Air India baggage handling company apologises after video shows staff partying days after crash
A viral video showing senior officials from Air India 's partner company dancing at a staff party has caused widespread anger, with the celebrations taking place just days after the deadly crash of Air India flight AI171 in Ahmedabad on 12 June.
Air India SATS has released a statement regarding the viral video showing a senior executive partying with other members of staff less than 10 days after the fatal plane crash, saying the footage was 'completely out of context'.
Air India SATS (AISATS) is a 50-50 joint venture between Air India Limited, a Tata Group company, and SATS Ltd, a Singapore-based firm formerly known as Singapore Airport Terminal Services. The partnership specialises in providing airport services, including baggage handling, across Indian airports.
The footage shows Abraham Zachariah, chief operating officer of Air India SATS (AISATS), dancing with other staff members as loud music plays during a party held at the company's Gurugram office on 20 June.
In a statement, the company said: 'AISATS is aware of a video being circulated on social media that unfortunately is completely out of context.
'Notwithstanding, we sincerely regret any emotional discomfort this may have caused,' the statement said, IANS reported.
The viral video triggered outrage on social media, as the celebration occurred while many families were still waiting to receive the bodies of crash victims. The footage drew strong criticism from users on X.
One user wrote: 'Problem with Indian corporates is that they don't have heart, only thing matter is money. If someone dies let's give some money to victim's family, no accountability, no investigation & no arrest. They just create a public image through charity, so no question asked.'
Another user replied: 'Would've been more advisable for you to defer and not host parties at such times @airindia.'
Another user called it 'pathetic and highly insensitive', and another said: 'You should be ashamed of yourselves. I hope you clowns are grounded.'
The devastating Air India crash occurred at around 2pm local time on 12 June, when a London-bound Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner plunged into accommodation for medical students at Ahmedabad's BJ Medical College just moments after take-off. It was the first crash of its kind involving a Boeing 787 anywhere in the world.

Sandal scandal: Prada credits new design's Indian legacy amid furore
NEW DELHI/MILAN, June 28 (Reuters) - Luxury fashion powerhouse Prada has acknowledged the ancient Indian roots of its new sandal design after the debut of the open-toe footwear sparked a furore among Indian artisans and politicians thousands of miles from the catwalk in Italy. Images from Prada's (1913.F), opens new tab fashion show in Milan last weekend showed models wearing leather sandals with a braided design that resembled handmade Kolhapuri slippers with designs dating back to the 12th century. A wave of criticism in the media and from lawmakers followed over the Italian brand's lack of public acknowledgement of the Indian sandal design, which is named after a city in the western state of Maharashtra. Lorenzo Bertelli, son of Prada's owners, responded to the sandal scandal in a letter to a trade group on Friday recognising their Indian heritage. "We acknowledge that the sandals... are inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear, with a centuries-old heritage," Bertelli, Prada's head of corporate social responsibility, wrote in the letter to the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, seen by Reuters. The sandals are at an early stage of design and it is not certain they will be commercialized, but Prada is open to a "dialogue for meaningful exchange with local Indian artisans" and will arrange follow-up meetings, he wrote. A Prada spokesperson issued a statement acknowledging the sandal's inspiration from India, adding the company has "always celebrated craftsmanship, heritage and design traditions". Prada products are beyond the reach of most Indians. Its men's leather sandals retail for $844 and up, while the Kolhapuri slippers, sold in Indian shops and street markets, start at about $12. India's luxury market is small but growing fast, with rising numbers of rich people buying Louis Vuitton bags, Lamborghini cars, luxury homes and watches. Conversely, Indian culture and crafts are increasingly finding their way into global brand designs. India's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders to buy controlling stake in Colombo Shipyard
June 28 (Reuters) - Indian state-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders ( opens new tab said it would buy a controlling stake in Sri Lankan peer Colombo Dockyard ( opens new tab in a deal not exceeding $52.96 million to grow its shipbuilding and repair business. The transaction, involving the acquisition of at least 51% equity in Colombo Dockyard, will close within six months, after which the Sri Lankan shipbuilder will become a part of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, according to a regulatory filing on Friday. Colombo Dockyard was not immediately available for comment outside business hours. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders also builds warships and submarines, and the deal is seen giving India a strategic foothold in the Indian Ocean island nation where New Delhi and Beijing have been jostling for influence for years. For 2024, Colombo Dockyard's turnover was 25.45 billion Sri Lankan rupees ($84.89 million), according to the filing, while Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders' revenue for the year ended March 2025 was 114.32 billion Indian rupees ($1.34 billion).
