Army officer with top secret clearance admits sharing classified information on dating app
David Franklin Slater, 64, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to sharing classified details about national defense on a foreign dating platform on Thursday, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Slater retired from the Army in 2020 and went on to work as a civilian employee for the Air Force in Nebraska from August 2021 to April 2022.
He was specifically hired by US Strategic Command (STRATCOM) - a defense force tasked with protecting America's nuclear weapons and preventing foreign attacks.
During his STRATCOM stint at Offutt Air Force Base, Slater held a Top Secret security clearance and attended sensitive briefings on the war Russia waged on Ukraine.
Despite having signed paperwork pledging not to keep classified information under wraps, he intentionally spilled details about military targets and Russian capabilities to a someone who claimed to be a Ukrainian woman.
Based on Slater's social media presence, he apparently had an affinity for Russian and Ukrainian women.
When DailyMail.com reviewed his Facebook likes last year, his feed was flooded with photos of women from Eastern Europe.
Slater had met and communicated with this partner in crime over a dating app. During their unlawful exchanges, she referred to him as her 'secret love informant' and her 'secret agent.'
His international lover showed a keen interest in how the war was progressing and what any future plans might be, according to court documents.
The woman regularly requested sensitive, non-public, closely held, and classified NDI, which had been labeled as 'SECRET.'
She inquired about military operations specifically at least nine times, authorities said.
'American Intelligence says that already 100 percent of Russian troops are located on the territory of Ukraine. Do you think this information can be trusted?' the woman once asked.
A few days later, she asked specifics about data shown in one of the offices.
'Dear, what is shown on the screens in the special room?? It is very interesting,' she wrote.
'By the way, you were the first to tell me that NATO members are traveling by train and only now (already evening) this was announced on our news. You are my secret informant love! How were your meetings? Successfully?'
He was finally arrested on March 2, 2024. No further information about the identity of who was on the other side of Slater's screen has been released.
'Certain responsibilities are incumbent to individuals with access to Top Secret information,' US Attorney Susan Lehr for the District of Nebraska said at the time.
'The allegations against Mr. Slater challenge whether he betrayed those responsibilities.'
He had originally pleaded not guilty to all three charges of illegally disclosing national defense information and conspiracy.
But on Thursday, he had entered a plea deal with the federal Omaha judge, in which he pleaded guilty to just one count and the two others were dropped.
'Mr. Slater betrayed an oath he made to safeguard our nation's intelligence,' Special Agent in Charge Eugene Kowel of the FBI Omaha Field Office said.
'Leveraging his access to sensitive information, Mr. Slater chose to transmit material that put our country at risk.'
Slater remains a free man until his sentencing, which is scheduled for October 8. His conspiracy to transmit national defense information charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.
'Access to classified information comes with great responsibility,' US Attorney Lesley Woods for the District of Nebraska said.
'David Slater failed in his duty to protect this information by willingly sharing National Defense Information with an unknown online personality despite having years of military experience that should have caused him to be suspicious of that person's motives.'

17-year-old charged with murder in paddleboarder's killing at a pond in rural Maine
Authorities in Maine said Friday they have charged a 17-year-old with murder in the death of a paddleboarder who went missing on a rural pond. The body of Sunshine Stewart, 48, of Tenants Harbor, was found this month on Crawford Pond in Union, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of Portland. The killing shocked and scared the community, where trips to the pond and nearby campground are a summer staple. Maine State Police said a teenager was taken into custody without incident in Union on Wednesday night. Police did not say initially why he was arrested or if he was charged, and they declined to release any other information about him as the investigation is ongoing. The state attorney general's office said Friday that the teen was charged with one count of murder. The office did not identify the teen and did not immediately say when the person was due in court. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta determined Stewart's cause of death was strangulation and blunt force trauma, police said. A person reached by phone who identified herself as Stewart's sister declined to comment. Friends of Stewart have posted online testimonials remembering her as fiercely independent and always up for a challenge, including outdoor adventures and building projects. Over the years, she worked in many roles, including as a fisherman and bartender, friends said. She renovated her home in Tenants Harbor, a neighborhood in St. George, said Bruce Twyon, a friend who knew Stewart from her time living in the Virgin Islands. That spoke to her self-motivation and spirit of 'getting things done and enjoying life every day,' he said. 'She was such a sweet person and very strong and independent, and took care of a lot of people,' Twyon said. The pond, in the 2,400-resident town of Union, is about 600 acres (243 hectares) and does not have public access. It is available for a variety of uses, including boating and fishing. The 100 Acre Island preserve in the center of the pond is a wooded island reachable by canoe, kayak or paddleboard from a nearby campground. The pond has numerous nooks and narrow areas, so it's possible there were other boaters on the water at the time of the killing who were unaware someone was in danger. Police said in a statement the arrest was the 'result of relentless investigative work' and that the teen was taken to Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. Loved ones of Stewart — who was known as 'Sunny' by her friends — launched a GoFundMe page to help celebrate her life. The page said memorial service dates were being determined.

Parole officer shot and killed in his office in front of horrified colleagues
A California parole agent was fatally shot in the line of duty after an assailant stormed his office. Joshua Lemont Byrd, 40, died after the attacker stormed the Division of Adult Parole Operations office in Oakland at around 12:50 pm on Thursday. The suspect then fled from the building but was later detained by Oakland Police Department (OPD) officers. He was identified as Bryan Keith Hall, who was recently paroled from prison, according to Fox KTVU. Hall, 48, has a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon for stabbing a man in the neck on Lakeshore - a neighborhood in Oakland - in a case handled by the OPD and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Father-of-three Byrd was transported to Highland Hospital, where he tragically died. On Thursday evening, law enforcement officers from the OPD, Alameda County Sheriff's Office, CHP and state patrol lined up outside the hospital as Byrd's body - shielded by an American flag - was carried out and placed into an Alameda County coroner's vehicle. 'This is a heartbreaking loss. Agent Byrd served with integrity and courage — and we're forever grateful,' California Governor Gavin Newsom and Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis said in a statement on Thursday. 'We are keeping his family in our prayers and we join the men and women of CDCR in mourning this tragedy.' Byrd left behind a wife and three children. A GoFundMe has been set up to support his family members and other loved ones. 'Byrd was a great guy and officer. He was very dependable and cared for all. He was a Navy veteran before he joined CDCR and Parole.' Byrd's partner Hugh Soloman explained on the GoFundMe page. 'Byrd started at CMF and was with us for a good long while before he transferred over to Parole. 'The purpose of the donation is to help the family in the uncertain and tragic time. The honor box will show his family how much he was loved and honored.' Over 500 people have donated to the GoFundMe, raising over $50,000 in total, with a goal of $75,000. The motive of the shooting remains unclear and has not been released at this stage. The CHP said in a statement: 'We do not believe there is any ongoing danger to the public.' Byrd's death is the first line-of-duty loss for CDCR since 2018. Flags at the state Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff in Byrd's honor, according to Newsom's office. Byrd served with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for 11 years. Hall was paroled from prison a week and a half before the murder.
