Netflix documentary series Trainwreck explores some of the most bizarre, jaw-dropping, and at times downright revolting events in recent history. One particularly unforgettable episode focuses on a maritime disaster that made global headlines: the infamous 'Poop Cruise'.
In February 2013, the Carnival Triumph cruise ship set sail from Galveston, Texas, with more than 4,000 passengers and crew onboard, bound for a leisurely four-day Caribbean getaway. But the holiday quickly unravelled into chaos.
On the third day, a fire erupted in the aft engine room. Though the blaze was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported, it critically damaged the ship's main power systems. The Triumph was left drifting in the Gulf of Mexico without propulsion, or basic functioning utilities.
With the power out, vital systems failed, including air conditioning, refrigeration, and most importantly, the sewage and sanitation infrastructure. What followed was a nightmare.
Toilets stopped working. Raw sewage began leaking into hallways and cabins, filling the ship with a stench described by passengers as unbearable. Many were forced to relieve themselves in plastic bags and red biohazard bags, as bathrooms became unusable.
With the air conditioning offline, temperatures inside soared, making the interior suffocatingly hot and humid. Dozens of passengers chose to sleep on open decks just to escape the heat and foul odours.
Food quickly became scarce. Without refrigeration, the crew did what they could, serving cold sandwiches and sparse meals often consisting of little more than bread and vegetables. Water was rationed, and tensions steadily rose.
Although communication with the outside world was limited, word of the ship's grim conditions quickly spread. Images of the stranded vessel and its desperate passengers went viral, drawing international media attention.
After five gruelling days, the Carnival Triumph was finally towed to port in Mobile, Alabama, bringing an end to the ordeal, but not to the controversy.
In the aftermath, investigations uncovered troubling details. CNN obtained documents showing only four of the ship's six generators were functioning before departure, and that Carnival had prior knowledge of both fire hazards and fuel line issues. Records revealed nine separate fuel line incidents in just two years, raising serious questions about the company's maintenance practices and safety protocols.
As lawsuits mounted and scrutiny of the cruise industry intensified, Carnival found itself in damage control.
Then-President and CEO Gerry Cahill issued a public apology, saying: 'I want to again apologise to our guests and their friends and families. The situation on board was difficult and we are very sorry for what has happened. We pride ourselves on providing our guests with a great vacation experience and clearly we failed in this case.'
Kimberly Townsend, a 54-year-old mother of two and grandmother of three, was among 31 passengers who sued Carnival, holding the company accountable for what they describe as a disastrous voyage.
In her testimony, Townsend gave a vivid and emotional account of the harrowing days spent aboard the disabled ship stranded in the Gulf of Mexico. She described terrified passengers crowding the decks, worried for their safety, while foul-smelling toilets overflowed into hallways. There was no power, near-total darkness, long waits for limited water, and a severe lack of food.
Townsend recalled finally managing to reach her mother by phone once the crippled ship was towed into Mobile, Alabama - arriving days late from what was meant to be a dream vacation. She told the court she had begged her mother to come get her right away. As she recounted the moment, her voice faltered, she looked down, and began to sob in the witness chair.
She was one of several passengers from the Carnival Triumph who took the stand, some breaking down in tears, as they spoke about the ordeal and the emotional toll that still lingers a year later.
'I did not get physically injured. I got mentally injured,' testified Jean Cripps, a 74-year-old grandmother who suffers from Parkinson's disease. She went on the cruise with her husband, Alton, who has diabetes and a hurt leg that forced him to retire disabled. The elderly couple was on the cruise as a present from their son, David, and grandson, Easton, who went with them.
'It never ends, the whole experience never ends,' testified Cripps. 'It's over and over again. We had two good days,' she said, referring to the first days of the cruise.
'But that's not what I think about. I think about the smell, the stench and the bad things. All the memories come flooding back, and I can't stop them.'
Among the worst memories, Cripps testified, was the fear that the ship, which listed severely after the fire, would actually turn over and sink.
'It was a horrible experience,' testified Michelle Key, 48, who went on the cruise with her mother, Fleda Key, 68. 'I walked through water and faeces and urine, no telling what else,' she testified. 'We would slip and slide through greasy, gross, slippery muck,' she said, adding 'it was very difficult' for her mother.
Fleda Key described having terrible diarrhoea on numerous occasions and having difficulty finding any toilets that were not overflowing.
'There was lots of urine and faeces all the way up to the rim of every one,' she said, explaining she 'choked away the smell'. Like many of the witnesses, she testified that she lived for days in total fear that they might not finish the voyage alive. 'I was fearful, downright afraid and scared,' said Fleda.

