Trump puzzles Chelsea FC as he crashes Club World Cup trophy party

Euronews11 hours ago
Chelsea FC put in a spectacular performance to beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final of the new Club World Cup on Sunday, but the subsequent award ceremony was suddenly attended by an unexpected guest: US President Donald Trump.
Cole Palmer was visibly elated as he bounced behind Reece James, the Chelsea captain, who was receiving the Club World Cup trophy — when they were flanked unexpectedly by US President Donald Trump, who stood between Palmer and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.
"I knew he was going to be here, but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy, so I was a bit confused," Palmer told reporters.
James was equally confused by the US president's apparent desire to join in on the celebrations.
"They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay," James told domestic media.
"He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment."
Trump, wearing a bright red tie, appeared to leave the podium with a medal himself, presented by FIFA President Gianni Infantino shortly after Reece James was honoured.
Palmer lauded as 'scary good'
Palmer, 23, was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player after netting the opening two goals in Chelsea's triumph.
The English midfielder has been thrust into the spotlight recently. Over the weekend, he was photographed in front of a giant Nike billboard in Times Square, emblazoned with his image and the slogan: 'Scary good' — part of a campaign also featuring Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Vinícius Júnior.
'I've seen the billboards in Times Square and outside of Madison Square Garden,' Palmer said. 'It's a nice feeling to be obviously alongside them type of players.'
Palmer's first-half brace featured two nearly identical left-footed finishes from just inside the penalty area in the 22nd and 30th minutes. He also set up João Pedro for Chelsea's third goal in the 43rd minute with a precise through ball, which was deftly chipped over Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said his side seized control early. 'I think we won the game in the first 10 minutes,' he said. 'The message before the game was: let them understand that we are here to win.'
Palmer's first goal came after a long kick from Sánchez was misjudged by PSG's Nuno Mendes, whose header backwards allowed the ball to fall to Malo Gusto. Gusto's shot was blocked and rebounded to Palmer, ending PSG's run of 436 minutes without conceding.
'These are the games where we expect Cole to appear because they are big games, big moments,' Maresca added.
Palmer's second came after latching onto Levi Colwill's long pass, cutting inside and finishing clinically for his 18th goal of the season.
'It's a great feeling,' Palmer said. 'Even better because obviously everyone doubted us before the game. The gaffer put a great gameplan out, and obviously, he knew where the space was going to be.'

Elon Musk's xAI inks Pentagon deal for contentious Grok chatbot

Launched at the end of 2023, Grok has rarely been out of the headlines for its offensive gaffes, and will now offer its services as "Grok for Government." In addition to the Pentagon contract, "every federal government department, agency, or office (can now) purchase xAI products" thanks to its inclusion on an official supplier list, xAI added. After an update on July 7, the chatbot praised Adolf Hitler in some responses, denounced on X "anti-white hate", and described Jewish representation in Hollywood as "disproportionate." xAI apologized on Saturday for extremist and offensive messages, and said it had corrected the instructions that led to the incidents. The new version of the chatbot, Grok 4, presented on Wednesday, consulted Musk's positions on some questions it was asked before responding, an AFP correspondent saw. The contract between xAI and the Department of Defense comes even as Musk and President Donald Trump are locked in a bitter feud. The two men became close during Trump's latest run for the presidency and, following the inauguration, the Republican billionaire entrusted Musk with managing the new agency known as DOGE to slash the government by firing tens of thousands of civil servants. After ending his assignment in May, the South African-born entrepreneur publicly criticized Trump's major budget bill for increasing government debt. The president and the businessman engaged in heated exchanges on social media and in public statements before Musk apologized for some of his more combative messages. The government and the defense sector are considered a potential growth driver for AI giants. Markets shrug off Trump tariff threat against EU

Americas 11:25 From the show Major stock markets on Monday largely shrugged off US President Donald Trump's latest tariffs threat to hit the EU and Mexico with 30 percent levies. Analysts said investors viewed the warning as yet another negotiating ploy against America's trading partners rather than a genuine move -- although lingering uncertainty weighed on oil prices. AC Milan confirm Modric arrival

Last week, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner would head to the San Siro from Real Madrid after the Club World Cup. Modric, who turns 40 in September, joined Madrid from Tottenham in 2012 and had been linked with a move to Italy since early June, after announcing he would leave the Spanish giants at the end of his contract. "AC Milan are delighted to announce Luka Modric has signed a contract with the club until 30 June 2026 with an option for a one-year extension until 30 June 2027," the 19-time Serie A winners said. Modric was in Milan earlier on Monday to undergo medical tests but according to Italian media will only start training with his team-mates in August. "I'm very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career," Modric said in a video on the club's social media platforms. "A big hug to everyone," he added. Allegri is back at the helm at Milan having led them to the Serie A title in 2011 during his first spell in charge between 2010 and 2014. Their first game of the new season is in the Italian Cup on August 17.
