Mid-City Construction Finished, Madrid Is Richer, More Beautiful And Cultural Than Ever, With New Hotels And Fine Restaurants
As I write this, Madrid is sweltering, but when I visited this spring the weather was ideal, as it will be again in the fall. All the more reason to visit this great capital city in those seasons, especially since all the massive construction work in its center has finally been accomplished, opening up the avenues, so that Madrid is more beautiful and scrubbed cleaner than ever.

Its position as one of Europe's cultural capitals has been assured since the 1990s, with museums and artistic events expanded well beyond the great Prado and Thyssen museums, boosted by its industrial sector but increasingly dominated by a strong service sector. On my trip I 'discovered' the Bellas Artes de San Fernando, a large collection that includes 13 Goyas and a vast number of his etchings and plates for Los Caprichos. Other recently enhanced institutions include the Palacio de Linares, seat of the Casa de América; the Muséo Arqueologico Naçional; and the Muséo Naçional del Romanticismo.

Today Madrid's stock market is the third largest in Europe and the city is ranked fifth most important leading Centre of Commerce after London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.
As a result, like Barcelona, Madrid has become a very expensive city to live in, and tourists, with 11.2 million visitors last year, gobbled up the BnBs that were once apartments and spent more than 16 billion euros, with Americans leading the invasion.

Responding to this increasingly affluent market, major luxury hotel groups have been popping up on or off the main avenues to compete with longstanding institutions like The Ritz, Gran Hotel Ingles and The Palace, now joined by the thoroughly modern JW Marriott Madrid ( Sevilla 2 ), a block from the main avenue, Calle Alcalá ,with 139 rooms, most with private balconies. Rates are considerably below other deluxe properties like The Four Seasons up the block.

My room was quite spacious, very quiet––Madrid is not a raucously loud city––with a balcony set with chairs and small table, a king-size bed and very well equipped modern bath. The expansive lobby has a separate area for the concierge's desk.
There are now several hotels in Madrid that have first-rate restaurants rooms, and the JW Marriott's Qú by Mario Sandoval joins them with an à la carte dining room focusing on local products (Madrid has splendid markets from which to choose the best provender and meats). Sandoval is head of the Croque Group and comes from three generations of chefs. In 2013 he won the Spanish National Gastronomy Award, and his primary restaurant, Croque, has garnered two Michelin stars.

Q is a simpler, more casual affair, with a smart décor and lounge, antique pillars, tall mirrors and star-like hanging lights.

I had been eating a fair amount of Spanish ham on my trip, but only Q was offering Cinco Jotas Jamon Ibérico de bellota 5J, which is considered the finest in Spain, founded in Jabugo in 1879, uses only an ancient breed of acorn-fed black pigs (most producers use crossbreeds), and it has a sweet flavor and a satiny sheen of white fat. My friend and I also shared some cod fritters with aji amarillo mayonnaise and a plate of softly grilled artichokes.
Spring's wild strawberries with ice creams served at Q. JW Marriott
Lubina is a sea bass grilled à la bilbaina, with its characteristic, bold garlic and chile oil. For dessert there was a millefoglie of pineapple and cream with ginger ice cream; some perfect springtime strawberries slightly pickled and served with vanilla mascarpone and both strawberry and mint ice creams; and a chocolate, liquid center coolant with pistachio and violet ice cream, finishing off with glasses of Sherry.
Afterwards, at about ten o'clock I took a stroll down the Avenida, which was teeming with young people returning from a Netflix kick-off party in Retiro Park buoyed as much by the music as by the moonlight over Madrid.
In my next report on the city I'll recommend some more restaurants.

