MJ Lenderman Lends Some Twang to This Is Lorelei's ‘Dancing in the Club'

Yahoo25-03-2025
After putting out two of the best albums — indie rock or otherwise — of 2024, MJ Lenderman and This Is Lorelei are linking up, with the former sharing a new version of the latter's 'Dancing in the Club.'
Lenderman's rendition of the tune is set to appear on the upcoming deluxe edition of Box for Buddy, Box for Star, the breakthrough LP for musician Nate Amos (who's also one half of the experimental duo Water From Your Eyes). Where This Is Lorelei's original is a glittering, up-tempo gem that gestures towards sprightly synth pop, Lenderman fittingly tackles the song with a bit more high and lonesome twang.

Amos helped Lenderman record this new version of 'Dancing in the Club' late last year. 'I really loved working on the MJ version of 'Dancing in the Club' — Jake is chill AF and mad talented,' Amos said in a statement. 'More so than any other song I've written this one was dreamt up for others to sing, so it was pretty freaky watching it fall into place with someone like Jake handling lead vocals.'
Lenderman, who's been performing 'Dancing in the Club' at some of his recent shows, added, 'Box For Buddy was by far the album I listened to most in 2024. I had a great time re-recording 'Dancing in the Club' with Nate back in December.'
Along with Lenderman's take on 'Dancing in the Club' the Box for Buddy deluxe edition will feature new versions of 'Two Legs' with Snail Mail's Lindsey Jordan and 'Angel's Eye' by Amos' father and sister, Bob and Sarah (a celebrated bluegrass duo in their own right). The deluxe edition is set to arrive April 25 via Double Double Whammy.
This Is Lorelei has a few more shows left on the current leg of their North American tour with Starcleaner Reunion. But they'll return to the road in late April, supporting Lenderman and his band the Wind, on a trek that runs through mid-May.

Trump Says Sean Combs Pardon Is ‘More Difficult to Do' Since Combs Was ‘Hostile' to Him

Donald Trump weighed in again on rumors of a possible presidential pardon for Sean Combs, the hip-hop mogul convicted last month on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, calling him 'half-innocent' but agreeing with a host who asked if it was 'more likely a no.' Combs was found not guilty on July 2 of more serious sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges. Yet each of the two prostitution counts could technically land him in prison for up to 10 years when the mogul is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 3. (Legal experts, however, tell Rolling Stone they expect him to get much less.) More from Rolling Stone Sean Combs' Allies Have Upped Pardon Talks. His Survivors Want to Shut Them Down Sean Combs Asks Judge to Ditch His Conviction or Retry Prostitution Counts Mary J. Blige Fighting Back After 'Meritless' Lawsuit From Sean Combs' Ex Misa Hylton 'Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent,' Trump told Newsmax host Rob Finnerty Friday night. '[He's] still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn't as good of a victory.' Trump and Combs have had an up-and-down relationship in the decades since they first met in the 1990s. Over the years, the real-estate magnate has been spotted at a number of Combs' VIP parties and events in New York City, including the Bad Boy founder's blowout birthday bashes. Trump called Combs 'a good friend' during a 2012 episode of The Apprentice, while Combs called Trump 'a friend of mine' in 2015, not long after Trump launched his first campaign. But when asked about Trump in 2017, Combs told the Daily Beast, 'I think that to be honest, we don't really give a fuck about Trump, because [black people are] in the same fucked-up position. So that's not what we're on.' Speaking to Charlamagne tha God in 2020, Combs said, 'White men like Trump need to be banished. That way of thinking is real dangerous. This man literally threatened the lives of us and our families about going to vote … The number one priority is to get Trump out of office.' When asked about a possible pardon in May, Trump said, 'I haven't seen him, I haven't spoken to him in years. He used to really like me a lot, but I think when I ran for politics that relationship busted up … I read some little bit nasty statements in the paper all of a sudden.' But he seemed at least somewhat sympathetic to Combs' plight, telling reporters that he 'would certainly look at the facts' of the case. 'I know people are thinking about it,' he added. 'People have been very close to asking.' During Friday's interview, Trump recalled that he was 'very friendly with him. I got along with him great, and [he] seemed like a nice guy. I didn't know him well. But when I ran for office, he was very hostile. It's hard, you know? We're human beings. And we don't like to have things cloud our judgment, right? But when you knew someone and you were fine, and then you run for office, and he made some terrible statements. So I don't know …. it makes it more difficult to do.' As Rolling Stone reported in May, the mogul's associates began contacting people close to Trump shortly after he won the presidential election last November. During the presidential transition and in the opening months of Trump's second administration, several longtime friends and allies of Combs, who've known the rapper for many years, began reaching out to some Trump transition and administration officials, as well as to others close to the president, two sources familiar with the matter and another person briefed on it told Rolling Stone. The small number of senior Trump officials who were aware of the talks expressed deep reservations about commuting a possible Combs sentence, given the severity of the charges. (A rep for Combs did not immediately reply to a request for comment on Friday's interview.) It's unclear if Combs' acquittal on the most severe charges has changed the calculus among the president or anyone in his administration. As Rolling Stone reported on Thursday, Combs' team has intensified their behind-the-scenes campaign in recent weeks, according to people in and out of the Trump administration. 'The pleading has gotten bigger [this month],' a Trump adviser says, referring to a conspicuous uptick in Combs allies' attempts to woo Team Trump. In the past few weeks, longtime Combs allies have offered to pay political operatives, lobbyists, and others with close ties to Trumpland and government officials large financial sums in exchange for help with a potential Trump pardon, three people familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone. One of the sources says the offer they were privy to was in the mid-six figures. Multiple Trump advisers still feel it would be a deeply unforced error to pardon Combs while the administration is still embroiled in a scandal over their handling of the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. There are also ongoing talks among survivors to send a personal letter to Trump urging him against the idea. Rolling Stone has reviewed a draft copy of the letter, which admonishes Combs for attempting to 'reclaim control' and 'rewrite history' following his conviction on prostitution charges. A pardon, the draft adds, 'would not be justice' but a 'devastating message to survivors everywhere: that our lives, our pain, and our truth are still negotiable.' On Thursday morning, lawyers for Combs submitted a 62-page filing asking a judge to vacate his prostitution conviction and fully acquit him or grant him a new trial 'focused solely' on those two counts. Earlier this week, they filed a new motion asking that Combs be released on bail. Southern District of New York prosecutors filed their own motion Thursday night arguing that Combs remain in jail until his sentencing. Randy Pitchford says Borderlands 4 is intended to "bring new people in" to the series, and I can only hope it's better at that than the Borderlands movie and its $110 million loss

