SEPANG: Palestine's Planning and International Cooperation Minister Dr Estephan Salameh arrived in Kuala Lumpur Friday (July 11) to attend the 4th Ministerial Meeting of the Conference on Cooperation Among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD IV).
He arrived on a special flight at the KLIA Bunga Raya Complex at 8.40 am and was received by Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia Walid Abu Ali.
Salameh is scheduled to co-chair the CEAPAD IV alongside Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Japan's Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya.
The meeting is held in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings under Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship.
CEAPAD IV will focus, among others, on capacity-building programmes, the reconstruction of critical infrastructure in Palestine, and the effective delivery of comprehensive humanitarian assistance.
Current member states of CEAPAD are Japan, Palestine, Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.
The last CEAPAD ministerial meeting was held in Bangkok in 2018.
According to the Malaysian Foreign Ministry's website, the meeting reflects Malaysia's continued commitment to the Palestinian cause, as underscored by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Jan 29, who emphasised the urgent need to accelerate efforts for the reconstruction of Gaza and Palestine.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to working closely with Japan under the CEAPAD framework to respond to the Palestinians' call for assistance. - Bernama

UNRWA Warns Of Israeli Plan To Create 'Mass Internment Camps' In Southern Gaza

RAMALLAH (Palestine), July 15 (Bernama-WAFA) -- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) media advisor, Adnan Abu Hasna in Gaza, has raised alarm over Israel's reported plans to establish what it calls a "humanitarian city" in southern Gaza. Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported that he warned that the initiative is essentially a blueprint for mass internment camps. In a press statement, Abu Hasna said Israel has long been laying the groundwork for such a plan through the establishment of aid distribution points in southern Gaza. 'Now, they are openly declaring their intent to forcibly displace the population of Gaza into collective detention camps in Rafah, as a prelude to their expulsion from Palestinian land,' he stated. He warned that this development signals Israel's continued commitment to the forced transfer of Gaza's population, expressing deep concern over the extreme pressure being applied to Palestinians. 'The total collapse of the healthcare system, absence of aid, and depletion of fuel are all being weaponised to coerce the population into voluntary displacement,' he said. He further cautioned that the so-called humanitarian zone is incapable of hosting Gaza's 2 million residents within just 60 square kilometres of devastated land, describing the area as uninhabitable and void of any semblance of life or future. Abu Hasna urged the international community to intervene immediately to halt what he described as a dangerous and deliberate attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians under the guise of humanitarian relief. -- BERNAMA-WAFA

Escalating violence against Palestinians in West Bank, UN reports

GENEVA: The United Nations human rights office has reported a surge in violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, with increased killings, attacks, and harassment by Israeli settlers and security forces. Thameen Al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), stated, 'Israeli settlers and security forces have intensified their killings, attacks and harassment of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in the past weeks.' The OHCHR highlighted that approximately 30,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced in the northern West Bank since the Israeli military launched its 'Iron Wall' operation. The office warned that these actions contribute to the unlawful annexation of Palestinian territory, violating international law. Recent data reveals alarming trends. In June, the UN recorded the highest monthly number of Palestinian injuries in over two decades. Since January, there have been 757 settler attacks on Palestinians or their properties, marking a 13% increase compared to the same period last year. The toll since October 7, 2023, stands at at least 964 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. In contrast, 53 Israelis have died in reported Palestinian attacks or armed clashes in the same region. - AFP