Ritz-Carlton harnessed the power of celebrity and social media for its Luminara debut
Teri West I spent my free time last week playing what I like to call "Luminara, I spy." Here's how you play: View the latest Instagram story from a celebrity aboard the Ritz-Carlton's newest yacht, see what other celebrities they filmed at last night's party on the yacht, and then go to those celebrities' Instagram stories to see which other famous guests you can spot. By the end of the sailing, I couldn't believe the list I had compiled. Ricky Martin, Colman Domingo, Anitta, Martha Stewart, Naomi Campbell and Kendall Jenner were a few of the A-listers I watched live it up together on a European cruise. It was also a highly unusual gathering; cruise ships don't normally have celebrity sailings. Lines will invite celebs on here and there for promotional purposes, be it as godmother at a christening ceremony or to perform a concert. But typically, when we see celebrities partying on boats on social media they are on private yachts, not a debut sailing for a luxury cruise ship. But that's likely why the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection held the event for them: It knows the power of social media, and it wants to be viewed differently than other cruise lines, said Robert Kwortnik, a marketing professor at Cornell University who teaches a course on the cruise industry. In other words, it links the Luminara experience to the celebrity lifestyle, he said. Kwortnik posited the mindset of a consumer viewing these Instagram Stories at home: "'If it's something that they would do, I should think about this," he said. "'I should consider a cruise for my next vacation.'" He noted that the celebrities ran the gamut in both age and industry: Musicians and actors and models and influencers who may have overlapping fan bases, but all represent different glamorous versions of the celebrity life. "It's all about, what do those individuals mean, right?" Kwortnik said. "What do they represent, and how well does that align with the Ritz Carlton brand? ... if you aspire to be like Martha Stewart, then this is something that matches up with that identity that the brand is trying to create." The dream of celebrity meetings This type of marketing also goes beyond encouraging those at home to imagine who they would be on a yacht. Kwortnick suggested that Ritz-Carlton also wants you to dream about who you might meet there, which is an important part of the experience for a smaller ship. "Who am I going to have a drink with?" he said. "Who might I sit in the hot tub with? Who might I do an excursion with? And I think that's the whole yacht concept." The Ritz-Carlton called the star-studded event a "milestone sailing," in a statement accompanied by images of Janelle Monae, Nina Dobrev and other famous guests in colorful, floor length dresses. "The exclusive two-night voyage, embarking from the timeless city of Rome and culminating in Valletta, Malta, marked an unforgettable preview of a new era in luxury sea travel," the brand wrote. "Aboard Luminara, guests experienced The Ritz-Carlton's legendary service elevated by the freedom and intimacy of yachting, with impeccable accommodations, locally inspired culinary offerings, and world-class entertainment." Gathering celebrities for a cruise wasn't Ritz-Carlton's first time making an unusual move: It's the first of what is now several luxury hotel brands to expand into vacations at sea. It's unclear whether celebrity sailings will become a trend, but Kwortnik pointed out that social media remains a powerful force in shaping interest and conversations. "I can see this being something that will really take off," Kwortnik said.

Kendall Jenner Is Bringing Back Tomato Girl Summer
The summer season is officially here and thriving—and model Kendall Jenner has wasted no time heading out on a lavish vacation. This month, Jenner (and sister Kylie Jenner) headed to Saint-Tropez in France for a little R&R. Earlier this week, the siblings were spotted living their best lives, swimming in the ocean in their chic little day dresses. Today, however, Kendall was spotted doing a little shopping at the Chloé store with some friends, and her choice of a bright red minidress brought back one of the biggest trends of summer 2023: Tomato girl summer. A few seasons back, tomato-themed looks was all of the rage on the runways and with celebrities. The aesthetic revolved around wearing shades of tomato red and earthy greens and browns; you could say it was all about dressing as though you were growing on a tomato vine in some chic, well-manicured garden. Today, in Saint-Tropez, Jenner revived the look yet again, pairing a red shift dress with red flip-flops. (Someone loves a monochromatic moment.)

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on Motorcycling Through 17 Countries in Long Way Home
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman have been road-tripping together for over 20 years. In 2004, the actors—who met on the set of 1997's The Serpent's Kiss and quickly bonded over a shared love of motorcycles—drove from London to New York City, via Europe, Asia, and North America (connecting the final leg, from Siberia to Alaska, by plane). This 19,000 mile journey was documented in their acclaimed TV series Long Way Round. Having caught the road trip bug, in 2007 they then rode from John O'Groats in Scotland to South Africa's Cape Town for Long Way Down. Then in 2019, they drove from the Southern tip of Argentina to Los Angeles for Long Way Up. Last year, McGregor and Boorman got on their bikes again: Setting off from McGregor's home in Scotland, they hopped into mainland Europe, through 17 countries, ranging from the Nordic and Baltic to the Alps and the Arctic Circle, before arriving back at Boorman's abode in England. The result is Long Way Home—Apple TV+'s travel documentary that doubles as a gentle glimpse at two old friends appreciating the countries at their door-step. Below, McGregor and Boorman talk us through Long Way Home, how they decided on the route, and what locations stood out to them. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, who have traveled much of the world by motorcycle, explore locations closer to home in Long Way Home. Apple How did you decide on the route for Long Way Home? Ewan McGregor: It was when we were in Bolivia doing Long Way Up. Charley Boorman: We had a particularly trying few days in Bolivia. We really started dreaming about roads that are much smoother. EM: When we are doing trips we always start dreaming about another. I think it's a sign that we're doing something we really love. It's like we don't want it to end so we have to start dreaming about another. We'd often talk about the parts of the world that we hadn't been to. I'd always looked at going to Scandinavia and a lot of the countries we go through on this trip.
