Basketball Takes Over Birmingham
The Alabama A&M vs. Samford matchup kicks off a full week of games at Boutwell Auditorium:
Wednesday, Oct. 15 – Auburn vs. Oklahoma StateThursday, Oct. 16 – Alabama (Women's) vs. Florida State
Last year, Boutwell hosted its first men's basketball game in over 45 years. The event featured Alabama vs. Wake Forest and marked a historic return to hoops in the venue.
Alabama A&M University welcomed Donte Jackson as its new head men's basketball coach in 2025, signaling a new era for the program. Freshman wide receiver continues to impress the Texas A&M coaching staff this summer
Texas A&M's 2025 wide receiver rotation now features KC Concepcion (NC State) and Mario Craver (Mississippi State), while the return of Terry Bussey, Ashton Bethel-Roman, and Izaiah Williams should help starting quarterback Marcel Reed in the passing game due to the added speed, quickness, and ability to separate in coverage. On Wednesday, during the Aggies' first preseason practice, one of the program's underrated 2025 signees, wide receiver TK Norman, impressed during his first showing, displaying the quickness and fluid route running many of us expected from the Montgomery, Alabama native during his rise in the recruiting rankings after his senior season at Carver HS. During his senior season, Norman reeled in 31 receptions, 629 yards, and six touchdowns, and averaged over 20 yards per reception. According to most recruiting outlets, Norman was considered a three-star prospect outside of 247Sports, where he finished as a four-star recruit. Still, it's been confusing why he was ranked so low, but that doesn't matter now, as it's his time to shine during his first collegiate season. Earlier this summer, Mike Elko discussed Norman's growth, including adding a reported 20 pounds while working with S&C coach Tommy Moffitt, which has not hindered his speed or quickness. "Really excited about him. And then you just even go down to like some young kids. I was talking to TK Norman the other day. Like, TK Norman has put on 20 pounds and all kinds of muscle. That's 20-pound body weight since he got here. He showed up at 165. He's 185 right now." Norman will be working towards a spot in the 2025 rotation, as KC Concepcion, Mario Craver, Terry Bussey, and either Ashton Bethel-Roman or Izaiah Williams are expected to earn the first four spots, but if Norman continues to impress the staff during the preseason, don't be surprised if he sees the field as soon as the 2025 season opener vs. UTSA. FAMU football picked to miss HBCU postseason in 2025 SWAC Predicted Order of Finish
Florida A&M football is expected to have a similar season to the one it had last year. In the Southwestern Athletic Conference's predicted order of finish, the Rattlers were picked to finish second in the East division behind the defending league and Black College Football Champions, Jackson State. Last year, FAMU went 7-5 and tied for second in the SWAC East under first-year head coach James Colzie III. The Rattlers earned 99 total points with three first-place votes in the SWAC predictions. Led by Jackson State, with 126 points and 16 first-place votes, the SWAC East preseason rankings are FAMU, Alabama State (91 points, two first-place votes), Alabama A&M (62 points), Bethune-Cookman (45 points, one first-place vote), and Mississippi Valley State (24 points). Southern leads the SWAC West with 120 points and 17 first-place votes, followed by Alcorn State (90 points, two first-place votes), Prairie View A&M (72 points, one first-place vote), Texas Southern (60 points), Grambling State (55 points), and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (28 points, one first-place vote). FAMU finishing second in the SWAC East means it would not qualify for the HBCU football postseason, as the league places the East and West divisions' regular season winners versus each other for the championship game in December. The SWAC champion faces the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title holder in December's Celebration Bowl, the de facto Black College Football National Championship game. If they don't make the HBCU playoff, the Rattlers' challenging schedule this season could earn them an at-large bid to the Football Championship Subdivision tournament, which begins in late November.
