Government wants film studio to proceed 'at pace'
Plans for the Crown Works Studios project were given the green light last year with hopes of creating more than 8,000 jobs.
While preparatory works have begun on the former shipyard site in Pallion, next to the Northern Spire bridge, construction of the studios is yet to start.
Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Lisa Nandy said the government wanted to see the development progress "at pace".
Government funding of £25m towards the regeneration of the riverside plot through the North East devolution deal, was announced by the then Conservative Chancellor Jeremy Hunt last year and backed by Rachel Reeves when Labour came to power.
Production company Fulwell 73 and financiers Cain International plan to build 20 soundstages on the banks of the Wear.
Asked about what progress was being made, Ms Nandy said: "We are working very closely to make sure that moves at pace and that [with] the investment we have put in people start to see results very quickly.
"What we have to ensure is that we build that ecosystem of local skills around it to make it even more attractive for people to invest and build a much more resilient economy in the North East.
"I think people living here will know, as I do living in Wigan, that if you only have one industry and that industry goes then it can be catastrophic.
"But if you have the whole ecosystem of skills it survives for decades and decades to come."
Diggers are on site to get the land ready for construction, with preparations expected to continue until this summer.
Sunderland City Council said it was "remediating the site in preparation for future investment" and would soon be procuring a contractor, with building work expected to start "later in the year".

Developer seeks to build 49 new homes in village
A developer has sought permission from a council to build 49 new homes in a village. Stonebond Properties in Chelmsford has submitted plans to Thurrock Council for authorisation to build on land adjacent to The Paddocks, Hillcrest Road, Horndon on the Hill. The 3.8-acre greenbelt site is currently used for equestrian purposes and comprises paddocks, stable blocks. The application involves demolition and then the construction of the 49 homes, 50% of which would be affordable, the developer said. The affordable housing element will be split between 70% affordable rent and 30% intermediate housing, reports the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The site will have a new access road to cul-de-sacs, a footpath and "substantial green infrastructure and informal play space", the plan said. The exact mix and types of homes will be determined at a later stage, the developer said, but the scheme was expected to provide a "good range of sized units", from one-bedroom starter units to larger family homes. A new north-south pedestrian "green link" across the site will provide connections from Hillcrest Road to Orsett Road via Horndon Recreational Ground. When announcing its public consultation, Stonebond Properties said: "This is the first in what we hope will be a series of engagement and workshop sessions for our site, known as The Paddocks at Hillcrest Road, Horndon on the Hill. "We believe this site presents an exciting opportunity to create a high-quality residential development that respects both the character of the village and its surroundings. "We welcome the chance to collaborate with the residents of Horndon on the Hill to design a bespoke, welcoming development that is proportionate to the village, and that offers pedestrian links to local services and amenities." The company said the scheme will include onsite and offsite ecological enhancements to achieve at least 10% biodiversity net gain. Reeves to launch £500m fund to help vulnerable children
Chancellor Rachel Reeves will launch a new £500 million fund aimed at helping up to 200,000 vulnerable children. The Government says the Better Futures Fund will be the largest of its kind in the world. It will be used to help struggling and vulnerable children and their families with a variety of problems they face. This could include early support to tackle challenges such as school absence, mental health issues, addiction and falling into a life of crime. The fund will run for 10 years, and ministers plan to raise a further £500 million from councils, investors and philanthropists to top up the Government's cash. The Chancellor will launch the initiative on Monday, as she visits a school in Wigan. Ahead of the visit, Ms Reeves said: 'I got into politics to help children facing the toughest challenges. 'This fund will give hundreds of thousands of children, young people and their families a better chance. 'For too long, these children have been overlooked.' The fund will be overseen by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and more details about how it will work will be released in the near future, according to the Government. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: 'This groundbreaking Better Futures Fund represents a major step in partnering with the impact economy, which has long played an important role in strengthening communities and driving inclusive growth. 'As part of the plan for change, we're bringing together Government, local authorities, charities, social enterprises and philanthropists to create a powerful alliance that will transform the lives of vulnerable children and young people. 'We owe them the best start in life. 'Together we will break down barriers to opportunity, ensuring those who need support most aren't left behind and have the chance to reach their potential.' The launch is backed by groups including Save the Children UK, The King's Trust, and Oxford University's Blavatnik School of Government. Elsewhere, ministers will host the first civil society summit this week, which aims to hammer out a plan for how Government will better work alongside charities and other organisations outside of the world of Westminster to the benefit of the public. Sir Mel Stride, the Conservatives' shadow chancellor, said the Government's plans would 'build on the Life Chances Fund – a Conservative policy that supports families and vulnerable children'. He added: 'But Labour's jobs tax has pushed up unemployment and prices, trapping more children in workless, struggling homes. 'Labour are taxing work, choking growth, and driving families into hardship. 'Under Kemi Badenoch, the Conservatives back the makers – protecting public finances, supporting working parents, and making sure hard work pays. 'Britain deserves a government that rewards effort, not one that penalises success.'

