Yahoo24-04-2025
Pantomime favourites Josh Benson and Jamie Jones are set to return to the Darlington Hippodrome for a third pantomime season - joining the circus as Joey the Clown and Dame Betty Barnum in a production of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
The pair will be joined on stage by Brendan Cole.
The former Strictly Come Dancing professional, who appeared on every season of that show from 2004 through to 2017, will be taking on the role of the evil ringmaster, Baron Von Bolshoi.
Mr Benson has performed at venues including Leeds City Varieties Music Hall, London's Charing Cross Theatre, and the Phoenix Arts Club.
He is also a regular at the Brick Lane Music Hall and previously appeared as the pantomime comic at Chesterfield's Pomegranate Theatre, York Theatre Royal, and Halifax's Victoria Theatre.
He said: "I can't wait to be back with my 'panto gang' at the Hippodrome for a hat-trick season.
"Darlington audiences are so much fun to perform for… and I'm so excited to be bringing them some more daft antics this Christmas."
Mr Jones graduated from Staffordshire University with a first-class honours degree in musical theatre, and is also a writer and director for various production companies across the UK.
He said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be returning to the beautiful Darlington Hippodrome this Christmas as Dame Betty Barnum in Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
"Expect fabulous costumes, sumptuous scenery, and laugh out loud comedy.
"This year's show promises to be one of Darlington's biggest yet, so come and join us in the Big Top for some festive panto magic."

Hulk Hogan's cause of death revealed one week after he died, aged 71

Hulk Hogan's cause of death has been revealed, one week after he died at the age of 71. Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, was pronounced dead at hospital, less than 90 minutes after medics arrived at his home in Clearwater, Florida, on July 24. A medical examiner's report has now found that he died of a heart attack. The report from the District Six Medical Examiner also said Hogan previously had leukaemia and atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm. He faced names including Andre the Giant and Randy Savage and enjoyed a career in the media, featuring in films and television shows. His death was confirmed by the WWE last week, who posted a statement on X saying: 'WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. 'One of pop culture's most recognisable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. 'WWE extends its condolences to Hogan's family, friends, and fans.' Paying tribute to Hogan at the time, friend and wrestler Ric Flair said: "I am absolutely shocked to hear about the passing of my close friend @HulkHogan! Hulk has been by my side since we started in the wrestling business. 'An incredible athlete, talent, friend, and father!' Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson also paid tribute to his 'childhood hero'. In an Instagram post, Johnson said: 'Rest in peace, Terry Bollea aka the immortal Hulk Hogan. 'To millions of little kids you were a childhood hero – myself included. 'In 1984, I gave you your 'Hulkster' headband back, in the locker room in Madison Square Garden – I was the lucky kid caught it when you threw it in the crowd. 'You were wrestling Mr Wonderful, Paul Orndorff, that night in the main event. You were shocked and so happy after the match because you told me that was your very last headband and if it weren't for me, you'd have no way of getting that exact one made again. 'You promised me that you would get more made and give me a 'Hulkster' headband of my own as a thank you gift. 'A month later in Madison Square Garden, you did just that. You kept your word, with a handshake and a 'thanks kid', and that meant the world to that little 12 year old boy.'

Campaigner rescues teenager from Itchen Bridge dressed as cone

A suicide prevention campaigner has rescued a girl from the top of the Itchen Bridge. Danny Carter, 35, was on the bridge as part of a suicide prevention campaign. Shortly after 5pm today a girl was seen climbing onto the railings of the bridge before the celebrity hairstylist sprinted across the road and bear hugged the teen, pulling her to safety. READ MORE: Hampshire police arrived at the scene moments later and the 17-year-old was taken to police custody. Speaking to the Echo moments after the heroic rescue, Danny said: "I was walking up to do the awareness just literally this evening for fun. "It was to try and raise some awareness, have a little bit of a laugh to say thank you for everything that [supporters] have done. "I'm walking up and I see in my distance someone walking backwards and forwards. "With that kind of walk, you know they're thinking so I intervene, I run across and as I've got not even half way across this road, she's got on top of the railings. "I just bear hugged her to the ground — and I'm dressed as a traffic cone. "It's every day and this is why I've said for the last fortnight, the patrols need to be here. "It upsets me to see that a young girl of 17 thought that was her only way out. READ MORE: Itchen Bridge lined with suicide prevention campaigners "All it takes is two people to patrol this bridge rather than two people patrolling the city centre looking for fag butts on the floor. "It's horrific. I'm so sorry, it was meant to be fun." Danny is in the process of raising money on GoFundMe, where he hopes to open a mobile coffee shop created out of a renovated shipping container, called Coffee Mate, beside the Itchen Bridge where people will have access to drink and snacks and a warm place to sit. He added: "I want to get as much awareness as possible that we need this her. Today we have reached our £5,000 target." Contact Jo@ or call 116 123 for support

Strictly stars cut contact with Wynne Evans after controversy

Wynne Evans has lost touch with the stars of Strictly Come Dancing Wynne Evans has admitted that the Strictly Come Dancing cast have broken ties with him. The Welsh opera singer's time on Strictly last year was marred by controversy, sparked by an awkward moment where Katya Jones moved Evans' hand from the middle of her waist and a second moment where the professional dancer rejected his high five on the BBC show. This year, the BBC dropped Evans — including from his role on BBC Radio Wales — after he apologised for using "inappropriate language" on the Strictly tour. This week Strictly rehearsals began as the BBC show cast prepare to return to our screens in September with new famous faces taking part in the competition. Now, last year's contestant, Evans, has held a candid Q&A session with listeners on his own radio station, The Wynne Evans Show, on Thursday, where he spoke about Strictly. Strictly Come Dancing pros don't speak to Wynne Evans Everyone wanted to know whether the singer was still in touch with any of the Strictly professionals or the 2024 celebrity partners; the question kept coming up. Answering it for the first time, he said: "No I'm not, I'm not in contact with any of them [The Strictly cast]... Once I had a few messages from them since, not really, no. Now today, I'm not in contact with any of them today. Absolutely none of them." When he was asked again, he explained: "Absolutely none of them [the Strictly professional dancers]. I have had some conversations with a couple of the judges who have been really nice to me, I have to say." Later, Evans claimed the professional dancers don't speak to him because they were "scared for themselves". "I understand that," he added. "Especially for the pro dancers, Strictly is all they have. If Strictly doesn't exist, they have got a problem." Despite losing touch with his professional dance partner Jones, he praised her. Evans said they "really got on well". "She's a really nice person," he said. "I'm not going to say anything negative about Katya." He explained he could reach out to her. "I could text her if I wanted, I'm not in touch," Evans said. Elsewhere on his radio show, Evans shared his frustration at some people who he felt could have "done more" to support him. "They said they'd have to check with their PR first," he said. The Wynne Evans Show The 53-year-old has been hosting The Wynne Evans Show since June. It is live every weekday from 9am to 12pm on the website Previously, he explained: "This show is for my amazing community — The Wynners — who've supported me through thick and thin. After so many messages and calls asking me to come back, I knew I had to do something special. "This show is my way of giving back – a space where we can come together every morning, share a laugh, play the music we love, and just be ourselves. It's more than a show – it's a proper family." Yahoo UK has approached BBC representatives for further comment.