During peak season, crowds of up to 17,000 cruise ship passengers descend daily on the island, flocking to Fira and Oia, renowned for its stunning sunsets. Santorini, which has earned the nickname 'Instagram Island' thanks to its breathtaking views and photogenic avenues, is proving irresistible for globetrotters. By nightfall, the narrow lanes and scenic balconies are swamped to an almost stifling degree by snap-happy travellers. However, tranquility is restored post-sunset as they retreat to their vessels. Despite social media being awash with footages suggesting otherwise, Chimenti told CNN that these portrayals are inaccurate. "The problem is that the social media are showing something completely different from what is the reality," he insisted. "The truth is that the island is empty. Right now is like never before, it's the worst season ever." He reveals distressing figures indicating "the hotels right now are more or less under 30% of a normal season," also highlighting that other trades, like eateries, across the island are feeling the pinch. In Chimenti's view, potential visitors eager to explore off-peak or genuinely unwind there are being deterred by the mythical image of excess congestion. He said: "Over-tourism doesn't exist. What I see is a lack of structures." Chimenti said that more strategic measures were needed regarding tourist destinations. "Santorini has one of the most important archaeological sites right now in Europe," he claimed. "Why are cruise ships not organising tours to the archaeological sites? If you split the people in three parts of the island, so at different times they are doing multiple things, they have time to enjoy and you will never have crowds in any part of the island."

Trainwreck: Poop Cruise tells the fateful story of the 14-storey Carnival Triumph cruise that was stranded for five days in the Gulf of Mexico in 2013 with 4,000 plus passengers and crew on board. The 'luxury cruise' was meant to be a four-day round trip from Galveston in Texas to Cozumel in Mexico, but an engine room fire destroyed electrical cables that supplied the entire ship, leaving the vessel with no power, refrigeration, lighting, air-conditioning or – worst of all – flushing toilets. Archive news footage and witness testimonies from passengers and crew expose the gruelling reality of a situation in which the cruise director, Jan, resorted to instructing passengers over the PA system to defecate in plastic bags. Passengers on board the ship told of carpets soaked in urine and having to sleep in tents on the deck. Reports emerged of passengers having to queue for hours for cold onion and cucumber sandwiches and fights breaking out over dwindling supplies. Speaking to CNN at the time of the incident, passenger Ann Barlow said: 'It's disgusting. It's the worst thing ever', while her husband Toby told the news channel there is 'sewage running down the walls and floors'. Passengers cheered and the ship's horn sounded as the 272 metre-long cruise ship finally docked at the Alabama cruise terminal in Mobile after five days at sea, a process that took six hours. The president and CEO of Carnival Cruise Line, Gerry Cahilll, apologised profusely to the passengers for the ordeal. All passengers received a full refund, transportation expenses, reimbursement for some of the in-cruise purchases and an additional $500 compensation.

One particular spot that has been a tourist cash cow in recent years is a gorgeous lakeside location that once featured in a hugely popular Netflix series - and sparked an influx of fans of the show to its shores. South Korean series Crash Landing on You first aired six years ago but has amassed millions of fans across the world, with Asian fans particularly keen to stop by the scenic locations during visits to Europe. The Kdrama tells the tale of a piano prodigy who, while studying in Switzerland, is forced to enlist in the North Korean military. During his time at home he falls for a South Korean heiress who is accidentally dropped into the communist territory during a paragliding accident. When it aired, it became the second highest-rated series in Korean cable television history. Many of Switzerland's lakes and mountains are showcased in the show but one spot, the tiny village of Iseltwald on Lake Brienz, has proved a big draw for fans. A turnstile placed at the end of the jetty means visitors must pay 5 Swiss Francs each (around £4.55) if they want a selfie in the place that appeared in the Kdrama And in recent years, the village has decided to charge them for their moment of posing for the Gram. There's now a turnstile - like the one you might get at a football ground - installed in front of the jetty that was used in a famous scene in the show. Should you want to push through it and take a snap or too, it'll cost each person 5 Swiss Francs (£4.55). Those who've seen images of the turnstile shared on social media said it was 'wild' that people were being asked to pay for a natural view. But it works both ways, locals in the town have also protested about the amount of visitors the village has had thanks to the show in recent years, branding it 'rubbish tourism'. Bans on Instagrammers trying to get selfies of popular tourist spots - often featured in films - have become increasingly popular in recent years. Last summer, a road in Vermont that had become overrun with Instagram-crazed tourists was closed to visitors during fall foliage season. Known for its appearances in commercials and the film Forrest Gump, Jenne Road in Reading has become a popular spot for those looking to snap pics of autumn's changing colors. For the second year in a row in 2024, the town's board has voted to close the road to leaf peepers, MyNBC5 reported. Jeanne Road resident Bill Bakker urged the board to close the road, describing the 'huge line of cars' parked nearby. 'We've had people park on our private property. It's just really just a very, very, very bad scene,' he said. The site also includes Jenne Farm, a focal point of the scene whose beauty Bakker acknowledged. 'It's the way the hills sort of roll, and from this one viewpoint, you're sort of looking down through the field and onto the farm. So I'm not going to say it's not beautiful,' he said.
