Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters packed a real bite
IT was an act of tough love but one that had to happen. There are now so many celebrities going on freebie holidays at viewers' expense that someone had the idea of making them fight for their lives if they wanted to make it home again. Give it a month and only Susan Calman would be left standing, which is as it should be.
That was the first thought on seeing Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters had been given the green light, and here it was, the idea made, er, flesh.
Billed as an 'entertainment and wildlife crossover' - fancy - seven moderately famous folk were sent to the Bahamas to swim with the apex predators and generally raise awareness. To show that this was all about education and not cheap laughs, the celebs were promised that no one would be voted off each week. I'd have thought that was the least of their worries.
The first sign that they should have gone on a hiking holiday in the Lake District instead was the sight of an instructor missing an arm and a leg. He had been in a tussle once with a bull shark, the very creatures the celebs were about to meet.
'Today?' gulped one.
'In the water?' said another.
Since it was the first day, the celebs were allowed to stand in a cage while sharks the size of Renault Clios had fun rattling the bars. Call the Midwife's Helen George had the worst of it, being too scared to put her head underwater, never mind go eyeball to eyeball with a shark.

She had her reasons for fearing the water, as did Lenny Henry. Both involved childhood tales and phobias that ran deep.'I like the idea of having a little bit more bravery,' he said. 'Yes, we're on the telly. Yes, we're all celebrities, but it's different, this.' Was it, though? Heartstring-tugging back stories, manufactured jeopardy, talk of leaving their comfort zones - it all seemed pretty standard reality show fare.
But the instructors were good value, and the celebrities more thoughtful than your average bunch. Ross Noble kept the quips coming, while George, once the screaming stopped, was charming company, even when a stingray got too close for comfort. 'Oh my God, it's coming right for my vagina,' she cried. Now there's a sentence I guarantee you will never hear in an Attenborough doc.
George was not keen on the barracuda that wandered into a lesson featuring young lemon sharks. The instructor agreed, declaring it 'untrustworthy'. Alas, it was not the barracuda they had to worry about.
Ross was the unlucky one, but it was no big deal. Even George declared it was 'like a kitten's been at you'. The goal of turning them into 'shark advocates' was clearly going well.
The nip was a reminder that they were hardly in Attenborough territory, and this was still a celebrity reality show with a paramedic and psychological therapist on hand, but it was no walk in the water park either.

Taking on the challenge is Sir Lenny Henry, Call the Midwife's Helen George, McFly's Dougie Poynter, comedian Ross Noble, Countdown's Rachel Riley, presenter Ade Adepitan and Motherhood star Lucy Punch. They are lead on their expedition by shark experts including Dr. Tristan Guttridge, and at one point, he takes the celebrities to an area in the Bahamas known for its Lemon Sharks. Dr. Tristan tells the celebrities that as they stand in the waist height water, they need to remain still, and even if the sharks nudge into them, the key is not to panic. The stars enter the water in small groups so as not to cause too much alarm to the sharks. Comedian Ross, 49, describes the creatures as "peaceful" and while he agrees, Dr. Tristan then adds: "Of all the sharks I've ever worked with, it's the only one I've ever been bitten by." Moments later, a larger shark picks up the scent of the bait box in the bait box near the celebrities, and breaches the water with a fish in its mouth, causing them to be on high alert. Indeed, the Lemon sharks then start to get a bit more "excited" and with the sea bed being churned up by their faster movements, a shark suddenly butts into Ross's ankle and bites him. The funnyman staggers a bit in the water prompting the others to ask: "What happened?" In a very calm voice, Ross replies: "A shark just bit me." Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters In a voiceover, it's explained that the shark had "an exploratory bite" after Ross didn't move when it bumped into his leg. Dr. Tristan then decides that because the sharks are getting "a bit jumpy" they should slowly move back to the boat. Thankfully, the bite is more of a nibble and Ross jokes that he is "lucky to be alive". But with high drama already in the first episode, what else will the celebrities face when they head below the waves later in the series? Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters starts tonight, Monday July 14 at 9pm on ITV1.

Christine Lampard reveals 'most distressing' thing that has ever happened to her
The Loose Women star raised more than a million pounds for charity in 2010 by undertaking a challenge that had never been accomplished before but admitted that it was so "distressing" at the time. Christine Lampard has opened up on a "horrific" experience that she had on television more than 15 years ago. The star, 46, has been a mainstay on screen since she hosted The One Show in the late 2000s, but admitted that the "most distressing" thing when she was trying to raise money for charity. She added: "That was the support boat in the background, just in case I drowned! It was 22 miles, I think, across the English Channel. I had never water-skied before so, just like the shark programme, it was completely beginning from scratch. "I had never, ever done it before and I foolishly thought about people doing it on holiday where it looks lovely!" In the end, Christine, who has Patricia, six, and four-year-old Freddie with husband Frank Lampard, raised more than £1 million for charity, but insisted that it was the hardest thing she has ever put herself through in a physical sense. She added: "And suddenly when you do it for real, you realise how tough it is but at that point I was in it so I had to learn. It was physically the most distressing thing I think I will ever do. "Hugely worth it with the money that was raised, it was a lot of money but it took a lot of training, a lot of work, a lot of support." Christine spoke of how she spent her younger years doing adventurous things like jumping out of planes, explaining: "I was like the rollercoaster girl, I was like 'I'll go...' But these days, she has decided to "shut up shop" when it comes to her sense of adventure, especially since become "Now, absolutely not. No, no, no. The fear has kicked in since I've gotten older, and definitely since having children. With the Channel, the box has been ticked. But I do appreciate people giving thing a go when they are fearful of something."

Helen said: 'I was terrified of putting my head underwater. I have a real deep-rooted fear. 'I used to love the water when I was really young, but I went to a swimming party when I was six. 'They put those weird Nineties foam mats down. They're massive yoga mats, really. 'I just remember this moment of being stuck underneath one and not being able to get out. There was that fear of being trapped. I finally made my way up to the surface. 'But I remember no one noticing that I'd gone, and no one really believing what I said, because no one had seen it. From then, I got it in my head about not putting my head underwater. 'I have a really strong image of looking up to the top of the swimming pool and the mats were on top and no one knew I was down there.' Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
