India International Coffee Festival concludes
DM Purnesh, President of SCAI, highlighted the overwhelming response from coffee stakeholders, with over 100 stalls expected at the festival.
These stalls will feature coffee companies, roasters, growers, equipment vendors, and food stalls. Notably, the festival will also feature prestigious championships such as the Barista Championship, Latte Art Championship, Brewer's Cup Championship, Coffee in Good Spirits, and Filter Coffee Championship, with the finals taking place at the IICF.
SCAI has been given permission by the Coffee Board to organise the festival for the next 10 years. The association, which has over 60 members, has broadened its scope beyond coffee growers to include roasters, machinery importers, traders, curers, and cafe owners.
India is the world's seventh-largest coffee producer and the fifth-largest exporter, with over two-thirds of its 3.5 lakh tonnes of annual production being exported.
Domestic coffee consumption in India is estimated at 95,000 tonnes, as per Crisil estimates. Additionally, India had hosted the World Coffee Conference in September 2023.

Coffee Research Institute aims to focus on scientific research
Chikkamagaluru: At a time when one of India's prime institutions, the Central Coffee Research Institute (CCRI), Balehonnur, is preparing for its centenary celebration, it adopted the motto India's Coffee Surge from Seven Seeds to Seven Lakh Tons. The centenary ceremony will be celebrated in Nov. The centenary celebration logo and theme were unveiled on Friday. Speaking after unveiling the logo, the Coffee Board chairman MJ Dinesh said that in anticipation of India's 100th year of Independence in 2047, the Coffee Board's primary goal is to achieve a leap from seven seeds to 7 lakh tons by 2047. As part of the centenary celebrations in Nov, the Central Coffee Research Institute in Balehonnur will release a new disease-resistant coffee variety, he said. The institute aims to focus on scientific research, farmer participation, and market expansion. Farmers participating in this initiative can benefit significantly, he noted. There is also an aim to enhance coffee value addition, which involves increasing production and reducing maintenance costs, ultimately securing better prices in the domestic market. Coffee Board secretary M Kurma Rao highlighted that the Balehonnur Coffee Research Centre is a world-class research institution. Sixteen coffee varieties have been developed there, with Chandragiri being the most popular. Coffee Board member demands release of crop damage compensation to growers in Kodagu
Madikeri: Coffee Board member Talur A Kishore Kumar of Kodagu has demanded that the MLAs take appropriate action to release crop damage compensation money to the coffee growers and farmers of Kodagu. In a press release, he said it is ridiculous that recently Madikeri constituency MLA Manthar Gowda, along with a delegation of growers, met Coffee Board president MJ Dinesh and submitted a request regarding the hardships faced by the growers. He urged the MLAs to stop submitting requests but put pressure on the govt and rush to the aid of the farmers. On July 3, Dinesh, along with Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Shrinivass Poojary, Kaup MLA Suresh Shetty, Coffee Board members, and board CEO Kurmarao, went to Delhi and met Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal. They submitted a petition regarding the problems and challenges faced by coffee growers and requested him to come and provide assistance, and the minister responded well, he said. The Union govt has already released NDRF funds to the state govt. However, Kishore Kumar alleged that two MLAs from Kodagu are not coming to the aid of coffee growers. KG Bopaiah and MP Appachu Ranjan, who were MLAs during the previous BJP govt, released at least Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 57,000 to each of the affected growers in two years. He alleged that since the Congress govt came to power in the state, growers and farmers have not received any financial assistance, and compensation money has not been released. The two Kodagu MLAs have not just submitted petitions and kept quiet, but have put pressure on the state govt to take action to distribute the NDRF money released by the central govt to the farmers. Kishore Kumar has also demanded that the state govt release separate compensation money.

About 30,000 coffee saplings to be planted this month in DK
In continuation of his efforts to introduce crops alternative to arecanut in the district, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta on Saturday said, at least 30,000 coffee saplings would be planted in Sullia and Kadaba taluks by this month-end. Speaking at the launch of Bolpu, an initiative to support aspiring entrepreneurs here, the MP said he was consulting various stakeholders on introducing coffee in the district after arecanut plantations were destroyed by the yellow leaf disease in many parts. While a few people were already growing coffee, recent soil tests by agencies concerned have said coffee could be grown in the region. One has to look at different alternatives instead of following stereotyped practices, the MP said. He further questioned that while Andhra Pradesh could grow coffee at the Araku valley, why can Dakshina Kannada not grow coffee. Capt. Chowta also said he has held discussions with the Coffee Board and local cooperative societies in Sullia and Kadaba. A few farmers were undergoing training in established coffee-growing regions.
