‘Nobody cared about Madhuri Dixit; her parents told her to quit films and get married to a singer, but even he rejected her': Raza Murad

Indian Express2 days ago
Madhuri Dixit was one of the biggest stars of the 1990s, but her early slate of films didn't get much attention. In fact, they flopped so terribly that her parents even considered getting her married. Madhuri wouldn't have been the star that she became had the person her parents approached to marry her said yes. But he rejected the offer, and Madhuri was eventually spotted by director Subhash Ghai in a chance encounter. He re-launched her with the film Ram Lakhan, a year after she gained appreciation for her role in Tezaab. This was the late 1980s.
In an interview, veteran actor Raza Murad spoke about the importance of luck in a performer's life. He cited the example of Amitabh Bachchan, who also had a string of flops behind him before he broke out with the film Zanjeer in the early 1970s. He then spoke about Madhuri. 'She was doing insignificant films like Abodh and Awara Baap. Nobody cared for her, nobody noticed her. Her parents decided to get her married, because her career was at rock bottom. They approached a playback singer, and arranged a meeting between them. He looked at her and said, 'She's too thin'.'

Murad continued, 'Some time later, she was filming in Kashmir with Rajesh Khanna. Close by, Subhash Ghai was also at work. Her hairdresser went to meet him, and he asked what film she was working on. She introduced him to Madhuri, and he was immediately struck by her appearance. He asked her to meet him in Mumbai, and re-launched her because he had a good sense. Otherwise, it was basically pack-up time for her.'
Appearing on the singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in 2023, singer Suresh Wadkar seemed to admit that he was the person who rejected an offer to marry Madhuri. When host Aditya Narayan asked him about a certain rumour around a very popular actor's parents approaching him with an offer to marry her, he blushed and looked at his wife, who was sitting next to him. He said that he is very content in life, and very glad that he found a 'madhuri named Padma'. This seemed to be confirmation enough for the panel of judges, including Anu Malik and Himesh Reshammiya, who expressed shock.
Madhuri married US-based cardiovascular surgeon Sriram Nene in 1999, and quit the films for a few years when she moved to Denver to raise a family. She returned in the mid-2000s with Dr Nene and their two sons, who are now studying in college. Madhuri herself is a prominent fixture on singing reality shows, and Suresh Wadkar admitted that he might get told off one day for what he said on national TV.

Meet actor, who was thrown out of a film after 16 flops, then one movie changed his life, became superstar, his net worth is Rs 1,600 crore; He is...

Amitabh Bachchan's ascent to superstardom rarely happened. After being dropped from Duniya Ka Mela and watching 16 films fail at the box office, the industry had counted him out. But, as Raza Murad notes, 'When the luck was in his favour, everything fell in place.' A lost opportunity for legends Before Zanjeer, Prakash Mehra offered the film to titans like Dilip Kumar, Dharmendra, Dev Anand, and Rajkumar—all declined. The movie's heavy focus on one man scared them away. It took a recommendation from Jaya Bachchan (then Bhaduri) for Prakash Mehra to finally take a chance on Amitabh—and history was made. In his chat with The Filmy Charcha, Murad remained adamant: 'You need 90% luck to succeed in the industry.' The right script meets the right actor—it's rarely just hard work that gets the throne. Zanjeer's enduring legacy For those of you who don't know, Zanjeer was more than a career revival—it was a cultural shift. It introduced a gritty Vijay, an honest cop driven by his past. It also elevated the Salim-Javed duo into legend and cemented Pran's charismatic Sher Khan, especially with unforgettable lines like 'Yeh police station hai, tumhare baap ka ghar nahin.' Salim-Javed's writing paired with Mehra's direction created a masterpiece. A hero forged from desperation, Vijay's journey from haunted soul to righteous crusader resonated deeply. Sher Khan's legacy—in his Pathani attire and principled presence—left a permanent mark on popular culture. Zanjeer wasn't just Amitabh's resurgence—it was the moment Bollywood transformed. A showcase of how fate can pivot entire careers, this film still stands as proof that sometimes, success is born from surviving and seizing rare opportunities. Amitabh Bachchan's net worth According to several media reports, today, his estimated net worth stands at a staggering Rs 1,600 crore (USD 190 million approx), making him one of India's wealthiest film icons.