Trump faces a revolt from his MAGA base over the Epstein files
TAMPA, Fla. — On the weekend President Donald Trump decided to pick his biggest political fight to date with the MAGA base he created in his own image, thousands of his adherents were gathered together. And all they wanted to talk about here at the Student Action Summit hosted by the conservative activist group Turning Point USA was the "Epstein files." 'I think that these people — and I don't know, for whatever reason, there could be reasons — but I don't think they're telling us the truth about Epstein,' podcaster Brandon Tatum told the assembled crowd at the Tampa Convention Center. 'I think that that that guy was involved in something nefarious that implicates a whole lot of people. And my guess is that the whole lot of people may have, may happen to be some of our allies and some people that we don't want to have a bad relationship with.' Trump pulled the rug out from his base Saturday evening when he released a lengthy social media post that completely dismissed the importance of the issue that has consumed the right for the past week — and longer. 'For years, it's Epstein, over and over again,' Trump posted on Truth Social, blaming the files on Democrats. 'Why are we giving publicity to Files written by Obama, Crooked Hillary, Comey, Brennan, and the Losers and Criminals of the Biden administration.' Trump's supporters have gone along with him through every scandal and policy shift. When he made a decision, his base backed him. But the Epstein issue is challenging this alliance like never before. This week, the Justice Department said it would not release any additional files related to the case of the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein died in 2019 while in custody, and a medical examiner ruled his death a suicide. He was facing sex trafficking and conspiracy charges. Attorney General Pam Bondi released a two-page memo saying that the department's review turned up no 'client list' of powerful men who allegedly participated in Epstein's schemes, and there was no 'credible evidence found that Epstein blackmailed prominent individuals.' The memo enraged Trump supporters, who quickly turned on Bondi, a sentiment clearly felt at the Student Action Summit. For years, some top figures in the Trump administration had pushed unfounded theories about the Epstein files, and Bondi herself told Fox News in February that the Epstein client was "sitting on my desk right now." Trump also repeatedly said he would release the Epstein files. And in February, Bondi kept the issue alive by bringing right-wing influencers to the White House and giving them Epstein documents. But even that release wasn't enough, as the influencers — and even Bondi herself — insisted that the FBI had more documents that it wasn't sharing. There was no escaping the topic of the Epstein files this weekend in Tampa, with many attendees and speakers calling for Bondi to be fired — even as Trump sent the clear message that he wants his supporters to move on. 'It's not even about Pam Bondi to me. It's like, look, Trump, we elected you because you were supposed to be different,' said Sharon Allen, a 24-year-old attendee. 'So you have to prove to us you're different….you can fire her [Bondi], do whatever, but at the end of the day, Trump, you are president. We trusted you to get rid of these people and expose these people.' Former Florida state Rep. Anthony Sabatini, who was among Trump's biggest supporters when in the state Legislature and was in attendance at the event, called Trump's Truth Social post "out of touch." "Trump is losing his touch," Sabatini said. "Bad personnel are undermining him left and right. We need a full reset." Trump's message on Truth Social also defended Bondi. Summit attendees almost universally sided with FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, both of whom, NBC News and other outlets reported, were frustrated with Bondi's handling of the Epstein documents. Bongino and Patel used their considerable conservative media platforms prior to joining the Trump administration to amplify the idea that the Epstein case was part of a government-orchestrated cover-up to protect powerful political players. "What's going on with my 'boys' and, in some cases, 'gals?'" Trump wrote Saturday evening. "They are all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a FANTASTIC JOB!" But it's not clear that Trump's post will be enough to quell the furor. On the main stage Friday night at the Student Action Summit Megyn Kelly, a high-profile conservative commentator and Trump supporter, asked crowd a simple question: Bondi or Bongino? 'Bongino!' the crowd screamed in unison Friday night. 'It's 7,000 to 0,' responded Charlie Kirk, prominent conservative activist and head of Turning Points USA, who was the master of ceremonies for the weekend. Trump's post came after a day of attempts by the White House to tamp down simmering rage from the base. Patel posted Saturday on X that rumors of him considering resignation were 'conspiracy theories.' The White House also issued a statement Friday saying all the players involved continue to have Trump's support. 'President Trump has assembled a highly qualified and experienced law and order team dedicated to protecting Americans, holding criminals accountable, and delivering justice to victims,' White House spokesman Harrison Fields said. 'This work is being carried out seamlessly and with unity. Any attempt to sow division within this team is baseless and distracts from the real progress being made in restoring public safety and pursuing justice for all.' These attempts did little to lower the temperature in Tampa. 'Epstein is a key that picks the lock on so many things, not just individuals, but also institutions, intelligence institutions, foreign governments, and who's work and who was working with him on our intelligence apparatus and in our government,' Steve Bannon, a vocal Trump supporter told a crowd at the summit. Bannon said he is advocating for the Trump administration to appoint a special counsel to handle the matter. "I support Pam as AG but think a Special Counsel has to be named to take the Epstein case over; however audience sentiment during our live shows at the conference are running 100% against Bondi remaining as AG — never seen anything like it," he told NBC News in a statement. Other prominent MAGA World influencers also continued to hammer the issue Saturday afternoon, even as the White House was trying to project unity. 'I will not rest until we go full Jan. 6 committee on the Epstein Files. Every single client involved should have an FBI agent at their door going after them the same way they went after the Jan. 6ers,' Jack Psobiec, a vocal Trump online supporter, told the conference Saturday afternoon.
