What can I say? Once I'd fixed that, however, I was able to get the rest fairly easily. This one took me 1:38.
How did you do? Let me know on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.
If you also play Wordle, I write guides about that as well. You can find those and all my TV guides, reviews and much more here on my blog. Thanks for reading!

Bill Maher Knows Trump's Losing 'Credibility' When These Supporters Smell ‘Bulls**t'

Bill Maher weighed in on President Donald Trump losing control over a particular section of his MAGA fanbase amid the Jeffrey Epstein scandal during his Friday night opening monologue on 'Real Time With Bill Maher.' 'The interesting part of this is that Trump's QAnon base, who are always about the pedophiles — oh boy, are they serious about the pedophiles — they may be turning on Trump on this one,' Maher said. 'They really wanna see what's in these files.' Trump and his administration have been embroiled in controversy and backlash from his supporters for weeks following the Department of Justice's memo stating Epstein died by suicide in prisonand did not have a so-called 'client list.' 'Trump was hyping the Epstein files for so long. This was the conspiracy that we had to get to the bottom of, and now his horrible creation has turned on him,' Maher said. 'It's like if Elon Musk got run over by a Cybertruck.' For weeks, the president has provided conflicting information about his friendship with Epstein during his attempts to distance himself from the disgraced financier and sex trafficker. On Friday, Maher suggested the president knows he's losing 'credibility' when even his QAnon supporters, 'the people who believe in chemtrails and Jewish space lasers and [that] the Democrats eat babies,' are turning on him. 'When that crowd says, 'I smell bullshit,' you're in trouble,' Maher told a laughing audience. Related... Country music and Grand Ole Opry icon Jeannie Seely dies at 85

Country music legend Jeannie Seely – who broke new ground and shattered glass ceilings in the genre – has died in hospice care. Her rep Don Murry Grubbs confirmed the news Friday, Aug. 1 to The Tennessean, a part of the USA TODAY Network. The country soul singer appeared on the Grand Ole Opry radio program more times than any other performer and was the first singer to record a live album on the Opry stage. "I feel very fortunate to be part of the Opry tradition and I truly am indebted to all the wonderful fans who have supported me over the years," Seely once said, according to Her record for Opry appearances stands at 5,397 followed by Bill Anderson. Raised on a farm in Pennsylvania, she performed on local radio and television shows as a child and made her own breaks in the music business. Dolly Parton's new Nashville hotel: Music venues, hologram, museum, actual Cup of Ambition Later, in the early 1960s, she moved to Los Angeles, and worked for a time at a Beverly Hills bank. Seely was so determined to get into the music business that she took a job as a secretary at a record company. As a secretary, she started writing songs. Seely worked with seven-time Grammy winner Randy Newman – a mainstay in the music industry – to finish her first song, "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)" which became a hit for blues singer Irma Thomas. She co-wrote songs with Glen Campbell ("Senses") and wrote another song ("It Just Takes Practice") that was recorded by Dottie West. She toured in the western United States in 1964-65 and met Hank Cochran, the country music star from Mississippi who became her first husband. Later, moved to Nashville for good in 1965, and she first appeared on the Opry stage in 1966. Seely later told The Tennessean that "every emotion a person could feel was going through my mind and body, from nerves to sheer terror" during that first Opry performance. How Jeannie Sealy's miniskirt made country music history In 1968, a record year arrived for Seely: she became a full-time Opry member and won the third Grammy ever for best female country performance. The same year, Seely shocked the country music world, known for its traditional values, when she appeared on the Grand Ole Opry stage in a miniskirt. "The relevance of that miniskirt was that I got away with wearing what my choice was," Seely told The Tennessean. "It didn't mean that all the other girls could wear a miniskirt. When I did that and got away with it, they were allowed to ... wear whatever they wanted to wear." Jeannie Seely at 80: Opry trailblazer releases new music with a little help from her friends Her trailblazing didn't end with her wardrobe choices. In the 1960s and '70s, women were not allowed to host the Grand Ole Opry show. Seely would often ask: 'Did you ever notice how much that smells like discrimination?" And she became so popular, she got cast on "The Porter Wagoner Show," a musical variety program. When Seely left the show to tour the country, she was replaced by Dolly Parton. In 1977, she survived a serious car accident that broke her jaw and ribs when she crashed into a tree in Tennessee. Another Grand Ole Opry barrier broken for Jeannie Sealy In 1985, Seely became the first woman to host a half-hour segment of the Grand Ole Opry. "That was a hard-won battle. That wasn't just given to me,' she said, later adding, 'that was a door that I kicked in incessantly to get open." After her hosting gig, there was a flood of women who hosted. Dollywood is 40 years old, and Dolly Parton says it's time to visit "When I saw Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis, that era come up — they were able to walk out there (and) host a segment without that pressure, that stigma," Seely said. "I'm very proud of that." Through the years, Seely worked with seemingly every luminary in country music. She wrote songs for Ernest Tubb and Merle Haggard. She produced an album by Little Jimmy Dickens. She sang duets with Jack Greene and Willie Nelson. Seely tried acting, too, and made a cameo in the 1980 film "Honeysuckle Rose" which starred Nelson. She divorced her ex-husband Cochran in 1979 and married Nashville lawyer Gene Ward, who died last year, in 2010. Jeannie Sealy's 2025: Two abdominal surgeries, a bout with pneumonia Earlier this year, Seely underwent surgery on her back and suffered through complications that required more surgery. She had abdominal surgery in April. Then, she caught pneumonia. Seely wrote a blog post in May on her website, "Jeannie Seely Miss Country Soul." "Over the past several weeks, I've received so many wonderful messages of love and concern about being missed on the Grand Ole Opry and on 'Sundays with Seely' on Willie's Roadhouse," she told fans. "Thank you for those, and I assure you that I miss you just as much!" Sunny Sweeney honors Jeannie Seely at Grand Ole Opry: 'Our North Star has passed' Seely hoped that she could "count on that support as I struggle through this recovery process," revealing that she had multiple back surgeries in March, two emergency abdominal surgeries in April and then 11 days in the intensive care unit plus a bout with pneumonia. "Rehab is pretty tough but each day is looking brighter and last night, I saw a light at the end of the tunnel. And it was neon, so I knew it was mine! The unsinkable Seely is working her way back." In Nashville and beyond, the unsinkable Seely – who lifted all boats – will be remembered always. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Country musician legend Jeannie Seely dies at 85