'She's too thin': Meet the singer who supposedly turned down marriage proposal from Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri Dixit , who later became one of the most celebrated actresses of the 1990s, didn't begin her cinematic journey with instant success. According to veteran actor Raza Murad, her early days in the film industry were marked by a series of underwhelming performances at the box office. Projects like Abodh and Awara Baap failed to gain traction, and her talent remained unnoticed. As the chances of her achieving stardom seemed dim, her parents reportedly began exploring marriage proposals, believing her film career had hit a dead end. "She was doing insignificant films like Abodh and Awara Baap. Nobody cared for her; nobody noticed her. Her parents decided to get her married because her career was at rock bottom," Murad told Filmy Charcha . A Rejected Proposal That Changed Her Life In his conversation with Filmy Charcha, Raza Murad recounted how her family approached a well-known playback singer as a potential groom. However, the singer declined the alliance, reportedly finding her physical frame too slender. This rejection, rather than becoming a setback, ironically set the stage for an unexpected breakthrough in her professional journey. "They approached a playback singer and arranged a meeting between them. He looked at her and said, 'She's too thin, Tezaab Turns the Tide Not long after, Madhuri landed a pivotal role in the action film Tezaab (1988), which catapulted her into the public eye. Her performance was widely appreciated, and she began to shed the image of a struggling actress. The film's success was a turning point that reshaped her future in the industry. Subhash Ghai's Timely Intervention During a shoot in Kashmir alongside superstar Rajesh Khanna, Madhuri's fate took another dramatic turn. Renowned filmmaker Subhash Ghai happened to be filming nearby. As Raza Murad shared, it was Madhuri's hairdresser who introduced her to Ghai, who was reportedly captivated by her charisma and potential. He requested a meeting in Mumbai and eventually cast her in the film Ram Lakhan, which went on to be a commercial hit. Ghai's decision to launch her under his banner proved pivotal in cementing her position as a bankable star. Suresh Wadkar's Indirect Confirmation In a 2023 episode of the singing competition Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, singer Suresh Wadkar seemed to hint that he was the man who had declined the marriage proposal from Madhuri's family years ago. When host Aditya Narayan hinted at an old rumour about a famous actress being rejected for marriage by a singer, Wadkar responded with a shy smile and glanced at his wife, Padma, seated beside him. While he didn't confirm it outright, his playful response led judges Anu Malik and Himesh Reshammiya to conclude the story had some truth. A Life Beyond the Spotlight In 1999, Madhuri married Dr. Sriram Nene, a US-based heart surgeon, and shifted her base to Denver, Colorado. She stepped back from films to focus on her family, raising two sons who are now college students. Years later, she made a return to Indian entertainment, now often appearing as a judge on music and dance reality shows. Suresh Wadkar jokingly acknowledged that his old comments might catch up with him one day, especially given Madhuri's recurring presence on national television. Who Is Suresh Wadkar? Suresh Ishwar Wadkar, born on 7 August 1955, is a renowned Indian playback vocalist known for his contributions to both Hindi and Marathi cinema. Alongside mainstream film music, he has also lent his voice to Bhojpuri and Konkani films, as well as Odia devotional albums and bhajans. In recognition of his remarkable work in the genre of Sugam Sangeet (light classical music), Wadkar received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 2018. Further honouring his artistic excellence, the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri in 2020.

Kajol has been a leading actress for over 30 years now and her journey is truly considered remarkable. She first gained attention in the early 90s, and quickly became a renowned name with her captivating screen-presence and natural acting talent. With a series of blockbuster hits to her name, she is considered one of the most iconic Bollywood actresses. But do you know Kajol refused several movies that went on to become massive hits? One of them was with her all-time favourite co-star Shah Rukh Khan, with whom she makes a commendable on-screen paring with. Scroll down to know about the hit SRK film that Kajol said no to. Which film of Shah Rukh Khan did Kajol said no to? Released in 1997, the film we are talking about is Yash Chopra's musical romantic drama Dil Toh Pagal Hai. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor, along with Akshay Kumar in a supporting role. The story revolved around the lives of members of a musical troupe, in which two dancers (Dixit and Kapoor) fall in love with their chorographer (Khan), getting entangled in a love triangle. Made in a budget of Rs 9 crore, the film earned Rs 12.04 crore overseas, and became the highest-grosser of the year. The film was highly praised for its direction, screenplay, soundtracks and energetic performances by the star-studded cast. Why Kajol rejected Dil Toh Pagal Hai? Interestingly, Karisma Kapoor's role was first offered to Kajol. However, the actress reportedly passed on the offer. During her appearance on Koffee With Karan S8 alongside Rani Mukerji, Kajol revealed that she said to Nisha's role, and it eventually landed in Karisma's destiny, for which she won a Filmfare and National Award for Best Supporting Actress. Recalling the time when she was offered Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Karisma shared on a reality television show, 'Every single heroine refused the film. The role came to me…it was a dance film and that too to work opposite Madhuri Dixit, they said 'How can we dance alongside Madhuri Dixit ji!' Initially, I too said no to it as it was a dance film and competition dance with Madhuri Dixit. I said, 'This isn't happening'. Then finally, Yash ji and Adi (Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra) narrated the story to me. My mother told me, 'You must take up the challenge. You are a big fan of Madhuri Dixit, you must do it. You work hard and you will shine.' Well, needless to say, Karisma Kapoor's portrayal of Nisha, and also her dance sequence with Madhuri Dixit is still considered one of her most cherished performances of all time.