Borderlands 4 is fast approaching, and Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford says "it's a perfect entry point" for anyone who's never played a game from the series before. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Pitchford says that the devs are aiming for Borderlands 4 to "take care of the people that have been with us but also bring new people in." By the time the new looter shooter releases, it'll have been almost six years to the day since Borderlands 3's launch, so it makes sense that Gearbox would want to cater for the players that never caught up with the series all those years ago. There's past evidence to support this idea, too. "We saw, for example, between Borderlands 2 and 3, that about a third of the people that played Borderlands 3 were new to the franchise," explains Pitchford. "So, we wanted to make sure that we made the game accessible to people that have never played a Borderlands game before, but also make it familiar." It's also worth keeping in mind the success – or rather, lack thereof – of last year's Borderlands movie adaptation. With a reported $115 million production budget and an extra $30 million on marketing and distribution (thanks, Variety), the worldwide box office revenue of around $33 million (via Box Office Mojo) meant it didn't even come close to breaking even, let alone making a profit. With an estimated loss of around $112 million, it's safe to say that the movie didn't exactly give the franchise a massive boost of new fans Gearbox might have been hoping for, so now it's on Borderlands 4 to do some heavy lifting. In the Rolling Stone interview, Pitchford reiterates that "if this is your first Borderlands, it's a perfect entry point," so it definitely sounds like Gearbox is keen to welcome new players with the latest entry. Given its release across PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and even Switch 2, Borderlands 4 definitely seems well positioned to do that, but for now only time will tell how successful it is. Gearbox's Randy Pitchford celebrates Borderlands 4 going gold by explaining what that means: "The moment we're done is about as monumental as anything we experience in our lives."

Borderlands 4 has the "biggest world" Gearbox has ever made, and it's as seamless as it can be thanks to the power of "technical bulls***" that allows for "less borders, more lands"

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It sounds like Borderlands 4 truly may end up being "better" than Borderlands 3, as Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford previously said – or at the least, a whole lot bigger. Speaking in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Pitchford explains how developers wanted to "free ourselves" of any constraints and make the world of Borderlands 4 as seamless as possible – and how modern technology allows for them to do just that and more in the looter shooter. "The key for us is really tapping into what the hardware technology enables in terms of moving data around," he describes. "We're able to move massive chunks at very high speed from these new storage pieces that we have on these consoles and on PCs into memory that is accessible by the CPU," continues Pitchford. "That's all technical bullshit, I'm trying to be as simple as possible describing it, but what it comes down to is seamlessness. So now, as artists, we don't have to engineer these spots where we have to make it narrow and get to a choke point." Now, devs can make the world in Borderlands 4 "wide and open and free." Global creative executive officer Andrew Reiner details how this new freedom adds to the "awesome story campaign" and its non-linear fashion: "There's a point in the game where you have the choice of going to three different story locations and picking at it the way you want, and you'll go to new regions that are just massive. This is the biggest world we've created." Pitchford chimes in with the devs' philosophy while producing the new Borderlands game: "Let's not limit the player." Instead, Gearbox hopes to do the opposite – and that's why their mantra, which Pitchford says creative director Graeme Timmins came up with, makes so much sense – to have "less borders, more lands." It's a clever play on the Borderlands title, so here's hoping it rings true come the fourth game's release on September 12. Thankfully, there's not long left to wait now until players get their hands on the new Borderlands installment – September is only a couple of months away, after all. Randy Pitchford says Borderlands 4 is intended to "bring new people in" to the series, and I can only hope it's better at that than the Borderlands movie and its $110 million loss
