Trump's Russian arms import jibe fires blanks
Over the past decade, India's import bill from Russia for arms has steadily come down - with Russia accounting for 72 percent of imports in 2010-14 to just about 36 percent in 2020-2024. At the same time, domestic production of arms has gone up sharply, with a 174 percent jump since 2014 as several private sector entities have entered the market.

The cutting down of Russian weapons imports has also benefitted countries like the US, Israel and France as their exports to India have increased. The US in particular has managed several big ticket sales to India, including MQ9B drones, P8I maritime aircraft and the Apache and Chinook helicopters.

In fact, the last deal for a major new Russian weapon system was signed in 2019 for the production of AK 203 assault rifles in India. The $680 million contract is however dwarfed by orders to American entities like General Dynamics which got orders for drones worth $3.9 billion in October last year and General Electric (GE) that got engine orders worth $ 720 million in 2021.
India has also over the past decade walked away from several major co development projects with Russia, as it looked to diversify suppliers and get access to cutting edge technology. This includes the joint development of a fifth generation fighter aircraft and a new generation Medium Transport Aircraft. Yet another plan to co produce a light helicopter has also been put in cold storage.

On the other hand, joint development efforts with the US are on the rise under initiatives like the INDUS X and ICET that have identified several areas like maritime domain awareness, space and autonomous systems as priority areas.

India is the world's third-largest oil importer and since 2022, it has become the top buyer of Russian oil. India buys up to 2 million barrels of oil from Russia every day. That's about 2 per cent of the world's total oil supply. China and Turkey are also among the biggest buyers of Russian oil. Putin may hit back by shutting down the CPC pipeline According to experts at JP Morgan, India plays a very important role in Russia's oil export plans. If anything disrupts this path, Russia could strike back by shutting down the CPC pipeline that runs through Kazakhstan. This pipeline is important because major US oil companies like Chevron and Exxon have big stakes in it. So, Russia also has ways to put pressure on the West. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has warned that if Russia doesn't agree to a peace deal with Ukraine by August 7–9, he will impose up to 100 per cent tariffs on countries that continue buying Russian oil. On top of that, a 25 per cent tariff on all Indian goods entering the US has already come into effect starting this Friday. Rs. 5.9 lakh crore trade at risk According to a Reuters report, after Donald Trump's warning, Indian state-run oil companies have stopped buying Russian oil this week. If India gives in to US pressure and stops buying oil from Russia, the impact will not just be on Russia, it could shake the entire global oil market. Crude oil prices might rise above USD 80 per barrel worldwide. India and Russia have always shared a strong bond. In the financial year 2024–25, the trade between the two countries reached USD 68.7 billion i.e. nearly Rs. 5.9 lakh crore. That's about 5.8 times more than the trade before the COVID-19 pandemic. A big part of this trade is crude oil. Russia now supplies around 40 per cent of all the oil India needs. But the partnership between India and Russia is not just about oil. It also includes defence and nuclear energy. India buys many of its military weapons from Russia, and both countries are working together to build nuclear reactors. Now, Trump's pressure could weaken this strong partnership. If things go wrong, it may harm India's energy security and defence strength. India caught between two powerful partners India is facing a tough situation. On one side, it has deep and long-standing ties with Russia. On the other, it has important trade relations with the United States. Now, all of this has come down to a difficult choice involving USD 68 billion (around Rs. 5.9 lakh crore) in trade. Trump has even warned of tariffs as high as 500 per cent on countries that continue buying oil from Russia. This is like a sword hanging over India's head. Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami made it clear that the country cannot shut down its economy just to follow Western sanctions. He also pointed out that European countries are still trading with Russia, so it's unfair to expect India to stop completely.

1,703 Indians deported from US in 2025; 90% sent back from just 5 states
Since January 2025, daily deportations of Indians from the US have tripled under Trump's stricter immigration rules; most returnees are from Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, UP, and Goa New Delhi Since Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025, the number of Indian nationals deported from the US has gone up significantly. According to data from India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), 1,703 Indians have been sent back in just six and a half months — averaging around eight deportations a day, news agency PTI reported. This is almost three times the daily average seen during the Joe Biden administration, when about three Indians were deported daily between January 2020 and December 2024. US steps up warnings on visa violations and illegal entry In late June, the US State Department warned that visa holders must strictly follow all American laws and immigration rules. 'We will revoke their visas and deport them if they don't,' it said on June 26. Earlier that week, a separate message was issued targeting undocumented migrants. 'The US has increased enforcement of immigration laws and removal of illegal aliens,' it stated. 'Illegal entry will lead to detention, deportation, and permanent consequences for future visa eligibility.' Deportees returning in staggered batches Of the 1,703 Indians deported so far this year, 747 flew back from the US individually or in small groups via commercial flights. Another 72 came through Panama using a similar process. India does not keep its own official figures on how many of its citizens live illegally in the US. For deportations and consular matters, it relies on information provided by US authorities. The MEA said it is 'engaged with US counterparts to ensure deportations are carried out humanely.' It has raised concerns about the use of shackles, especially on women and children, and has also highlighted issues around cultural and religious sensitivities. Most deportees from five Indian states Data shows that over 90 per cent of deported Indians in 2025 so far came from just five states. Punjab topped the list with 620 deportees, followed by Haryana (604), Gujarat (245), Uttar Pradesh (38), and Goa (26). Other states and union territories reported fewer cases: Maharashtra and Delhi (20 each), Telangana (19), Tamil Nadu (17), Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand (12 each), and Karnataka (5).
