Renfrewshire hospices have warned they face a staffing catastrophe unless the Scottish Government meets an earlier commitment around wages.

Accord and St Vincent's hospices have confirmed they face a retention crisis if ministers fail to fund staff wage increases in line with the NHS.

The government had, in its 2025 budget, committed £5 million for hospices and alignment of pay uplifts to NHS pay awards.

But the 4.25 per cent awarded to NHS staff means the hospices will need a collective £8.6m to offer their nurses, doctors and other health professionals the same pay.
The hospices say they fear they will lose their staff if they cannot afford to meet the salaries provided in the public sector.
For most of the lifeline services – who provide palliative care for people in inpatient units and at their homes – the wage bill accounts for 70 per cent of their overall costs.

For Accord alone, it is due to receive £175,000 of the pledged £5m but, crucially, needs an additional £150,000 to meet the required wage increases in the 2025/26 financial year.
Jacki Smart, CEO of Accord and chair of the Scottish Hospice Leadership Group – which represents hospices across the country – reiterated calls for a more sustainable funding model.
She said: 'The Scottish Government must urgently release both the monies earmarked and commit the funds needed to help hospices keep pace with the latest NHS pay award.

'Our staff are talented and dedicated professionals and it isn't right that they are priced out of working in hospices because of NHS pay awards decided by the Scottish Government.
'Hospices are the backbone of specialist palliative care in Scotland with around 2,000 staff caring for over 23,000 patients and family members each year. No hospice leader wants to face the choice between cutting staff or curtailing pay but that is the stark reality now.
'Without being able to keep pace with NHS pay, the practical impact is that the crisis in Scottish hospices continues, while patients and staff lose out.'

She added: 'The public are generous in their support but the Scottish Government needs to ensure hospices are on a level playing field with the NHS, to retain staff and continue to deliver high quality care and support.'
A spokesperson for the Scottish Government said: 'We recognise the pressures hospices are facing and we greatly value the essential palliative care services delivered by hard-working staff.
'That is why we have already committed this year to supporting hospices to provide pay parity with NHS levels.

'We will continue to engage closely with the Scottish Hospice Leadership Group to understand what more can be done to support palliative care services in Scotland.
'It remains the responsibility of integration joint boards (IJBs) to commission palliative care services, including independent hospices, to meet the needs of their local communities.
'As such, we expect Scottish hospices and IJBs to continue to engage on any matters that may impact on the delivery of local palliative care services.'
On average, two thirds of hospice income is raised through fundraising. The remaining statutory funding is from government that is primarily allocated and distributed through local health and social care partnerships.
For St Vincent's Hospice in Howwood, it means the team needs to raise £1.5m a year to keep it up and running, while it costs Paisley-based Accord £7,700 a day.

The 36-year-old mum yesterday said "her heart goes out" to pop legend Justin Timberlake, who confirmed this week he has been diagnosed with Lyme disease. ‌ Speaking from her home in Watford, Hertfordshire, Kirstie said her daughter Harriet has been tested for the disease - and this recently came back as positive. Kirstie added: "[Lyme disease] is a devastating diagnosis and our hearts really do go out to him. I'm sure Justin is realising now that it affects everything - it's your nervous system, your joints and chronic fatigue. The chronic fatigue especially is something you can't even fathom until you're in it." It comes after the NHS warned a mouth symptom could be a sign of a life-shortening disease. ‌ Kirstie enjoyed a career as a pageant queen but she can no longer work due to the crippling nature of the condition. Lyme disease is known to cause high temperature, fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, tiredness and loss of energy. Harriet, 13, struggles with "seizure-like" blackouts and extreme fatigue, having been diagnosed with Lyme disease around one year after her mother. However, Kirstie recognised symptoms as early as 2015, signs she now knows were those of the infection. It took her years to get a diagnosis, after first being told she had rheumatoid arthritis. "Justin's gone very viral within one of my Lyme disease support groups - I'm sure a lot of people within the group will be reaching out to him with words of support," Kirstie continued. "It's hellish, to be honest. Once you've got Lyme disease chronically, you have to live with it for the rest of your life - it doesn't go away. My daughter has it now - two months ago, further tests showed it's caused deficiencies in iron and folic acid." ‌ After the mum's hands became "disfigured" - leaving her with painful swollen joints and unable to pick things up - she pressed for another diagnosis and, upon researching Lyme disease, flew to Mexico for blood tests specifically for the infection. These came back positive so she was eventually diagnosed in February 2023. Online reports say "Lyme disease cannot be inherited". MedlinePlus, part of the National Library of Medicine, says "the risk of certain complications of the condition may be influenced by inherited genetic factors, but the inheritance pattern is unknown". But Harriet experiences blackouts, almost like seizures, and migraines frequently, including at school. Kirstie has offered advice to Justin Timberlake, after he announced his diagnosis. However, she also said: "It's devastating for him, and we're heartbroken. There's no positive spin - it's a terrible thing to live with."