And Just Like That…: Here's What We Want to See for Each Character Before the Show Ends

Pour us another round of cosmos, because we're preparing ourselves to say goodbye to the ladies of And Just Like That. HBO Max's Sex and the City sequel series is officially ending after three seasons — which means we only have two episodes left with Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and the rest of the gang. (The series finale airs Thursday, Aug. 14 at 9/8c.) And there are plenty of loose plot threads still hanging out there, so showrunner Michael Patrick King and the writers will have to work hard to come up with a pair of final episodes that will wrap everything up in a nice, chic bow. More from TVLine Sarah Jessica Parker and Her Co-Stars Offer Emotional Tributes as And Just Like That Reveals End Date And Just Like That... Shocker: Sex and the City Revival to End With Season 3 at HBO Max And Just Like That: Carrie Gets Closer to Duncan - But Is It Too Close? So we here at TVLine thought we'd do some of the heavy lifting for them. (As longtime Sex and the City fans, we feel certain we're qualified.) Below, we've laid out exactly what we need to see from each major character on And Just Like That before the curtain falls for good — and that includes the return of a few familiar faces from the past. Read on to see our wish list for And Just Like That's farewell, and then hit the comments to tell us what you want to see in the final two episodes. Carrie She already said goodbye to Aidan, so we don't have to worry about her making that mistake again. And she does have solid chemistry with her fellow writer Duncan. We're most excited, though, about her new journey as a novelist. So we'd love it if Carrie's new book became a sensation and took her to London, where she could cozy up with Duncan — and also reunite with a certain someone… Samantha Hello, fabulous! The fact that Duncan lives in London gives And Just Like That the perfect excuse to bring back fellow London resident Samantha for a much-needed reunion. It just wasn't the same without Samantha Jones around, and a Kim Cattrall cameo in the finale (however brief) would help it feel like a proper send-off — not just to this show but to Sex and the City, too. Miranda We've been liking her low-key romance with Joy so far — a lot more than her volatile hook-up with Che, anyway — and we wouldn't mind seeing those two get a happy ending. But we still have a soft spot for Steve: It'd be nice to see him and Miranda mend fences and spend some time together with Brady as a family before And Just Like That signs off for good. (And no, yelling at Brady for getting a girl pregnant doesn't count.) Charlotte Yes, we're happy her husband Harry is cancer-free, and Charlotte seems content balancing her work at the art gallery with her life at home being a mom. But mostly, we want to see Charlotte step into the spotlight a little more in the final two episodes and push for her own happiness, rather than just being a dutiful housewife or a supportive shoulder for Carrie to cry on. This woman has feelings, too! We've known that since way back in the Sex and the City days, and we'd like to see a little of that old sparkle again. Seema Seema is the most compelling new character And Just Like That gave us, so it's a shame that we have to say goodbye to her so soon. But we're enjoying the unlikely romance she's having with landscaper Adam, and we'd love to see that love, um, bloom in the final two episodes. Plus, she needs to sign a big client and get her new firm on track. Lisa Michelle Obama needs to show up and make a cameo in the final two episodes, if only to justify all the talk about her being a part of Lisa's long-gestating documentary. And no, we don't need to see Lisa have a fling with her editor Marion. She's too dedicated to her family to do anything that impulsive. Anthony He already has his happily-ever-after all sewn up with that Italian stallion Giuseppe, so we just need mom Patti LuPone's approval to seal the deal. But it would be nice to see the show acknowledge his ex (and Carrie's bestie) Stanford, played by the late Willie Garson, one more time before it signs off. Nya Hey, remember her? After two seasons as Miranda's professor pal, Nya dropped off the radar completely in Season 3, so we'd love to see her at least pop in to say hi and get some closure in the final two episodes. Che And as for seeing Miranda's regrettable ex again? Nah, we're good. Let us know what you want to see in the final two episodes with a comment below!
