EU train station which could see 594-mile train journeys from the UK
An exciting new service may provide Brits with a new way to visit Italy that doesn't involve flying. Currently, the Eurostar allows Brits to travel with convenience to a few key destinations around Europe, including Paris, Lille, Brussels, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
Italy's state railway has announced plans to run between London and Paris by 2029 as part of a €1bn (£860m) investment in services through the Channel Tunnel in Folkestone, Kent, and beyond.
Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) says it will use trains modelled after its Frecciarossa express services in continental Europe - an alternative to Eurostar.
FS raised the prospect of longer links from London, including to Marseille and Milan via Lyon. The new services are facilitated by a planned terminal redesign of London's St Pancras. London St Pancras Highspeed, the company responsible for the station, hoped a redesigned terminal could attract new railway operators to compete with Eurostar, reported the Times.
The prospective route would see trains depart from London St Pancras station to Milano Centrale - Milan's main train station. The Italian station opened in the early 1930s to replace an older, smaller station.
There are 24 tracks at Centrale, with a soaring glass and metal arched roof over the platforms. The imposing design of the building was intended to showcase the dominance of then-Prime Minister Mussolini's fascist regime, according to Italia Rail.
In addition to being one of the most grand train stations in design, Milano Centrale is the second-largest station in Italy - behind Roma Termini. In addition to being a hub for international travellers, the station offers regular daily service to cities throughout Italy. In fact, over 320,000 people pass through the station each day.
On the platform level of the station, there are shops and restaurants, as well as an information office for confused or curious travellers. There is also a Sala Freccia Club across from Track 21, for travellers with a Gold or Platinum CARTAFRECCIA card or an Executive or AV Salottino ticket. There is also a Sala Blu next to track four, for passengers with disabilities who need special assistance.
The lowest level of the station has shops and restaurants to kill time between trains. On the mezzanine and upper levels there are more shops and restaurants.
The ground level of Milano Centrale is where travellers can find a ticket office, the KiPoint left luggage facility, a post office, and most of the shops and restaurants in the station.
Travellers can also access the Centrale Metro station without leaving the building, and just outside of the train station are the boarding points for several city bus and tram lines.

Telecom Italia secures 750 mln euro state-backed loan, sources say
MILAN, July 3 (Reuters) - Telecom Italia (TIM) ( opens new tab is set to receive a 750-million euro ($884 million) syndicated loan backed by Italy's export credit agency SACE, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday. The five-year facility provided by a pool of banks will benefit from a 70% guarantee under SACE's Archimede scheme, the sources said, asking not to be named. It is expected to be finalised as early as this month. The Archimede programme is designed to support Italian companies investing in strategic sectors such as digital transformation and the green transition. It envisages a maximum exposure of 60 billion euros through 2029, of which 10 billion were already taken on by SACE last year, according to the Treasury's multi-year budget plan unveiled in April. Despite the phasing out of the state aid emergency programmes adopted in the wake of the COVID pandemic, Italy helps firms secure funding through several guarantee schemes worth more than 13% of gross domestic product (GDP), the latest government data showed. EU accounting rules state that public guarantees do not drive up the national debt until they are tapped by the banks which benefit. TIM will use the resources to fund ongoing infrastructure upgrades and boost its digital services, in line with national and EU digital goals. Spokespeople for Telecom Italia and SACE declined to comment. TIM, the heir to Italy's former phone monopoly and the country's largest telecoms group, last year sold its prized fixed-line network infrastructure for 18.8 billion euros to a consortium led by U.S fund KKR (KKR.N), opens new tab and including Italy's Treasury. The deal, aimed at slashing the company's debt pile and streamlining its operations, has helped TIM to improve its credit rating, which remains below investment grade territory. Crete wildfires 2025 travel warning issued to UK tourists
A fast-moving wildfire assisted by gale-force winds burned through Greece's southern island of Crete on Wednesday night into Thursday morning (July 2 and 3), prompting the evacuation. The local fire department said 230 firefighters backed up by 10 water-dropping aircraft were battling the flames, which have burned through forest and farmland in the Ierapetra area on the island's southern coast. Several people were treated for breathing difficulties following the wildfire in Crete, officials said, but there were no immediate reports of serious injuries. While homes were reported to have been damaged as flames swept through hillside forests, fanned by strong winds. Two people were evacuated by boat overnight, while six private boats were on standby in case further evacuations by sea became necessary, the coast guard added. 'It's a very difficult situation. The fire is very hard to contain. Right now, they cannot contain it,' civil protection official at the regional authority, Nektarios Papadakis, told The Associated Press. 'The tourists who were moved out are all OK. They have been taken to an indoor basketball arena and hotels in other regions of the island." The fire service and a civil protection agency issued mobile phone alerts for the evacuations and appealed to residents not to return to try to save their property. The risk of wildfires remains very high across Crete and parts of southern Greece on Thursday, according to a daily bulletin issued by the fire service. Crete is one of Greece's most popular destinations for both foreign and domestic tourists. Wildfires are frequent in the country during its hot, dry summers, and the fire department has already tackled dozens across Greece so far this year.