It comes as child health reviews revealed large gaps in child development areas amongst the most deprived areas in Scotland. Dr Steffi Keir, policy and impact adviser at Save the Children, warned the Scottish Government 'need to go further' or risk holding back children entrenched in poverty. Child development statistics published earlier this year chart the process of an individual growing from infancy to adulthood, is marked by a series of health assessments offered to all children at 13 to 15 months, 27 to 30 months and four to five years. The Public Health Scotland data showed the biggest gap in development is at the 27 to 30 months check-up, where 16% more children from the poorest areas are flagged compared to their more affluent peers. The smallest gap is at the 13 to 15-month check up, where it lies at just 5%. Read more: However, that still marks a disparity in terms of socio-economic backgrounds. Dr Keir told The Herald: 'Every child has a right to a loving, nurturing childhood that fulfils their potential. 'It's heartbreaking that some of the very youngest members of our society are being overlooked and left behind. 'Although child poverty is falling in Scotland, poverty is rising among families with babies and the early childhood development figures have been stagnant and have shown persistent inequalities for a decade. 'A child's environment and experiences in their earliest years forms the foundation for the rest of their life. 'Without support in early childhood gaps that exist can further widen as children get older, with a significant impact on their future attainment, as well as their future employment, education, physical and mental health and social outcomes. 'We cannot allow this gap to persist for another decade.' While the charity has praised the [[Scottish Government]]'s policy successes – including the Baby Box, Best Start Grants, and the Scottish Child Payment, Dr Keir has urged First Minister John Swinney to 'go further'. The campaign also urged Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the UK Government to abolish the two-child benefit cap. In 2021, then former first minister Nicola Sturgeon made The Promise pledge – to ensure all children and young people grow up loved, safe and respected. Dr Keir added: 'We need additional meaningful action on child poverty to tackle these entrenched inequalities, alongside targeted interventions that provide early help for families with the youngest children. 'This includes increasing the Scottish Child Payment to at least £40 in the lifetime in improved health, educational and employable outcomes – and lead to a more equal and prosperous Scotland for all. 'We will all reap the rewards of working towards a Scotland where no childhood is limited by poverty.' The Scottish Government has committed to reducing developmental concern at 27 to 30 months by a quarter by 2030. Ministers have said they have a 'particular focus' on addressing the gap between the most and the least deprived. Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said: "We are absolutely committed to tackling child poverty and our policies are making a meaningful difference to families. The poorest 10% of households are estimated to be £2,600 a year better off in 2025-26 and this value is projected to grow to an average of £3,700 a year by 2029-30. "Our policies are having to work harder in the current economic context because of decisions taken by the UK Government, like keeping the two-child limit on Universal Credit. "That's why we are developing the systems required to effectively scrap the impact of the two-child cap. "The Scottish Fiscal Commission estimates that 43,000 children will benefit in 2026-27, and our modelling estimates that mitigating the two-child limit will result in 20,000 fewer children living in relative poverty. "Policies such as the Scottish Child Payment, which we estimate will keep 40,000 children out of relative poverty in 2025-26, and the Baby Box, which has already helped at least 349,000 children have the best start in life, will continue to be central to our efforts."

The children that are still with us face excruciating pain as their body eats itself – converts the body's tissue into energy – to stay alive. The situation has deteriorated to the point where the UN believes one in five children is malnourished – an average of 112 children a day, since the beginning of 2025, according to Unicef. READ MORE: Gaza detainees 'tortured and raped' by Israeli forces, United Nations hears They also found that 18% of the 5000 children admitted into hospital for malnutrition had Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), the most life-threatening form. For many now, the only solution is enteral nutrition, also known as tube feeding, using a pale brown viscous liquid packed with life-saving nutrients. This can be done through the nose (nasoenteral) or via an open wound in the stomach (gastrostomy). The former feels like an endless stream of phlegm dangling down the throat, while the latter feels like your gastric juice will pour out at any moment. I should know, for this was my experience of having them growing up; I was malnourished for 14 years due to several childhood health issues. Due to aid shortage, many children whose lives depend on this are going without; this can have a severe impact on their development. This is even more true for the first 1000 days – from pregnancy to two years old – which is fundamental for the growth and development of the brain. Without the right nutrients, the immune system becomes weakened, increasing susceptibility to an illness. I contracted septicaemia, a blood poisoning bacterium, from my gastronomy, which could have turned into sepsis if it wasn't for the clean, sterile hospital and NHS resources. This is not the case in Gaza – out of the 36 hospitals, only 17 are operational, but with partial functionality amid the bombardment by Israel. (Image: AP) Those that remain are overcrowded and unsterilised with no access to clean water or medical supplies; many of these children have severe open wounds! The mass starvation has left them even more exposed to life-threatening infections. If they survive the hunger and disease, they will probably suffer with physical and psychological conditions. Their growth will be stunted, affecting the development of the bones, muscles and brain; this increases their chances of developing serious mental health and/or learning disabilities. Even though I am far healthier than in my childhood thanks to the care of the NHS, I still suffer minor health problems, including sciatica and IBS. But my experience of malnourishment pales in comparison to that of the starving children in Gaza, who will live with debilitating deformities, likely needing 24-hour care. Some might never make it to adulthood. Their future will be of lifelong pain and suffering, and the longer this continues, the more devastating the situation will become.
